for battletoads on NES, the speed bikes level is just crazy. i can get past that pretty easily now, i just cant beat the level after that, the one with the snowmen.

SPEEDERBIKE LEVEL IS PAIN.

Actually I can say that as a kid it took a **LOT** of time and practice, but I did actually beat the game. The levels after the speedbikes seemed a lot easier to me with the exception of those fucking duct tunnels and the final stage. The Turbo Tunnel Speederbikes was one thing, but the killer for me was that blankety-blank volcano airbike level.

I HATED THAT THING WITH A PASSION. I'd purposely take the warp to avoid it. I could never beat that stage until I got much older. At this point the speedbikes are easy, but yeah, that game is definately a huge challenge...

Is there any specific reason why Rare opted to neither revive the series or port it or anything? I have to imagine that its one of the oldest properties they get asked about.

I could beat the snake level with practice. But that volcano speedbike stage. OMG. Someone needs to be shot for that nonsense.

Yes. Grammar error. :)

Rat Race! :D That stage was INCREDIBLY fun. It's actually kind of easy. The trick I used was A) Never stop moving. EVER. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVER. B) On straightaways, try and hit the rat so he'd bounce off a wall and go backwards buying you another second of time. Same goes for areas near gas vents. C) The rat can't differentiate between holes, so...say...if the platforms are moving at the same speed you can change your direction to fall through all of them at once without ever stopping. Because the rat only changes direction unless he hits a wall, this is where you gain large amounts of space between you and him in order to get ahead. It takes practice, but all those methods worked for me.

yes. -__- That one always came down to quick reflexes and a lot of luck. You pretty much have to be prepared to hit the controller's directions as soon as you see a turn and have the more complex sections memorized almost like inserting a game code.

What always would get me though was not the stages, but the fact that you'd have to fight a boss AFTER a particularly intense stage like those. It almost felt unfair. :(

Battletoads...gosh...I never found a game more annoying save for CastleMania or whateve rit was called (Castle something in which you had like all sorts of different color keys that unlocked different colored doors. you had fifty lives, and you needed all of them).

I beat it. First with Game Genie to bounce between levels. Then I went through it. I hate level 3. I HATE level 11 (the saw level). I saw the ending though. Win!

I've always been curious why Rare never revived this or Snake Rattle 'n' Roll either. I think it has something to do with TradeWest not existing anymore or something and those franchises (well Battletoads at least) being buried with them. I could be wrong though.

I highly suggest that you all should try out, the 'Beats of Rage' version of BattleToads!
The PC version of, this excellent game, can be found in this thread...

Had to be done since I think you summed it up in the least number of words XD I only ever played it on emulator and after clearing the bike section once only to get owned by the boss I was pretty much with a feeling of yeah... why bother... I think battletoads was one of those first games to pretty much encourage players to be exspected to have flawless runs through a video game, eliminating any signs of... what's that word... oh yeah fun!

Snake Rattle and Roll had a pretty similar level of frustration involved too (ice stage anyone?) as well as Kid Chameleon, especially when you realise you don't do the levels in numerical order if you want to keep your sanity, because the stages are a maze in itself (I remeber one attempt I ended up going in circles replaying levels!) although that was made by another company. I'm amazed there was so many reports of battletoads though for the amount of frustration they caused gamers.

for anyone who needs reminding of the bike stage rage they felt (random toilet humour optional)

Those Rare fuckers need to pull their head out of their ass already and make a Snake Rattle N Roll sequel.

I don't care what console it's for, it needs to happen. PS2, 360, Wii, PS3, whatever. Also I just watched the above video.. wow, I don't recall it being that long at all. After awhile it doesn't even look like you're moving. That was seriously 7 and a half minutes of my life wasted. :(

suicidalducky Jan 13, 2007 12:02 AM

The game was painful. The level drove me nuts that I used the game genie to cheat. Even with the game genie, the game was still painful.

I remember that game from when I was like 8 years old..... Wow... that was a long time ago. didn't get very far in it. I wasn't a very patient videogamer in those days. But, I do remember having some fun in it. It was definitely a sweet game during its time... :)

Oh man, that brought back some painful memories. The fact that the guy in the video played 2 player mode made it worse lol. If either one of you screws up and dies, then the game forces you to replay the last checkpoint (sounds like Halo 2 on legendary). Again, I think Battletoads could've been a sweet game, if not for that damn speederbike level. If it was just a bonus stage, I wouldn't care. I never got to the later stages (and I tried really hard to get ot them, but you can only crash so many times in that level before you want to slam the game against the wall or roast it in the microwave), so I never got to see the cool designs and what not the developers made.

The fact that it's a regular level instead of a bonus stage, and that it's in virtually every Battletoads game (at least in Battletoads/Double Dragon, they slowed down the speederbike part, and let you fight to break up the monotony, but then this is ruined by the spaceship stage, which I never would've beat without an infinite lives cheat, having died about 20 times on that stage) ensured that the series doing well as a franchise ended the same way you crashed into those walls (or missed a jump) lol.

Musharraf Jan 13, 2007 02:53 PM

I completed the first stage until to the point where you are supposed to fall off the bicycle

Bodomi Jan 13, 2007 03:44 PM

I actually did beat the game when I was a kid, without using the teleport at the 3rd level.

Today, I wonder how in the hell I did it.
Now I just fail.

aoidra Jan 15, 2007 12:53 AM

Battletoads was ones of the harder game that I ever play, I just play the SNES version but I couldn't beat it. The only BATTLETOADS version that I beated was the Battletoads and Double dragon.

Sir Lavitz of B Jan 26, 2007 09:11 AM

Roper, I hate that guy!

Wow, I can't believe so many people remember this game. That mortorcycle part, I hated it, but my passonate hate was with Roper, that massive Arnold Schwarzenegger, minigun carrying, majafa! And thatship place with all that fire, animatronic devil. That's it, I've said what I wanted about it.

Shiny McShine Jan 27, 2007 12:00 AM

I remember Battletoads. I didn't know anyone when I was a kid that didn't own this game. Everybody I know would play it for hours and, like many others, could never get past that horrid snake level though. That speeder bike level sure was fun though.

ashaman Jan 28, 2007 03:32 PM

This was my favorite game of all time for many years, and it still is if I don't count RPGs. I poured 100s of hours into the NES game. I would beat a level, try the next level, die many times but get a little further each time, and then game over. I kept doing this until I memorized each level and they became easy(ier). I probably spent 10-30 levels per level doing this, and after enough repetition (and game overs) was able to memorize the entire game. The warps helped, as did the multi-1up trick on level 2. Later on I picked up a Nintendo Power which had all of the levels mapped out. I wish had that earlier.

I loved how every level in the game was completely different and required all new strategies. The Clinger Winger is probably my favorite. And the "3D" effects on the last level completely blew me away (sometimes literally, due to those damn blowing clouds).

Good times, I wish they would make another one but they would probably add save points and psuedo-unlimited lives like all new platformers do now. Kids now are a bunch of pansies and don't know what real difficulty is like ;)

On the same topic, anyone remember the Battletoads cartoon and the arcade game?
