Dalkaen Jun 28, 2006 10:46 PM

I'm downloading the documentary as well. Seems like it could be very interesting.

Morrigan Jun 28, 2006 10:54 PM

Oh yeah, Dalkaen - for Therion, um... I would recommend starting with Theli. Or, if you're into death metal, Of Darkness... or Beyond Sanctorum.

But Theli is my favourite. It's just... mind-blowing, really. Only the second Hollenthon album came close to it in terms of bombastic symphonic metal.

Keep in mind, though, that I am an avowed Therion fangirl. I have all their studio albums, and I even got their new box set (which I got for a decent $60 CAD) even though I don't normally buy DVDs (much less music DVDs). So... yeah. But, my taste is impeccable, therefore, if you don't also like Theli, you suck by default. :D

Helloween Jun 28, 2006 11:03 PM

Helloween is set to put out a DVD this year. Unfortunatly they're website is fucked, and it'll probably be a while before they get it fixed, looking at how much it's updated normally.

I know it contains 3 shows, or parts of, from Europe, South America, and another continent, i can't remember. Does anyone know anything else?

Also, thanks for the download knk. Downloading now, and knowing my computer, i should be watching it by tomorrow.

You could check out the GFF Beyond the Boards thread. My AIM is there.

Therion put out a DVD boxset? Sweet. I should get it. I only have Secret of the Runes and love that disc.

Yeah, Therion released Celebrators of Becoming recently - I've yet to get it. A good starting point for Therion's probably Lemuria/Sirius B, then Secret of The Runes - They're both VERY enjoyable, but SoTR takes a bit of getting into...

As for Theli, the only song I really, really liked was "To Mega Therion" (unsurprisingly). I'll have to give it another listen sometime.

Haha, I own an Of Darkness... demo tape. Never actually heard it, though. Is their DM any good?

Helloween Jun 29, 2006 05:06 PM

hey knk, did you mean to only upload the audio to that documentary? I downloaded it, and there was only the audio in that file.

Vemp Jun 29, 2006 06:22 PM

Crap. I wanted to download that documentary.. but 26k dialup isn't enough. How big is the file anyway? Crap.

(listens to some more Adagio)

There is video on mine. You're probably just missing a codec.

Very good, actually. Some of the best old-school occult death metal out there. Then again, as I said, you ARE speaking to the Therion fangirl. But if you don't like The Return, then you probably don't like that kind of death metal.

Strangely, I'm wearing that Therion Mexico tour shirt right now... haha.

Helloween Jun 29, 2006 09:25 PM

My friend stuck these albums onto an MP3 CD for me.

Ecliptica - Sonata Arctica
Silence - Sonata Arctica
Reckoning Night - Sonata Arctica
Songs of Silence - Sonata Arctica
a bunch of Sonata EPs and singles

Liquid Tension Experiments 1 & 2

Loving all of them so far. The LTE albums are missing a few songs each, and seeing as how i have money now, i think i'm gonna support the band and puchase the albums next chance i get.

Anyone else here into LTE or SA?

Morrigan Jun 29, 2006 09:57 PM

At the risk of sounding like a dumb Internet teenager cliché.... Sonata Arctica is gay.

DarkLink2135 Jun 29, 2006 10:13 PM

I like SA. My favorite album has to be silence, but my favorite songs are on Reckoning Night.

Sorry to the people that like them, but I have to second this. I can't abide them in the slightest.

vemp: it's 700mb total.

Vemp Jun 30, 2006 09:25 AM

Sonata Arctica is gay. And the other night, some kid was spamming Dragonforce in some channel in undernet, I told him Dragonforce sucks in way that they sound very bland, and he was like "DRAGONFORCE ROXXORZ!". Oh well.

So, what do you guys think of Dream Evil? I just found an album in one of the DVDs I got from Lentium a year ago. Gave it a listen, and I'm liking it.

elevator Jun 30, 2006 10:40 AM

Thanks a lot for uploading that documentary knkwzrd! I just watched it and I think it´s pretty good as it was purposely done in the point of view of a fan. It covered a lot of aspects of metal - but not in a very broad sense as that would probably be too much to cover. I found a lot of the graphics about bands and what genre they belong to pretty silly and sometimes simply wrong (One can argue about genres, but I think it´s pretty senseless and unnecessary). At one point he said that Death Metal evolved out of Black Metal, which was pretty much the other way round imho.

One thing that I loved were the interviews. I bursted out laughing at the Gorgoroth interview - I haven´t laughed that much in a long time.. Thats kvtl black metal right there.. Comedy gold. Overally it was a nice watch and I liked it better than the last metal documentary that I watched (666 - At Calling Death)
thanks again!

btw: I acknowledge the sentiment of Sonata Arctica being pretty... lame.

DarkLink2135 Jun 30, 2006 11:05 AM

Maybe my tastes in music are a bit too wide :).

I seriously don´t think that this has anything to do with disliking a band.

Well, I meant that I really like Sonata Arctica & Dragonforce as well as many others that I've mentioned, lol, and most people here don't seem to like DF or SA.

Among that, I like every single Queen song ever made....NOT an exaggeration, most classic rock, a lot of new rock... I'm starting to like country, I like classical, celtic, some rap, rock, alternative, techno, soundtracks, some punk, polka, i LOVE ragtime....yeah, pretty much if I listen to anything for a few hours, i start to like it, if not a lot, then at least some.

elevator Jun 30, 2006 11:24 AM

You know, that´s nice and all - but you are not implying that people who don´t like Sonata Arctica or Dragonforce have a narrow sense of music are you :p? I don´t think having a music taste that is broad has anything to do with the liking or disliking of single bands..

Maybe I´m just interpreting it the wrong way

knkwzrd Jun 30, 2006 11:56 AM

I think you're right elevator. I don't think there is a genre I don't listen to, but I definitely think Sonata Arctica is pretty lame. Never really listened to Dragonforce mind you.

Helloween Jun 30, 2006 12:10 PM

So everyone's neutral on LTE then?

As for SA, they'll never make it to my "favourite list". I might go and see a show, cause they do come to winnipeg alot. I like they're sound, they remind me of a faster, more keyboardsey version of Helloween.

As for Liquid Tension Experiment, it's basically Dream Theater minus James Labrie. Therefore, i like it. Tony Levin is a terrific bassist, and stick player. He adds something to the DT line up that seems to be missing with Myung. Myung is still great, but in that i-don't-like-to-do-solos kinda of way.

I'm finding that i'm disliking Arsis more and more every day. They're so repetative, and there's almost no deviation in style. Am i the only one who finds this?

And no one knows anything on Helloween's DVD?

Krelian Jun 30, 2006 12:10 PM

Sonata Arctica has, like, three good songs - "Wildfire", "White Pearl, Black Oceans" and "The Cage". Otherwise they sound like a slightly-more-enjoyable Dragonforce.

LTE, however, kicks ass. "Three Minute Warning" is my favourite track on their first CD, but if you -really- want to get the real LTE experience you should listen to "Instrumedley" by Dream Theater. There's no Tony Levin, but live Paradigm Shift is an automatic win.

In other news... The new Mercenary was leaked. Anyone heard it yet/is it worth downloading?

Just so happens Live at Budokan is one of my favourite concert DVDs of all time. Instrumedly is quite amazing. I'm just a little pissed off that they didn't include any Six Degrees on there.

I also downloaded this sweet little private show they did as a promo for a cymbol company. They do 3 songs for a 45 minute show. It's just a guy recording with a video camera, but it's surprisingly high quality. I don't know all the names of songs so i can't name the songs they do off the top of my head, but i do know they do an extended version of Paradigm shift. One of the best live songs i've ever heard.

I dig Liquid Tension Experiment. Nothing really mind blowing, but very enjoyable.

Anyone a fan of Into Eternity? I can't wait for their new album. Ditto of 3 Inches of Blood.

Ah, the band with the strange song titles :p
I own "Buried In Oblivion" and I really enjoyed it on the first few listens, but I kinda grew sick of it. The (clean) singer´s vocals are kind of annoying to me...

Maybe I´ll check their new album anyway, it could be decent.

Be happy. Score, DT's new live DVD/CD set, has Six Degrees in its entirity... With a full orchestral accompaniment.
