I usually watch TV in bed without my glasses on for 15-30 minutes. With the lights out and no glasses the eye strain is almost always enough to tire me out. Otherwise I can easily stay awake til dawn most nights if I tried.

That is approximately the same thing I do. While wearing glasses I am more alert and tend to get annoyed with their greasy build ups and they are sticky and agrivating. But sleeping is really hard for me. But straining my eyes will make me sleepy.

Stay up as late as you usually do, then just get up on time. Don't go to sleep or take any energy stimulants, etc during the next day either. Sure, you'll feel exhausted, soulless and probably depressed but then you;ll be able to fall asleep at a regular time.

Most likely your real problem is you're making a choice not to go to school and using a messed up sleep schedule as an excuse.

Working out and Masturbation are probably the best ways I can think of. Also, as said earlier, something boring and/or repetitive. Eventually you'll get tired of it and will start to desire sleep.

I don't often use strategies to fall asleep. Sometimes I find myself going to bed hours before the time I usually do, and if I clear my mind and don't move so much, I'm able to fall asleep quickly. Reading doesn't usually help me.

That's never worked for me. My legs and back start feeling cramped long before sleep ever comes, and I wind up just laying there with closed eyes for an hour. Boring, yet for some reason not sleep-inducing for me.

When I get that urge to whack off in the middle of the night I find it nearly impossible to fall asleep. Even if I wake up at 3 in the morning after an arousing dream, my whole body like perks up and I'm like damnit I need to go jerk off.

nazpyro Feb 5, 2007 11:22 PM

I do nightly workouts as well and drink milk around before going to bed, but neither of those actually make me sleepy. I could stay up pretty easily (and I've been getting up with ease these too, even after only 2-3 hours of sleep). If anything makes my eyes a little heavy, it's subtitles; so I avoid watching anime or foreign movies at night (unless I was planning a marathon). Writing is okay, so I can do some late-night coding (which actually makes me more awake) and chatting, etc.

I hate it when I'm trying to get to sleep and I think all deep like: "How do I know when I slip into unconsciousness? Will I be aware..?". Shit like that keeps me up sometime. When I start thinking I think "Not this crap again...".

But fortunately that doesn't happen to me too often; I find exercise helps, like a few people have said here. I've tried to fall asleep with (ambient) music playing in the background, but I get too distracted by it. Silence, I think, is best when trying to fall asleep.

Unagi Feb 6, 2007 03:09 AM

You do close your eyes, right?

I'm serious! When I was a little kid, there was a period in which I couldn't get myself to sleep. I couldn't figure out why, so one night asked my Mom how to fall asleep. She was pretty much answering me in her sleep, and I noticed her eyes were closed. So, I asked if closing your eyes helps you fall asleep, and she said,"yeah". Tried it and it has worked ever since!

I pull an all nighter, and the next night I'm so tired that it fixes everything. This may not work for some people though, and probably isnt good for you. I've only done it a couple times myself.

Agreed.

Same thing I do, though it doesn't always work. Sometimes after a couple days my sleeping pattern goes back into whack mode. It's good for a short term fix, but for long term I'd say working out and getting up early.

Talk about a bland fucking post, eh?

I agree with this person and everyone else! Winners!

This is what I generally try to do, though it doesn't always work. Personally I find it hard to make it without napping, and the nap ruins the whole operation...

As far as I'm aware, exercise before bed is considered poor "sleep hygiene". It actually stimulates your nervous system.

Make sure you don't use the bed for anything but sleep and sex. If you're a guy, masturbation/sex will definitely help get you to sleep. =)

Domino Feb 6, 2007 12:00 PM

I always find myself falling asleep come 11pm after a day at work. I suppose exercise would help to send you to sleep as well, but seeing as how I rarely do any exercise I wouldn't know.

Such a Lust for Revenge! Feb 6, 2007 01:44 PM

I'm rather fortunate in the fact that exercise or especially caffeine don't do jack shit to me before bedtime. Even if immediately before. I don't think I'm caffeine reactive period, considering I'd take some energy drinks before unloading trucks at UPS and the days I'd skip that I wouldn't even notice a difference.

Smelnick Feb 6, 2007 08:49 PM

Try excersising before bed. do lots during the day so your body will get tired.

myeronetwo Feb 14, 2007 10:40 PM

fall asleep

Hi,

I guess routine, routine, routine. Try to sleep at the same time, quite and calm music do work if you try not to think too much. Make sure you don't watch TV prior sleep at least 30 minutes, let you mind be peace. Also in research showed that if you have mineral deficiency, it will make your brain restless and body stress, so it is no harm to have it check out.

myeronetwo ;)

chibilola Feb 14, 2007 11:17 PM

It said some where that reading or watching tv will actualy stimulate the brain, causing you to stay awake, soft music helps you dose off but anything else will activate your ears to listen to sounds making your brain active also. (But it works for everyone I know, so it's probably for people who needs absolute silence)
Excersize causes your body to create chemicals to make you feel happy (eventually dose off), but those excersizes needs to make you to sweat at least for it to work. 50 push ups and 50 situps should be enough for most people to break some sweat.

When I can't sleep, it's usually because I'm thinking what I need to do the next day or something I'm worried aobut. So I get a pen and paper and write like a reminder/agenda for myself. If not writing (not typing) a journal entry helps, it doesn't take me long until my hand cramps out and I go on to bed by then.

Hope this helped a bit.

Leknaat Feb 14, 2007 11:32 PM

Relax in a tub of hot water. When you start falling asleep in the tub--you're ready.

Change your alarm clock. You CAN get used to the alarm so it becomes nothing more than background noise.

kinkymagic Feb 15, 2007 07:18 AM

Just drink yourself unconcious and hope you don't get a hangover, that's what I normally do.

Dude, I often think the EXACT same thing. Been having a problem with that lately. I hate it when that happens too, cause then I just get more and more angry as I realize precious minutes are passing by and actually falling asleep becomes impossible. One time this really weird thing happed to me and I swear I was almost able to "be conscious" as I fell asleep. This really strange wave crept up over me and I felt like I was about to drift off into a 4th dimension or die or something. Then I came to and it kinda freaked me out. Anyway, you're not alone man.

lixiuguang Feb 15, 2007 07:50 AM

Working out would be best solution to this, I think. I've had this knid of problem myself a few times. Try to do something to suck the energy all out. You'll be down in no time. This always work for me. ;)

K_ Takahashi Feb 15, 2007 02:49 PM

I usually smoke a bowl and lurk on the internet for a few hours, tires me out epsecially when I just came home from work.

Noodles Feb 28, 2007 10:06 PM

You can use a supplement call Melatonin. You can purchase it at any health store. It helps correct sleeping disorders and is helpful during jet lags. If you don't want to take a supplement you can always soak up some sun cause your body creates Melatonin by it's self. ^_^

Drink warm milk, read a good book, take a long relaxing bath/ shower. Or you could get up early that usually makes me tired at night, especially if I've done some physical activity.

I would agree that working out really helps in getting to sleep and waking up refeshed. Another thing is not eating too much sugar or junk food. That usually causes problems. Nutrition is important in maintaining a constant sleep pattern. Sometimes its hard to avoid however.
