Two questions for you all.....

Wiimote + PS3 controller = lawsuit????

and

Did developers know about this new "innovative" controller functionality before today? Because if they did, I don't think anyone would be quite so excited about Wii.
Which makes it feel even more like "Me too!! Me too!! I can do that!! Watch me!!"

PS3 will sell well because of

- PlayStation logo
- Madden
- Square-Enix
- Insert other reasons here that I can't predict because it's not due out until November but I'm guessing it'll sell well even though it's six hundred dollars or about eight thousand dollars Australian and also I wonder what will be on the demo disc, hopefully a video of someone falling over that'd be excellent time for lunch!

I hope they make a game where all you do is talk with Tiger.

"YES."

Ah, but Madden isn't PS3 exclusive...

Also, Square-Enix is making games for all 3 next gen systems.

Hahahaha holy shit <3 <3 ='D
I would instantly rush out and try to pre-order that the day it's announced. I'd drive a jeep there, too.

Edit! Yeah Jazz, but nobody is going to care about Square-Enix's stinky sloppy seconds for those other two machines. "Dragon Qu-" "SHUT UP WHERE'S FINAL FANTASY XIII AUUUGH"

Definitely. Overall, this wasn't the greatest showing from Sony in my opinion. If Microsoft's really got Halo 3, they can top this. If Nintendo's got some playable games, they can definitely beat the Warhawk demo for sure. The "Resistance" game by Insomniac was terrible, and perhaps the lowest point for the PS3.

I don't venture in here very much, but I'm now suddenly very glad I won my XBox 360. $500 or $600 is FAR too expensive, especially for a ripoff of a system that's bound to be loads cheaper.

El Ray Fernando May 8, 2006 09:22 PM

I think it was kind of a mistake to suddenly announce the price like that, quickly end the show and run away.

"....And the PS3 will be $600, k thnx bye"

Taterdemalion May 8, 2006 09:25 PM

About the new DualShock, I do recall Phil Harrison saying that there was movement across x,y and z axes. So it isn't quite as limited as some have cried. And how can anyone make comparisons between the PS3 controller and the Wii controller when nobody has viewed the Wii controller in action?

And perhaps I may be playing devil's advocate, but we can't prove 100% Sony ripped off Nintendo. Their projects may have been developed in parallel and independently. We hadn't recieved any word about the controller in a year, and that ws before Wiimote was introduced. I guess the only thing that will settle this is a patent search.

Lawsuit?

I really think that might happen with this one. Nintendo is AWFUL protective of their intellectual property and patents. They might hit this one head on. Speculation? Yes. Probability? Possibly.

EDIT: Saw this posted at IGN.

6:33 -- Kuturagi takes the stage. He introduces the PS3 controlled ... and it's the PS3 controller?!? It looks exactly the same, but it has many new function. Most importantly, it has "6 degrees" of motion-sensing movement. (Um, Nintendo, what do you have to say about this?) You can move it up and down, you have pitch and yaw and roll movement, and it's all still wireless and, in fact, lighter than PS2's DualShock.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/705/705742p1.html

Does that clear up the controller movement questions?

It doesn't matter, everyone including me will call Sony wiinies on this.

Wall Feces May 8, 2006 09:30 PM

Yeah, I would say Sony developing analog control and then force feedback for their controller after the N64 was released was really just a coincidence. Kinda like this whole "free movement" thing.

El Ray Fernando May 8, 2006 09:31 PM

Seriously can you Wii fans give it a rest, just wait till the Nintendo conference.

Foshi May 8, 2006 09:32 PM

Awesomness. The controller looks great; just what I thought they would do with the design. Motion sensing is a nice idea; just like Nintendo, but I doubt it will be put to any good use. Price point is no prob, its a hellva lot cheaper than a $5000 gaming computer. I already have all of the money saved up anyway from not buying a 360. MGS4, and FFXIII look to be the big hooks for the PS3. $500 is really not all that bad, considering all that we are getting for our money. Sony is taking the lose here. If they just keep up with the exclusive games they should have nothing to worry about. All of their fans from the previous systems will defininetly jump aboard. I know I will. PS3 and Wii for me.

Why? It's not like anything Nintendo says will undo the likely fact that Sony ripped them off.

Forsakenzoul May 8, 2006 09:35 PM

and its not like all the other people didnt make fun of the Wii controller and idea for months and still are now so stop bitchin

Sony ripped them off by having a motion sensing controller? How so? Motion sensing controllers have been around on the PC for ages. They all suck as the learning curve for them is ridiculous. The controllers are not even remotely alike. Nintendo has their own design and way of doing things. Sony just added some axis control to their design. Neither of these controllers will be anything alike.

Technophile May 8, 2006 09:38 PM

If the feature itself is as good and as fleshed out as Wii's then I wouldn't care. But as of now, it just seems like a cheap, cheap, quickly put together, inferior shot at Nintendo.

Yes but Nintendo's the first company to bring the feature into mainstream console gaming and make it worth the effort. It's just too peculiar that suddenly, Sony implements this feature now.

I love how Sony ganked the Wii-mote functionality.
Something everything thought was a gimmick a year ago is now not only interesting, but stolen before it can even be released.

I guess Sony learned the hard way from laughing off the DS?

Why do people keep calling it the wii-mote, most ridiculous name ever.

Just call it what is, a TV remote, ok. Can't believe Nintendo stole the TV remote idea from people who've been manufacturing TVs for years, what the fuck is this.

Back off nigga, people called the old PS3 controller a "boomerang" for ages and that name is even goofier.

Grubdog May 8, 2006 09:44 PM

It just gets worse, from the official Sony Japan site - http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/rele...f/060509be.pdf (?)

Pursuant to the introduction of this new six-axis sensing system, the vibration
feature that is currently available on DUALSHOCK® and DUALSHOCK®2 controllers for PlayStation and PlayStation®2, will be removed from the new PS3 controller as vibration itself interferes with information detected by the sensor.

EDIT: FIxed link

Oh right, cause TV manufacturers, sans Sony, are in direct competition with Nintendo and offer products for the same exact use. =/

Who are you kidding, the Nintendo Remote will come with channel/volume and option buttons. Nintendo trying to cut into other peoples markets since they can't get their own right.
