I think Argumentus and Gabriel might be in some trouble.

FatsDomino Jul 22, 2008 07:16 PM

And mighty thirsty for a can of Surge. Can they be quenched? Let's find out!

Another rules question: Our attack cards have indicators for damage on hit like say, 1[W] + Str Damage. Strength modifiers are pretty self-evident but what does the 1[W] refer to?

No. Hard Pass. Jul 23, 2008 03:03 AM

1[weapon] damage. So whatever the weapon damage is. Paladin's Judgment is 3[W] so it's triple my weapon damage. Which is, I believe, 1d10. So it works out to 3d10.

Animechanic Jul 23, 2008 03:10 AM

So for Brady 1[W] refers to what, a 1d4 since he's just punching things?

Bradylama Jul 23, 2008 03:12 AM

Ok, also strength modifiers aren't as self-evident as I thought. The Cleave card says "an enemy adjacent to you other than the target takes damage equal to your Str." Is that damage equal to my base strength or the strength modifier?

This seems to be the gist of it. I was hoping we'd have found a club or a mace by this point since Argumentus likes bashin things as much as punching them but no dice. :(

Strength Modifier. Which, since you are a FREAKISH 18, I believe is a 3?

Also, I'm not sure how Pang is doing your damage, Brady. Because I've seen you do way over 8.

There's also critical hits he's pulled off so. v:)v

Man, if I'd known Pang was willing to just assign the stat points however we wanted, I'd totally have changed those around a bit.

4? You're a monster.

Animechanic Jul 23, 2008 03:35 AM

Did I just get quoted, reported, or both?

Anyways, if you use cleave with two enemies adjacent to you, and assuming your attack rolls hit both, your damage will end up like this:
Primary target: 1d4 + 4 damage (unarmed attack + strength modifier)
Secondary target: 4 damage (strength modifier)

Also, I can totally see Argumentus swinging a flail around. It's a prettyshiny ball on the end of a chain; the perfect toy for a man-child.

Bradylama Jul 23, 2008 03:37 AM

Dunno how that happened (I wasn't paying attention) but you weren't reported in any case.

No. Hard Pass. Jul 23, 2008 03:39 AM

Personally, I think Argumentus' perfect weapon is a giant tree limb he calls a club, which he swings around in wide arcs while a tiny puppy he keeps in his cloak pocket (no doubt a familiar, as he now thinks he's a druid) barks at enemies who come to close.

Bradylama Jul 23, 2008 03:40 AM

I think Hill Giants wield "Great Clubs" which are basically uprooted trees.

No. Hard Pass. Jul 23, 2008 03:44 AM

Works for me. I already hear the Friendly Giant (Look up. Look waaaaaaay up.) theme whenever he does anything.

Well, I wouldn't normally min-max like that but without any kind of weapon I wanted to add what little bonuses to his damage that I could.

When Argy's done more than 8 that was probably Brute Strike, which is 3[W], or the table-tossing which is an improvised heavy thrown weapon and bypasses his unarmed strike expression entirely. Critical hits just do max damage in 4E, so that still wouldn't normally take him over 8. There is a passing attack in the rat battle with more damage than I can account for, but it's only 2 points.

All these tables you've been wrecking have table legs attached to them, you know. Hell, just grab a skeleton bone. Improvised weapons are usually d8s :)

Animechanic Jul 23, 2008 03:49 AM

Sweet Jesus, I just looked at Brady's character sheet and he's got 18 Constitution too. I knew you were meaty, but damn.

If you live long enough to level, you should really get the Plate Mail armor proficiency. You are more than qualified, and it will make you that much better to stand behind. Might want to invest in (or loot) a heavy shield too.

Edit: How do you determine improvised weapon damage? The Player handbook just says anything from 1-5 lbs should be a 1d4 and doesn't go into any further detail, at least I haven't found it if it's in there somewhere.

YOU NEED TO KILL THINGS WITH THE LEG OF A DECREPIT THRONE!

Think of it! You have the crown! Swing the leg of a throne. Somewhere along the line we'll find you a fur cape.

Well, it (pg. 219) suggests 1d8 for a two-handed improv weapon, and I'm treating light shields as bucklers* (and therefore not occupying a hand) so I don't know why he wouldn't swing for the fences.

He does gain a +1 to hit from one-handed weapons, though, so it's kind of a tradeoff.

*this is admittedly just a house rule but I think it's a nice way to make light shields seem not-completely-inferior

What if I were to, say, tear the limb off of a felled foe?

No. Hard Pass. Jul 23, 2008 04:09 AM

FUCKNUTS.

There goes my once a day monster hit. Son of a bitch.

The unmovable stubborn Jul 23, 2008 04:11 AM

^Yeah, but at least you get the healing. Nice thing about dailies, they always do something.

It seems to me that clubbing people with a rotting leg wouldn't be significantly more damaging than a punch, what with all the squishy flesh and all (plus, clumsy)

10 out of 10 for style, though.

And yeah, getting some HP back on the big guy was my prime concern. Also, the image of him being all impressed by the dwarf missing with a swing is pretty classic. Like a retard laughing because somebody fell down.

The only really disappointing bit is that my guy is so staged towards defense and healing that he doesn't have a lot of big damaging strikes.

Bradylama Jul 23, 2008 04:25 AM

As long as we're waiting for Kwnwzrd I have more questions!

I could probably use an improvised weapon from the recently destroyed table (I'm assuming), but would I have to be standing in the same square as where the table used to be, or merely in a space adjacent to the debris?

No. Hard Pass. Jul 23, 2008 04:29 AM

I knew there was a reason I smashed that table.
