Gameplay video thing

E3 demo has no music, and the boss battle looks about as fun as cancer. But aside from that! :] Hey this thread's a mess!

Paco Jul 9, 2007 09:39 PM

That game looks pretty standard graphics-wise but man... It's fucking NiGHTS~

It's also amazing how dull it feels without music. I'm still stoked about this and really wanna get a Wii because of games like this. I still miss the original BADLY and I've been jonesin' for a sequel for well over 10 years so I definitely want to play this game if ever there's a demo available; WITH MUSIC, THIS TIME.

Kaelin Jul 10, 2007 04:58 PM

Is it just me or do the links both bring up nothing? I went and searched youtube and found two other links, so I'm not sure if these are the same as what is (was?) on Gamespot's page:

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gn5YqQmlN_c

Gameplay: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUo77yRobH0

Looks fairly good so far :)

I guess this would be more exciting if I had some idea of what it is you DO in Nights. I hear an awful lot about how good the original game was, but I'm pretty well mystified about what the game was actually about. I guess you fly around and pass through rings or something?

My cousin had the original on Saturn and I remember playing it once and not getting it. I must say that the narrator in the video Kaelin put the link could start quite the cult. His voice is hypnotizing, its nuts! The levels do look very open and the game looks light hearted and fun, could be a rather relaxing game to play

Ouch.

Slayer X Dec 5, 2007 10:41 AM

Probably mostly due to the game being short and there seems like there's a lot of recycled material from the original, cept higher res. Like that fat boss that rolls areound, he was in the original.

Or at least I'm hoping that's all it was cause that's what I'm prepaired and expecting to happen. Hopefully there's no performance issues or something.

Django! Dec 5, 2007 02:23 PM

Pretty excited. New title keeps the aesthetics and charm of NiGHTS into Dreams. Some good music in them there videos, too. Only problem is that it looks a little slow, but that could be blamed on how far zoomed out the camera is compared to the first game.

Ouch.

Honestly, I'm not that surprised. When the original came out, only Saturn/Sega magazines praised it, multiformat mags pretty much trashed the game with "pretty but very basic and repetitive".

Conan-the-3rd Dec 5, 2007 05:53 PM

Also Famisu doens't strike me as the be-all end all, I meen sure, FF 12 is good, but perfect 40 good?

No one got it.

Will probably be a redux of 1996 all over again.

Torte Dec 6, 2007 02:23 AM

Aren't the best game simple and repetitive, though? I'd hit up Pac-Man over FF-whatever anyday.

Elixir Dec 11, 2007 01:39 AM

"The Japanese version of NiGHTS for Wii has 6 languages to choose from, Japanese, English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian."

Time to find out if this is true.

Lukage Dec 19, 2007 06:45 PM

Got it and played for a half hour. The Famitsu rating seems on-par thus far. I'd recommend renting this one first.

Considering I like RPGs and I played FF12 a good 20 minutes before deciding it was garbage... (well the story and battle engine couldn't grab my attention) and considering I'm playing this more than I've ever played FFXII... I have to disagree with Famitsu's ratings :P

Yes, but they almost always have some never-before-seen twist. Pong was simple too but it rocked cause there was nothing like it. Nights didnt bring anything new other then the "dreamlike" scenario, which quite honestly looked like a big pile of pixelated turd.

What other games were available where you fly around through hoops/collecting orbs as a purple transvestite in 1996?

Slayer X Dec 22, 2007 02:23 PM

I bought this game last week, really wish I hadn't though. Everything other then the graphics of this game are totally dated.

The fact that this game doesn't have checkpoints between stages is lame. And that it doesn't have checkpoints between the beginning of a stage and the Boss battle is what made me take it back to the store. I really wanted to like this game and I did when I started playing. But as soon as you have to actually play the game it all goes downhill from there.

I'm going to stick with my Saturn version and use my credit from this to get Zack and Wiki which is a killer title and the most underrated game of the year (consumer wise).

Or had amazing analog controls?

evilboris Dec 22, 2007 09:11 PM

Mario 64 had you flying, running, swimming, and doing god knows what else with a gay italian plumber with a squeaky noise (yes, mario is gay, faggot saved the princess 7918 times already and still didnt do as much as coping a feel, bitch probably allows being kidnapped in hope for some action), using full analog controls that actually mattered from the gameplay perspective.

Honest to god, I didn't notice any difference between the analog and dpad controls in Nights. Maybe its just me but the game behaved the exact same way in both modes. I love the Saturn, its my favorite console by far, but Nights is just plain overrated IMO.

surasshu Dec 22, 2007 09:22 PM

I'm pretty sure NiGHTS was released before Mario 64. But Mario 64 is rubbish and has the additional drawback of being on the N64, so it's not really like this matters much.

I don't really have any "proof" of this, but my theory is that most people haven't actually played NiGHTS and just say they think it's a great game cause that's what you're supposed to say. I'm like 99% sure that all those reviewers that are like "is it as good as the original????" never played the game when it came out.

Anyway, I do like NiGHTS, I don't think it's overrated per se. It has one of the most amazing interactive sound systems ever conceived, great soundtrack in general, and I really enjoyed playing it, I put like 80+ hours into it so I should. At the time, I thought it looked incredible (it hasn't aged well though I must say, like most 3D games). But I still stand by my theory that a lot of people who praise the living shit out of this game never played it. I just don't see how all those people even owned a Saturn.

Back on topic, I'm saddened that NiGHTS Journey of Dreams seems like it didn't turn out that good. I didn't have huge hopes or anything, but I was hoping it would be fun and if it's not, that's really disappointing. Still, I'll give it a try when I see it in the shops in EU. I didn't have high hopes for the new Sega Rally, and that's turned out to be my Game of the Year. You just never know until you try it for yourself...

Slayer X Dec 22, 2007 11:42 PM

Like I said. NiGHTS biggest problem was the horrible checkpoint system. Mostly because there ISN'T ONE.

The other major issue next to that is that about 50% of the game is PLATFORMING with NON NiGHTS characters. WTF???

What a disapointment.

I'll have to disagree with you there and say that REZ has that title. Or at least in my book.

evilboris Dec 23, 2007 11:44 AM

For the record, I did play Nights, in fact beaten the whole game on my original disc, multiple times, also played Xmas Nights to death (strangely enough I find Xmas Nights much better then the regular game... theres actually a point to it, unlocking the presents which add lotta more gameplay. Regular Nights is just fly around for a bunch of levels, then beat the grandmaster foshizzle wizeman and.... thats it.).

Mario 64 was... well, kind of revolutionized 3d platforming as a whole. I personally didn't like it but its the exact opposite of rubbish. I think you are confusing it with every other 3d Mario game made afterwards.

And Columns has better interactive sound. It actually changes as you play (and it has awesome tunes too). In Nights, I couldnt ever make the music change because of my actions, if it changed, it only did after I reloaded the level. Once I spent the whole run killing off those little egghead flying turds and it had no effect on the gameplay at all.

Well yeah that one would probably be my #1, as well. But Rez sorta cheats by making the game "slave" to the music (although the result is amazing, so I'm not complaining).

As far as the system goes in NiGHTS, it's clever and well-executed and results in a vast amount of variative music that doesn't turn into a mess. Good stuff.

This alone proves my point that Mario 64 was a horrible game. :D Seriously though, I had absolutely zero fun playing the game. Just cause it was loved by many and hugely influential doesn't mean I can't think Mario 64 is one of the worst games I ever played.

I've since avoided any 3D Mario game, so I haven't played Sunshine or Galaxy (are there other 3D Marios?). I guess they could be worse.

Anyway I found out NiGHTS Journey of Dreams isn't even out here yet, it's coming in 2008, just like Zack & Wiki. It really pisses me off that we have to pay double price for the same Goddamn games and that they come out months later. Unbelievable.
