Today's update is a new game mode. I sort of understood it because the trophy fighting thing was sort of the theme of Melee since that's what the opening started out with. But that last part of today's update is both vague and fucked up.

Quote:

In this world, trophies fight.

They know nothing but fighting. Fighting is the sole reason for their existence.

Being turned back into a trophy, being unable to fight, is much like death.

http://www.smashbros.com/en_us/gamem..._070720f-l.jpg

Those are the rules of this world.

But...

When someone...or something...breaks those rules, the world will pay a terrible price...

Is Sakurai on crack or something? "Being turned back into a trophy is much like death"? "The world will pay a terrible price"? Since when did Smash Bros. get so intense? And what the hell is that thing? :gonk:

The Plane Is A Tiger Jul 20, 2007 02:41 AM

Maybe it's a new variation of Adventure mode, but with a storyline? If I had to guess from the pictures, I'd say in the story mode Metaknight is mass-producing fighting droids whose heads vaguely resemble ba-bombs. Maybe they're just this game's version of the Wireframes?

It's really too early to tell, though an actual story to the Adventure mode would be nifty.

Cheezeman3000 Jul 20, 2007 03:10 AM

It looks like Daffy Duck... from HELL.

WHAT THE EFF????

Dopefish Jul 20, 2007 06:49 AM

I don't think that's a game mode, I think it's part of the new intro video.

Have to agree on that part. The pics look a tad bit more detailed than the games.

Wow, most enigmatic update EVER.

Can I be the only one who thought "IN HIS WOOORRRLLLLLLLDDD" when I saw the title of the update, or am I just a very sad man?

Guru Jul 20, 2007 07:51 AM

Pretty sure it has something to do with the story mode. Like how all the characters in Smash are trophies when they're not fighting.

But Mario and Kirby don't want to be turned back in to trophies and so MetaKnight is coming to kick their asses because they're all like "viva la resistance!"

Lukage Jul 20, 2007 11:29 AM

I'm a bit confused on my end. The site shows NO text for this mode. Thanks for the copy pasta. Its been a while since they've announced characters. Get ready for 2 months of music and stage announcements. :(

Well, I dunno. This update appears in the site's game mode section, but under the heading of "???" instead of Game Modes.

The figure looks like a flunky that is fought en masse much like what Tritoch mentioned (Wireframes and Fighting Polygons). The oven mitts on its hands and its eyes make it look comparatively tame for a bad guy, even with the dark colors.

Depends on which version you were thinking of. :D

Smash Bros. with a story? It was bound to happen. Look at Dead or Alive, Mortal Kombat, and Street Fighter II...good gameplay with good story. I expect nothing less from Smash.

Sword Familiar Jul 20, 2007 10:03 PM

Super Smash Bros. Brawl RPG, guys. SSBBRPG. ;)

Seriously speaking though, it looks like some kind of arena where you can use your trophies to battle against each other, much like Pokémon. Seems to have some kind of story mode implemented in it.

Oh wow, Smash Bros. is so far from canon it's not funny. I can't believe you're worried about something sooooooo minor.

Lukage Jul 23, 2007 06:53 AM

Some dumb DK stage today with Meta Knight, so they'll announce that and probably some gay ass music or trophies and we'll still see no new characters through July.

Prime Blue Jul 23, 2007 08:09 AM

What's with all the character fuss?
I'd rather have the element of surprise preserved when buying the game and would like them to reveal some more stages (especially with their music) and new items. That's what makes the game interesting after all.

Heck, Sonic's going to be included anyway. Happy, fanboys? -_-"

Some dumb DK stage? This stage is based on Jungle Beat, the greatest gaming experience ever concieved. This will be the best stage in the game.

WRONG. It'll be the best stage EVER!
Just you look at it, the water keeps flowing down, down, down.

I'll believe it when I see it.

As for the new stage I agree with Dopefish, it's Icicle Mountain all over again. Hate to say it but that was one of the worst stages in Melee. They're going to need something really surprising in there to get me to like that stage.

RacinReaver Jul 23, 2007 11:05 AM

Why'd you hate that stage? I thought it was one of the more fun dynamically moving stages in the game.

FatsDomino Jul 23, 2007 12:16 PM

It's a terrible stage for newbies who can't figure out how to jump.

Cheezeman3000 Jul 23, 2007 12:55 PM

Oh but the icicle stage wasn't as good because of the blocks that prevented people from jumping up. This stage looks like you can jump through everything so hopefully people won't have the same problems. Plus he said it moves really slowly so...
I'm excited! The more interesting levels are being shown now!

Lukage Jul 23, 2007 03:51 PM

I'm worried about new characters because I'd like a MUGEN-like plethora of characters and not just "Well we gave you 2 new ones and a different Samus lol!"

Heck, not even anything new during E3, where they could have gained a bit more attention. Not showcasing the game and not releasing new updates? Its too under the radar.

Yeah, that's what I'm worried about too. Been playing a lot of SSBM with some friends lately and I always hear myself saying "man... there's not enough characters." I really hope they have more new characters than what's been revealed.

So far the new characters are... Snake, Wario, Zero Suit Samus, Pit, Metaknight, and maybe one other? I don't remember.

Metal Sphere Jul 23, 2007 05:05 PM

Didn't Sakurai say he was aiming for a roster of around 40 characters? Even if they wind up with something below that, we'd still be seeing quite a few newcomers.

Hopefully they follow through with the clones deal, axing some or giving them unique movesets (while avoiding any new duplicates amongst the new additions).
