Oh, you're talking about shawls.

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b4...land/shawl.jpg

Yes, those do look rather like peasant garb, but they're nice when they're worn for their intended purpose (cool, not cold days...just enough to warm your shoulders and arms) and not as a fashion accessory.

JackyBoy Jan 11, 2007 02:01 PM

Ah thank you. Yes, that's what I was referring to. Oddly that one in the picture doesn't look too bad either. The ones I typically see are about 3 times the size. The girl wearing it usually looks like they're being swallowed up like Spawn with his massive cape. Sometimes they have frilly material around the edge too which increases the eye sore-ness.

franposis Jan 11, 2007 02:06 PM

-shakes head- it's not shawls you're thinking of. It's ponchos!

deadsky Jan 11, 2007 02:10 PM

poncho's are odd things...a cross bettween a binbag and a cape 0.o

deadsky Jan 11, 2007 02:13 PM

I'm aware of that :P but I've only ever come across them at amusement parks and those are overpriced binbags

deadsky Jan 11, 2007 02:19 PM

fair play :)

Yes, I know that. :) It would still be far more fun to throw a bucket of water over the non-waterproof ones.

Destroyed/Very Worn looking clothing - I seriously seen a pair of jeans that had a label that stated along the lines of "This style is dyed with a special ink to give it a worn look" like honestly, when I buy things new, I like them looking like NEW please -__-"

Purposely poor constructed clothes - meaning t-shirts, skirts, and probebly pants (although I havn't ran into them yet) that anr't serged and just look like it's some kinda cut and paste job. This also includes clothing that has threads purposely dangling from the bottom of the skirts and tshirt sleves that look like they're fraying BUT! supposetly it's ment to be that way... when it's new (w00h...)

Ponchos and shrawls arn't probebly so great as far as "fashion sense" goes these days - although I have them they're knit in wool mix material and they beat my blanket any day cuz I just fall and trip on those due to it's length (and plus, if ya gotta go somewhere out of your snuggly chair you're not brining this huge massive blanket around you and you look like a saussage wiggling your way towards somewhere ... unless you drag it of course :p)

Drex Jan 11, 2007 02:41 PM

Hah, came across another one walking to class this morning: guys who walk around in the cold wearing a scarf, big ski gloves, and a t-shirt. ...what?!

Ugh I know what you mean, it's nearly impossible to find jeans without stupid rips or "stretch marks". I tjhink Levi's are one of the few brands that still have plain jeans anymore and they cost a pretty penny.

I can't help that every time someone mentions the poochy lips I think about this chick. I was going to post a link to one of the pictures she had in the PYP thread, but her myspace page was so conveniently displayed on her profile that I couldn't resist.

But maybe I'm just the only dude in the world that doesn't check his phone every five seconds.

Agreed. I don't like it either, and I don't wanna pay for a "text messaging plan"; and at 10 cents a message, it's really cheaper (and easier) to just call me and leave a message or IM. Ten cents isn't much, but when you look back at, say, the ten messages you received last month, it's like "Damn, I paid a dollar for those?" For an occasional greeting, it's okay, but I don't like the regular use of it. Since I pay the cell phone bill in my house, I got annoyed by my brother last month because he received some 300+ text messages from one of his friends... all the same message too. =/

In light of 24 premiering, the only situation I can think of where text messaging might be useful is if you're a hostage, but have access to a phone in your pocket. Now that would be some elite skills there to navigate the menu and type your message and all (I think there was a similar scene in The Departed); then again you could just dial 911 and leave it off-hook. But then there could be a PHOENIX SHIELD of some sort and all your signals are fucked anyway. =p

Levis are decently priced. Around 30 bucks and even cheaper if there are sales going on. I've seen pants that are 'used' for more than 80 bucks.
I hate that used, worn look as well.

I also hate it when people wear a blazer over jeans. That just looks fucking tacky. And then they wear a button up shirt with a tie, yet the top button isn't buttoned and the tie is hanging lose. Either wear it right or not at all.

And hey, if ponchos are good enough for Clint Eastwood, then they're good enough for me.

In England Levis go for about 40-50 pounds that's about 80-100 dollars.
They might be dahm good jeans, but it's not affordable when your a student.

I know someone who spent 200 pounds on ripped jeans...some people are wierd
:eye:

I'm wondering which is better for trend spotting: a college campus or a high school campus. I seem to recall pointless trends in high school, but since coming to college back in 2003, some of the most tacky/pointless trends have been personally spotted here.

I agree that most of the mentioned trends so far are in fact pretty ridiculous. The only one I can think of that's not already mentioned would be those cheer skirts that went around for a little while. Basically it's a cheer leader skirt, but not "labeled" as such. In other words, one of these would be mixed with a regular top. Sometimes these would be accompanied by the Uggs. *sigh*

deadsky Jan 11, 2007 06:18 PM

I think the wierdest trend I've seen since i started uni was the whole inside-out-hood on coats.....seriously....why? Sometimes i can understand
why people want to look daft but this just doesn't make any sense :twitch:

Von Jan 11, 2007 06:30 PM

Besides clothing knock-offs, the trend that most irritates me is the hate. There is an overwhelming aura of negativity around school and the internet now, and I think it is just because people view hate as something in vogue. If you can find something to hate in common, you can hate together!

What happened to plain old 'interests'?

This afflicts the men as well; we're expected to wear (now an actual genre of clothing) skinny jeans, which look stupid, period.

Not to mention the chaffing on said boy parts :o_O: Although it's nice that more t-shirts come in small now.

Then go to Mexico. You can buy 10 for what you'd pay for one here in the States. And I'm still a little hazy as to what a "binbag" is.

Also, FUCK shawls. It's all about zarapes.

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e2...unk/zarape.jpg

I used to have 3 of these in assorted colors and I have NO clue what happened to them. :(

Be very, very careful who you reveal that information to. Very.
