You know, I've never paid attention to which thumb I use.
This is more text to test how much I use either hand.
And this is a line of text using only my left thumb. It is made of awkwardness and deleted double spaces(since my right hand automatically presses the spacebar after each word).

Conclusion:
Right hand almost exclusively.

Also, I was completely self-taught in typing. I've never taken a class in my life, and I can out-type pretty much all of my friends(but that is to be expected with a computer nerd such as myself).

I press the spacebar with my right hand most of the time, barring unusual circumstances like a papercut on my thumb or playing a computer game.

My typing was taught through a computer class in Jr. High. There wasn't really much to do in that class other than play a typing game with a mascot that looked like an amorphous blob. Its name was Qwerty. :/

The Wise Vivi Feb 12, 2007 10:00 PM

Well, the most part, I use my right thumb, especially when typing really fast. But on the occasion, I used my left thumb. When on GFF, I ALWAYS use my right thumb. ;)

Vestin Feb 12, 2007 10:04 PM

That's the way to go.

I just realized that I don't use my thumbs at all. I use my index finger. Weird.

And I made this fuckin' thread.

Oh well.

Yggdrasil Feb 12, 2007 10:35 PM

Left thumb, just a habit from playing computer games so my left hand is always on the keyboard.

Schadenfreude Feb 12, 2007 10:57 PM

I don't think I've ever used my right thumb to press the spacebar, only my left. It might have something to do with the fact that I'm left handed, I guess. I've never used any other fingers either, just my left thumb. My right thumb occasionally ends up resting on the spacebar, but I never actually use it.

I'm pretty sure I'm self-taught when it comes to typing. I certainly don't recall anyone teaching me ANYTHING in regards to typing. Perhaps I picked it up from watching my dad when I was a kid. Perhaps.

Muzza Feb 13, 2007 01:01 AM

Despite using my right hand for everything (...), I use my left thumb on the spacebar. I just tried to use my right thumb but it feels all awkward and strange. =/

Plarom Feb 13, 2007 01:08 AM

Umm.. Without even looking at the keyboard (which I'm still doing right now) I notice I don't use EITHER* thumb. Interesting.. I seriously hadn't used my thumb up until the *, at which point I used my left thumb after the bold tag. All the other times I use my right index finger. Perhaps my left-handedness has something to do with it! :D

SenorKaffee Feb 13, 2007 06:32 AM

Right thumb for longer texts, left thumb when my right hand stays on the mouse.

Sandy Feb 13, 2007 07:37 AM

This is a very interesting question as I never really noticed which thumb I use lol. O_O Apparently I use my left thumb :P

Self-taught here as well, I blame the internet.

*AkirA* Feb 13, 2007 08:16 AM

I use my left thumb.

I had to type that out to remember which one I used.

Shiny McShine Feb 13, 2007 08:21 AM

I use both, mostly my right though.

I taught myself how to type. I also don't use conventional methods...I guess what I do could be considered "chicken-pecking" or whatever. I can run a solid 65WPM easy though...

Such a Lust for Revenge! Feb 13, 2007 10:16 AM

I've noticed I hit the spacebar with my right thumb when I'm writing more aggressively. Lefty is more of a casualty.

I was trained for it in Junior High back in 1993. Since then I've developed my own style and it works pretty well. Kinda a hybrid between proper typing (my left hard) and precise pecking with the other. I was the second fastest typer in a prison or around 1500. =O Then again, that's probably not saying much.

munchkin13 Feb 13, 2007 10:33 AM

I use both depends what mood I'm in =P I also use my index finger in times when I've got to rush to type something.

I'm self taught, I don't know how many words i can type per minute I've never really tried. Probably around the average maybe a bit less or bit more. Should really try to find out lol

Menzoberranzan Feb 13, 2007 11:33 AM

Thats a funny question actually. I have never really noticed which thumb I use to press the space bar. I think maybe 25% the left and 75% the right. Typing this entire paragraph sort of showed the right being more dominant.

But then again I think it depends on the ending letter of the word before the space. If the ending word before the space was typed by my left hand my left thumb takes priority. If its a right hand side of the keyboard word, most likely the right thumb. Or if the right hand typed a letter that was too far away from the space bar.

Weird

This is gonna make me spend unnecessary brain power and time watching my thumbs whenever I type LOL

Gumby Feb 13, 2007 12:07 PM

Mostly right thumb but I do also use my left thumb for that.

They made us take typing classes in elementary school and middle school. I never got much above 60wpm in those classes. It wasn't until I started chatting online did I learn to type fast.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Feb 13, 2007 12:07 PM

I don't actually type correctly (I just use my index and middle fingers mainly), so I use my index finger to hit the space bar. The one on my right hand.

I still manage around 70 WPM somehow.

Temari Feb 13, 2007 03:22 PM

I'm trying to notice which one I use while writing this, and its really hard to type while focusing on which thumb is the dominate one. I'm alternating, but for the most part its the right one. I think it depends on what the last letter of the word is... what hand is being used. Weird to think about while typing. Making it hard to type. Whoas. @_@

Anyways, I took a typing class in high school, though I can tell you that I dont really use half the rules we were taught. I only use my pinkies for the 'A' button and ' ' ' button... that looked weird. lol. Don't know my wpm abilities at this point. I'm ironically a lot slower if I have something to look at and type.

xen0phobia Feb 13, 2007 06:57 PM

i use both pretty evenly actually. It weird because i never really thought about it. I'm not self taught in keyboarding so that might have something to do with it. I took a class in high school to learn. I type by the book ;)

Lalala Feb 13, 2007 07:16 PM

Whaaat? I never use my thumb on the space bar (or any other key), only my index fingers. I never typed the way we were "taught" in our Typing class in the middle school.

Haha I never thought about it but it's so funny that I only type with my index fingers.

Nahual Feb 13, 2007 07:17 PM

I had to check. Right thumb it is! I probably only use the left thumb when I'm playing computer games.

chibilola Feb 14, 2007 01:46 AM

I usually use my left unless I'm in mid-motion to type a word with my left hand.

If my Dad bought me like 3 keyboard games so I can teach myself to type in english would it be self-taught or trained? Cause the program technically taught me how to type... thinking back on it, it forced me to type really fast or it'd kill me. Evil games.

Ryuu Feb 14, 2007 02:30 AM

I usually do it with my right hand - very very rarely with my left hand.

I'm primarily self-taught, which is probably why I'm not an extremely fast typer like some people I know.

Jamma Feb 14, 2007 05:34 AM

Heh, I'm probably one of the worst typers on here then... I use my middle fingers only (and that includes the spacebar).

Thankfully my speed has improved through practice but its still looks and feels a bit awkward. My lack of motivation stops me from devising a better method, but to be honest, if I really cared that much I would've done something about it by now. What matters is it works for me at the moment. :><:
