I can only judge from the small trailer, as I've yet to see the 15 minute one, but I guess playing as Raiden would be any fun... At this point he looks pretty damn invincible. He takes down Gear like only Solidus Snake has done it so far. What fun would that be? Except for the first five minutes, of course...

  • While Raiden's role is still vague you can think of him as the new Gray Fox, helping Snake out when he's in a pinch. Raiden will NOT be playable.
  • MGS4 doesn't just take place in one location but multiple regions and countries across the world.

Uh, source please? What do you mean "the old gameplay is out"? No more sneaking around is allowed? Who said it takes place in multiple countries? That surely means seperate chapters.

I saw the MGS4 figure about a month ago. Great stuff. It's the most game-accurate figure yet. I hope that it comes to the U.S. and that it's far less expensive than the $100+ price tag of the 12 inch MGS3 figures.

Hey, wouldn't this be funny if you end up having a choice? (or rather a non-choice like killing the Boss in 3)

No problem. :)

It'll most likely be $115-125 judging by the Medicome stuff Sideshow currently has for order on their site which is still alot cheaper than going through the likes of Play-Asia or anywhere else which were charging upwards of $195 IIRC for the MGS3 figures.

I'll most likely have to buy 2 though: one for home and one for work to display since some of our kit and technology is on the weapon Snake is holding, specifically the holographic sight. :)

Because of its early state of development, Hideo Kojima was unable to show a playable build of Metal Gear Solid 4. "We can't reveal much of our secrets right now," he said. "We're changing the system completely. The MGS3 system we had was good, but we're not using that. We tore it apart and are creating a new engine from scratch, and are creating whole new gameplay for Metal Gear Solid 4," he said
IGN has some more info here:

More info thanks to Solid-Neo-Snake from the IGN board:

As some of you heard there was a conference yesterday that covered MGS4, Gears of War, and Red Steel, I attended and I'll post some of the more interesting things Kojima said.

-Raiden will not be playable in any form.
-They have taken particular care in the way the Metal Gears move to make them feel alive.
-When one of the Metal Gear's busts through the wall its destroyed differently each time due to the new physics based destructable enviroments.
-The Solid Eye system is still planned for the final game.
-You'll be able to fight alongside the Arab soldiers you see in the beginning of the trailer.
-He intends to showoff what they've done with the gameplay at TGS.

Thats pretty much it, there will also be more info on May 12 when the newest issue of Famitsu is released, it has an interview with Kojima.
Mark your calenders: September 22nd, Tokyo Game Show.

Considering the articles I've read about their Rei and Asuka figures, I'd say it's worth every penny. Can't wait to get my hands on this sweet ass figure.

Heh, looks like I was right. Afterall, HK has yet to show any gameplay footage.

Oh and I love how HK derived "is" and "old" out of Solid to explain the Old Snake thing. It's great how he comes up with this stuff.
Quote:

Snake is an old timer in Metal Gear Solid 4. We're not sure if this was just a convenience that was stumbled upon by someone at Kojima Productions recently, but Kojima pointed out to the magazine that if you remove the I and S from "SOLID," you get "IS." Once "IS," a word for existence (Kojima's explanation is directed at Japanese readers who may not know what "Is" means), has been removed from "SOLID," you're left with "OLD." Or, according to Kojima, a Snake that

Still too early to show gameplay??

Surprising 'cause the release is 2007,Kojima and team must be working on the double for this project to meet deadline.

what does IS mean in jap??

Stealth May 12, 2006 11:10 AM

The deadline isn't January 1st or anything. Probably Summer 07.

Well, considering they've got textures/models/physics down already, all they really need in time for September is a fully playable demo level. Who knows how much coding they've already got out of the way...

Wonder if they already know what to do with the camera...
SO interesting!

Double Post:
Oh, I never thought that when Kojima said that he was still to improve the graphics from TGS that he was serious, but it looks like he did. Take note by checking out TGS '05 Snake's mustache, and his new one. What a difference.

Inhert May 12, 2006 04:05 PM

there's one thing that bother me though, even if I can,t realy make a good idea with those trailer, I think MGS4 suffer the same problem as all MGS... face expresion. They still really like in the "face motion" I think. The scene with Fortune crying over camp was a really good exemple, the voice acting was great but her face was neutral no expression >.> and whenI look a thos etrailer, sure the 3D and texture is great, the lips sync seem very good, but they still seem to have the exact same expression all the time >.>

Pietak May 12, 2006 04:09 PM

Interesting. In the latest KPReport, Ryan and Ken make note of the new facial expressions that they are able to make with the PS3 now. It's mostly noticable when snake comes aboard the Heli to meet Colonel, or when Otacon is crying over the fate of what is to happen. Not to mention the huge expression of Naomi... Not sure how you missed Meryl's smirk either...

Spatula May 12, 2006 04:26 PM

You can tell there's quite a leap in terms of complexity in the facial expressions, from say MGS3 to what we're seeing now. However, I agree with Inhert that some of the facial expressions still seem somewhat static. I think partially is that parts of the face should "wrinkle", not by much, but to give the face more subtle motions in a way. Nevertheless, in terms of physical appearance, much of this is on the up and up. <3 Meryl now. Before in MGS1, I still remember the block faces and found her unattractive, gee I wonder why. Not to say that PS1 graphics were bad - they were excellent for that time, but to see where we are now is just worlds apart.

Sexninja May 12, 2006 05:06 PM

Koji said that his team is totally revampin the engine, building new one from scratch.
Considering the fact that Nextgen takes even more time,i am skeptical about how his team would be able to write a new engine, create more cutscenes, music, voiceacting, testing and online, even till end of 2007.

I hope that it wont be a rush up job.

Cel May 12, 2006 06:54 PM

No, I agree with the whole facial expression thing. Smirks aren't expression-heavy, I think what he means is more facial movement, he wants to see realism. Sure these guys are all bad ass and probably are void of expression, but we'll see how it turns out. As long as the game doesn't involve really shitty dialogue and telling snake about what it is to be a soldier (rofl..) and as long as there is no shitty bad guys with retarded names, this will be a winner.

With the setting they've established, it's almost impossible to involve anything corny, but hey, he's Hideo, he'll FIND A WAY.

Pietak May 12, 2006 10:29 PM

The times dictate who are enemies are on the battlefield. One may be friend, and then may turn to be enemy.

Loved those scenes, seemed really cinematic, and thought-provoking.

They've been working on it Since 05 already. And Kojima never releases crappy work. He'll release it when it's ready.

Mobius One May 13, 2006 12:25 AM

They use motion capture to help animate the faces and match the lips to the actual words now. I wonder if they'll redo the lip syncing for the English version. If they use motion capture, it seems like it would stream line the process of animating the talking, making it easier/less time consuming to do.

Didn't Kojima say that Metal Gear's trademark "exclamation mark over enemy soldier's heads" would not return in MGS4 and that the enemy soldier's facial expressions would be good enough to let you know when you've been spotted? Seeing how much more serious the tone of MGS4 seems, I don't mind the missing exlamation marks in order to make the game more realistic. I just hope my tiny non-HD TV will let me see what enemy soldiers are thinking.

Spatula May 13, 2006 02:35 AM

But then it's just not quite MGS. I found myself somewhat startled everytime I was caught off guard. When there's the giant "!" over the guard, it makes me feel like "OH FUCK, GOTTA BOUNCE!" and either take down the guy or get the hell out of there. Without it would remind me of Splinter Cell, where sometimes an alarm will go off if they sound it. It's not as tense, I find

CVG: Can you tell me a bit more about the online features in MGS 4 and Metal Gear Online?

Kojima: Of course, MGS 3 has online battle functions and downloads and these will feature in MGS 4. Basically the MGO project is moving by itself and it might be packaged with MGS 4 as a second disc or there's still a possibility of selling it as a stand alone game. Therefore, the MGO project will be the centre of online activity - of course, if it comes with MGS 4 it will be for PS3 but if not, it could be for something else but we haven't decided. On the stand alone side, everything you see in the current online version of MGS 3 will be available in MGS 4.

I seem Online will delay 'cause of deadline of 2007.
And i smell 360 too.

CVG: When will MGS 4 be playable?

Kojima: Well, since MGS 4 is due to be released in 2007, it think will be playable at next E3 at the latest. The current state of play is that we're changing the gameplay every day. We don't want to serve something to people that isn't built or set in stone because my team wouldn't be satisfied.

There you have it, no playable till E32007.

As a game designer, I'm very interested in creating something for the Wii. I'd like to run away from MGS 4 creation and create something for the Wii but unfortunately, I don't have anything that I can announce at the moment. I have lots of ideas for Wii but I have a heavy schedule with MGS 4 and Metal Gear Online

Sad.

What about Liquid Ocelot? Is Liquid in complete control of Ocelot now, or does he still only appear when Snake's around?

Cirno May 14, 2006 03:48 AM

If Ocelot isn't Ocelot, then MGS4 is finished.

Liquid's cool and all, but he can't replace a man who talks about sliding a long, silver bullet into a well-greased chamber.

Stealth May 14, 2006 12:01 PM

Do I even have to point out how stupid it is to think MGS4 will fail without Ocelot in it?

And no, Ocelot is completely taken over by Liquid now. Though I can guarantee you that we'll hear more about Ocelot to tie things up.

Kamui May 14, 2006 12:22 PM

Question

Spoiler:
Why is Snake so old....? After watching the trailer and comparing to the other characters, Meryl/Otacon, I still can't explain why Snake aged so much and fast... Did he body started to decay that fast in result of the "Les Enfants Terribles" project?

Stealth May 14, 2006 12:32 PM

Spoiler:
His aging is accelerated because of his genes. Exactly how Solidus in MGS2 was a clone of Snake and Liquid, but was much older. So the answer to your question is Yes.

Cel May 14, 2006 01:56 PM

Raiden is gonna cut Ocelot's arm off, (again). You heard it here first.
