Today's update is a new game mode. I sort of understood it because the trophy fighting thing was sort of the theme of Melee since that's what the opening started out with. But that last part of today's update is both vague and fucked up.

Maybe it's a new variation of Adventure mode, but with a storyline? If I had to guess from the pictures, I'd say in the story mode Metaknight is mass-producing fighting droids whose heads vaguely resemble ba-bombs. Maybe they're just this game's version of the Wireframes?
It's really too early to tell, though an actual story to the Adventure mode would be nifty. |
It looks like Daffy Duck... from HELL.
WHAT THE EFF???? |
I don't think that's a game mode, I think it's part of the new intro video.

Wow, most enigmatic update EVER.
Can I be the only one who thought "IN HIS WOOORRRLLLLLLLDDD" when I saw the title of the update, or am I just a very sad man? |
Pretty sure it has something to do with the story mode. Like how all the characters in Smash are trophies when they're not fighting.
But Mario and Kirby don't want to be turned back in to trophies and so MetaKnight is coming to kick their asses because they're all like "viva la resistance!" |
I'm a bit confused on my end. The site shows NO text for this mode. Thanks for the copy pasta. Its been a while since they've announced characters. Get ready for 2 months of music and stage announcements. :(

The figure looks like a flunky that is fought en masse much like what Tritoch mentioned (Wireframes and Fighting Polygons). The oven mitts on its hands and its eyes make it look comparatively tame for a bad guy, even with the dark colors.

Smash Bros. with a story? It was bound to happen. Look at Dead or Alive, Mortal Kombat, and Street Fighter II...good gameplay with good story. I expect nothing less from Smash. |
Super Smash Bros. Brawl RPG, guys. SSBBRPG. ;)
Seriously speaking though, it looks like some kind of arena where you can use your trophies to battle against each other, much like Pokémon. Seems to have some kind of story mode implemented in it. |

Some dumb DK stage today with Meta Knight, so they'll announce that and probably some gay ass music or trophies and we'll still see no new characters through July.
|
What's with all the character fuss?
I'd rather have the element of surprise preserved when buying the game and would like them to reveal some more stages (especially with their music) and new items. That's what makes the game interesting after all. Heck, Sonic's going to be included anyway. Happy, fanboys? -_-" |

Just you look at it, the water keeps flowing down, down, down. |

As for the new stage I agree with Dopefish, it's Icicle Mountain all over again. Hate to say it but that was one of the worst stages in Melee. They're going to need something really surprising in there to get me to like that stage. |
Why'd you hate that stage? I thought it was one of the more fun dynamically moving stages in the game.
|
It's a terrible stage for newbies who can't figure out how to jump.
|
Oh but the icicle stage wasn't as good because of the blocks that prevented people from jumping up. This stage looks like you can jump through everything so hopefully people won't have the same problems. Plus he said it moves really slowly so...
I'm excited! The more interesting levels are being shown now! |
I'm worried about new characters because I'd like a MUGEN-like plethora of characters and not just "Well we gave you 2 new ones and a different Samus lol!"
Heck, not even anything new during E3, where they could have gained a bit more attention. Not showcasing the game and not releasing new updates? Its too under the radar. |

So far the new characters are... Snake, Wario, Zero Suit Samus, Pit, Metaknight, and maybe one other? I don't remember. |
Didn't Sakurai say he was aiming for a roster of around 40 characters? Even if they wind up with something below that, we'd still be seeing quite a few newcomers.
Hopefully they follow through with the clones deal, axing some or giving them unique movesets (while avoiding any new duplicates amongst the new additions). |
