From what I know of their respective styles, I'd say it's more likely Zur wrote Unknown--it's got a definite classical bent to it, like a lot of the composer's work does. Brandon always struck me as being more melodic and contemporary. I could be wrong, of course.

Wait for me to make my vote!!!! one moment...

Done!

(3pt) Mushihimesama Original Sound Track - Shinju Heading to the Forest - Stage 1 (7.5)
Catchy, I really like Hosoe sometimes, and this one definitely meets the requirements for a high calibur catchy theme.

(2pt) Gyakuten Saiban Orchestra Album ~GYAKUTEN MEETS ORCHESTRA~ - Oo-edo Soldier Tonosaman(7)
I kind of like the orchestration in the track. It sounds like a well-composed tune that has both Asian and western influences mixed together in neat ways.

(1pt) Let's Make a Pro Baseball Team! ~ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK~ - Forty Year Plan, are you finished? (6.5)
Mmm, I like the way the music actually works together to make a pretty decent song. This looks like something I also might be looking at.

Ape Escape 3 (Game Rip) - Wintersville (6.5)
Although the percussion does not completely seem right to me, the wind instruments and the mix of the winterfest make this song a pretty decent one for me.

Space Invaders '91 (Game Rip) - Rounds 2, 11, 14 (6.5)
I actually Kind of like this chiptune, especially after listening to Wild Arms 5 music for the last week.

The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall (PC Game Rip) - Winter 1 (6.5)
Yep, I'm same with Drakken here. It's really the strings and the development of the instruments at around 0:54 that make this song slightly interesting.

Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows - Unknown 14 (5.5)
It's actually quite a beautiful track, although it's probably something that's really my taste. I also have this feeling that the broken chord progressions created by the piano aren't very original. They sound like they've come from some Romantic composer note for note.

Rudra no Hihou (Game Rip) - Strange Encounter (5.5)
Thing song doesn't really catch me up that much. I also kind of think it's just an average boring battle track.

Kaleb.G Jan 7, 2007 09:23 PM

Ok, I'll vote. Give me a couple minutes.

Additional Spam:
I actually already listened through this list at least twice, but nothing in here made me shit my pants, so I was about to just forget about voting this week. Turns out I have some extra time.

3 point(s) :: Rudra no Hihou (Game Rip) - Strange Encounter
Sweet action melody that reminds me of something from the NES Ninja Gaiden games. However, I don't know if it's just me, but the recording quality seems a bit low.

2 point(s) :: The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall (PC Game Rip) - Winter 1
Very pleasant but unfortunately short. I believe this was in one of the Slightly Dark Christmas compilations, because it sounds familiar.

1 point(s) :: Mushihimesama Original Sound Track - Shinju Heading to the Forest - Stage 1 <Arranged>
This would be getting three points if it were the original version. I don't like the arranged version nearly as much. It's pretty poor for being done by Hosoe. I don't know if the instrumentation used in this version is supposed to be an homage to a past work or what; all I know is that it's not as good as the instrumentation in Namiki's version. Nevertheless, it's still good enough to get a point.

I think that we should ban DH from further competition. There's just no way to beat him :D

Drakken Jan 7, 2007 10:42 PM

Haha, so true. I'm glad my nom was well-liked, at least; placing is a rarity for me.

DH, out of curiosity, do you have a list of future noms (like, prepared in advance)? Or is your selection so good that you just say, "Oh, it's time to nominate something," you pick a song you like, and it wins? :p

TheKnightOfNee Jan 8, 2007 12:40 AM

Yay! Another 7th place finish!

I bet it would be fun to switch places with DH for a day.

It's funny your recognized that. When I first heard it, I was immediately reminded of what someone said about Hosoe:

Nintendo Rep: "The Legend of Zelda! Swords, sorcery and adventure! What do you think, Mr. Hosoe?"
Shinji Hosoe: "*UNTZ UNTZ UNTZ*"

:tpg: :tpg: :tpg: hey, Hosoe got luck it was already techno, but the track is still good. And also directs the spirit that new year should have.

Kaleb.G Jan 8, 2007 10:49 AM

Just stating for the record that I think Hosoe has composed some great albums. I own both the Ibara and Under Defeat OSTs. I just thought this arrangement was weaksauce.

Wow, that's gold medal number nine and the second in three weeks. You folks still have great taste in music! Glad to see most of you enjoy the JAZZIN' I've been nominating.

Better yet, how about having a "Song of the Week - DH Edition" featuring only nominations by myself :D
j/k

I use foobar as my media player which allows you to rate tracks similar to i-tunes so it's easy to sort my collection by rating. From the list of my top-rated tracks, I select the ones which I know will appeal to voters. When the contest first started over a year ago, I made a list of about 15 or so tracks which I knew I would be nominating at some point down the line. New discoveries were also added to the list. For the most part, I've nominated tracks which have great melodies along with high quality and varied instrumentation which usually hits the spot for most voters. I may have been a bit "cheap" by almost exclusively nominating arrangements as well as a few non-vgm pieces but hey, it's all within the rules. I just want folks to be exposed to great vgm and vgm-related material which is the whole point of this event.

Now, off to scour my list for gold medal number 10 :p

looooooooooooooooool

So, I was looking through the voting archive, and it turns out that I forgot to include my points in the point totals for this week. Luckily, they didn't actually change the standings, just the point totals. I've updated the results seven posts up accordingly.

orion_mk3 Apr 14, 2007 11:38 PM

Hm, sort of like when I found that mistake in Week 03, eh?

Incidentally, why aren't you in the current SoTW thread voting it up? I'm afraid this latest week will be our most sparse ever, despite GFF's return.

THE POWER OF WATER Apr 15, 2007 04:38 AM

Kinda! Except this change didn't affect the standings, and so definitely nothing as tragic as what happened with that batch of tracks, thankfully.

I usually vote late, but the past few weeks I've been voting Sunday afternoon because schoolwork and all that jazz has been keeping me superbusy.
