One vote more for Crash Landon :savepoint:

Elorin Mar 20, 2007 06:19 PM

SotW extensions are always welcomed by me if there's a lot to cover due to downtime, extra events etc. Reason being that if there's too much to handle in one week, I'd simply not be able to cope and cease to vote in SotW. But I do try my best to participate in SotW because it's something I still enjoy doing very much.

Personally, I do not mind if my nominations have to be pushed back a week or more. I do find it harder to find new songs these days hence my muted enthusiasm.

Anyway, enough rambling and some actual voting. :P

This week is kind of interesting for me (can't quite determine why yet). But at least I do know these songs stood out for me:

(3 points) Nano Breaker (Game Rip) - Downtown

(2 points) Darwinia Soundtrack - Visitors from dreams

(1 point) The King of Fighters '96 Arrange Sound Trax - Seoul Road

Klonoa was pretty close to getting a point but I wanted to give more credit to Darwinia and Nano Breaker.

Rimo Mar 20, 2007 07:33 PM

I found all tracks to be interesting and here is my selection for points:

(3 points) Metal Saga ~Chain of Sandstorm~ Original Soundtrack - Route 99
(2 points) Darwinia Soundtrack - Visitors from dreams
(1 point) Nano Breaker (Game Rip) - Downtown

No elaborated comments, due to a lack of time tonight. I might add more later.

Week 90 can easily be extended until Wednesday or Thursday to account for the downtime. Anything beyond that seems a bit unfair, since most other weeks only get seven days for voting. Why should these songs get 10 or more?
Meanwhile, Week 91 can easily begin on its own. It'll give those of us who vote earlier than the weekends something to do. And the weekend laggers would still be able to do their thing this coming Saturday and Sunday.

This would be nice, considering that I've waited now about 3 weeks for my nom to be up, but w/e. All things at their time.

_DH_ Mar 20, 2007 10:05 PM

'Sup guys. I'm back from my vacation. Nice surprise to see my last nom won battle #11. Anyway, this week was excellent.

(3 points) Seoul Road
(2 points) Sound Locomotive
(1 point) Route 99

The Korean team arrangements from the various KOF arrange albums have always appealed to me though I prefer the one from the 2000 arrange album. I'm a sucker for Furukawa's old jazz/fusion style so I had to place Sound Locomotive second. It's a pity I couldn't give Route 99 more points since it is one of the more pleasant new tracks I've heard on sotw.

I'll announce my next nomination soon hopefully.

kuttlas Mar 21, 2007 06:20 AM

2 Points: Metal Saga Original Soundtrack - Route 99
2 Points: Sound Locomotive - Sound Locomotive
1 Point: Klonoa of the Wind 2 ~blahblahblah~ Original Soundtrack - Going to Lunatea - The Sea of Tears (After Polly's Entry)
1 Point: Nano Breaker - Downtown

opinions:
Area 88 - Front Line Base - Too short.

Darwinia - Visitors from dreams - Hey, I think I heard this tune on a keygen for Alcohol 120%!

Klonoa 2 - Klonoa 2 is one of my favorite soundtracks (I actually spent money on it) but in my experience its disneyish sound drives alot of people off. This is one of the better tracks on the album but it's got some fierce competition this week.

Metal Saga - Route 99 - It takes too long for this track to get down to business, and the chord progression in the intro really rubs me the wrong way. However once it gets going its amazing.

Nano Breaker - Downtown - There are better tracks on the Nano Breaker soundtrack but this is probably the most accessible, being the level 1 music after all. I'd love to give more support to my own nom but it's got no chance this week.

By the way, the sound quality is bad because I tried recording in on some different hardware that turned out to be junk. Thew final version will sound much better than this.

Guilty Gear X III Nocturne - Common Battle - It's not bad, but could the composer possibly have chosen weaker drum samples? There's so much adrenaline in this song I might bake cookies with my grandma, take my dog for a walk or clean my room, watch out I'm freaking out of control.

Sound Locomotive - Man this a tough week, too many good tracks. This sounds like the theme song to a 90s cartoon, in a good way, I love it.

KOF96 Arrange Sound Trax - Seoul Road - This is probably this week's least interesting track. If it weren't so slow I'd say this has got a severe case of sexy action news syndrome, but without the novelty it's pretty mediocre.

Game: Knytt (Game Rip)
Tracl: Tutorial Music
Track #: n/a
Year: 2006
Source: here (song is incorrectly labeled "Introduction"). Also here for confirmation of tutorial music.
Additional Info: I can loop the song if need be.

cdnalsi is awesome

I've much to thank you for Darkcomet. While I was doing song research for Knytt over the weekend, I was so intrigued by the game that I downloaded, completed it, love it so much, and downloaded the soundtrack subsequently. I'll likely give Within a Deep Forest, an earlier Nifflas game, a shot. The music from that game is rather good, too.

There's an mp3 version of the tutorial music in the 31Mb Knytt soundtrack file that actually loops. So I took the liberty to upload that to the SotW ftp. Could you check if that version is okay with you? It's labelled as "Tutorial Song" in the file name so it isn't too far off from the "Tutorial Music" title you (or rather cdnalsi) gave. You can access the file at this YSI link:

Yes, I must agree, cdnalsi is great. And so is Nifflas. I particularly like his short but fantastic "Indefinite Depths" and "Waterfall".

kuttlas: You should give full reviews of the tracks more often. Your reactions to things you dislike are quite amusing. I demand more cynicisms!

Glad someone was interested enough to check out the soundtrack. Weirded out that the previous sentence was used well before the song even made it's round. But :p

I actually believe that Within a Deep Forest has a superior soundtrack to Knytt, actually. The credits actually list cdnalsi, but I don't see any of his songs on the site (incidentally, the intro and ending movie tunes aren't on the site as well, coincidence?)

However, I'm sure that Tutorial Music is my nom choice. I doubt it'll get any points, but I don't think that background music should suffer simply for being background music.

Yeah, I recently found that version as well, and now that I think about it, it would be preferrable. I was planning on looping it myself and adding fadeout, but I think the abrupt ending is more satisfactory (for those who want to loop forever)

Darkcomet72 Mar 23, 2007 09:13 AM

Awesome week.

3 points: Downtown
1 points: Going to Lunatea
1 point: Sound Locomotive
1 point: Front Line Base

I had no say in the nominating of Going to Lunatea. A buddy of mine is really awesome so I gave him a slot, though it was pretty difficult to work around the mainstream barrier. So in reality, this isn't my nomination. That said, I actually like Going to Lunatea a whole lot.

Sound Locomotive is more of the good jazz fusion, not that weak stuff that I see too often here. It had more than enough hooks to earn a point.

DOWNTOWN! Nanobreaker is one of those games I always wanted to play even though it apparently sucks, and if the music is as amazing as this, I think I might end up buying it.

Front Line Base hit me in a very warm spot. It's like MMX music but better.

The rest of the songs are very fun, even Seoul Road, which is usually stuff I dislike.

Drakken Mar 24, 2007 11:49 AM

I struggled with 3-2-1 vs. 2-2-1-1. There were three songs that I liked better than the rest, though, and I suppose there's a bit of separation between 1 & 2 and 2 & 3, so I'm going with 3-2-1.

1. Visitors from dreams (3 pts.)
2. Route 99 (2 pts.)
3. Downtown (1 pt.)

EDIT: Short comments on some of the songs now, maybe longer comments once I'm home from work.

Downtown - I never thought 'dark' when I was listening to this one. It actually reminded me of Final Fantasy VIII; some of the melodies were similar or something. I can definitely picture it being effective background music in a game.

Route 99 - This one's really good. As orion said, it's nice to hear some steel guitar. I'll definitely have to check out the rest of the OST.

Front Line Base - A decent melody, but way too simple/short to do well here.

Going to Lunatea - I suppose it's pleasant, but it doesn't strike me as anything special. Certainly not memorable.

Sound Locomotive - Now, I realize this is a solid song, but I'm sorry, I'm just totally turned off to this style/sound now. I seem to have heard a bunch of these kind of songs from listening to SotW stuff over the years, and it just sounds really generic to me now. Particularly the synth used, ugh, it automatically turns me off. Can anyone else sympathesize with this?

As usual I'm one of the lastest ones, but I have a good excuse, I meditate deeply for very long, my point distribution I mean.

This is the result:

(2 points) Darwinia Soundtrack - Visitors from dreams: This short of chiptune imitation is the most solid offering of the bunch, what for a extremely solid week like this one is to say much.
(2 points) Sound Locomotive - Sound Locomotive: Highly enjoyable jazz fusion piece, I think I will never tired of listen to it.
(1 point) Klonoa of the Wind 2 ~Something Forgotten Wished by the World~ Original Soundtrack - Going to Lunatea - The Sea of Tears (After Polly's Entry): Pleasant and diverse listening experience. Colourful instrumentation and rich harmonic structure, not so good melodic lines.
(1 point) Nano Breaker (Game Rip) - Downtown: This one has an efficient dramatic presentation, a paused and intricate progression, virtues that catapults it into the top of this solid week.

Worthy of a mention "Metal Saga Original Soundtrack - Route 99": Quite good if we forget the AWFUL rising synthy melody totally out of context and place; the biggest turn-off of the week.

Shanks Mar 25, 2007 02:43 PM

(2 points) Darwinia Soundtrack - Visitors from dreams
(2 points) Metal Saga Original Soundtrack - Route 99
(2 points) The King of Fighters '96 Arrange Sound Trax - Seoul Road

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Mar 25, 2007 03:42 PM

I changed my point allocation slightly. Just noting this here so the proper adjustments can be made.

Kaleb.G Mar 25, 2007 09:05 PM

I liked a lot of the tracks this week, and I'm finding it hard to make a point allocation, but I'll go ahead and award one point to each of the following:

Capcom Music Generation Area 88 Original Soundtrack - Front Line Base
Klonoa of the Wind 2 ~Something Forgotten Wished by the World~ Original Soundtrack - Going to Lunatea
Metal Saga ~Chain of Sandstorm~ Original Soundtrack - Route 99
Nano Breaker (Game Rip) - Downtown
Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne Original Soundtrack - Common Battle ~Stuck in Amarah~
Sound Locomotive - Sound Locomotive

THE POWER OF WATER Mar 25, 2007 09:11 PM

Voting is closed and nominations are restricted!

1). [33] Metal Saga ~Chain of Sandstorm~ Original Soundtrack - Route 99
2). [24] The King of Fighters '96 Arrange Sound Trax - Seoul Road
3). [22] Darwinia Soundtrack - Visitors from dreams
4). [18] Sound Locomotive - Sound Locomotive
5). [14/11] Nano Breaker (Game Rip) - Downtown
6). [14/10] Klonoa of the Wind 2 ~Something Forgotten Wished by the World~ Original Soundtrack - Going to Lunatea - The Sea of Tears (After Polly's Entry)
7). [11] Capcom Music Generation Area 88 Original Soundtrack - Front Line Base
8). [8] Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne Original Soundtrack - Common Battle ~Stuck in Amarah~

I can't remember the last time I didn't give any points to any of the placing tracks. Y'all suck.

Golfdish from Hell Mar 25, 2007 09:44 PM

Sweet...The BEAST!! takes second place. Considering the massive lead Route 99 jumped out to, that wasn't too bad at all.

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Mar 25, 2007 10:11 PM

Personally, I think Sound Locomotive got gypped. I'd have liked to see it trade places with the KoF '96 track, honestly. Now I wish I'd saved Sound Locomotive to my hard drive. I wonder if it's still available on the site.

TCK Mar 25, 2007 10:34 PM

Chalk up another 3rd place!

Manny Biggz Mar 27, 2007 03:20 PM

It's funny, my second time placing second place while using the same album...
