This week on Virtual Console US (7/30/07):

Drop Off (TG16)
Dynamite Headdy (Genesis)
Star Soldier (NES)

Um...meh.

Wow, meh doesn't even begin to describe the mediocrity of this week's releases...

Sword Familiar Jul 30, 2007 05:59 PM

What are you talking about? Dynamite Headdy is awesome!

Lukage Jul 30, 2007 11:00 PM

I guess we should just only download SNES titles to give them a little bit of a hint.

Also call daily to say that you want a universal friend code (sup console's friend code) and Neo-Geo games.

Sword Familiar Jul 30, 2007 11:20 PM

Neo-Geo games would be awesome, but I think the Wii has too much of a memory problem to be able to handle those for the moment.

SuperSonic Aug 6, 2007 11:06 AM

This week on Virtual Console US (8/6/07)

Adventures of Lolo (NES)
Galaga '90 (TG16)
Wave Race 64 (N64)

Wave Race? Damn. Never did own it, but had fun playing it.

Buizel Aug 6, 2007 12:15 PM

Oh? Is Nintendo back to 1-N64-game-a-month now?

Other than that, I'm broke and not really interested in this week.

FatsDomino Aug 6, 2007 12:30 PM

Yes, because N64 games are just that special. Fuckers.

The Plane Is A Tiger Aug 6, 2007 12:33 PM

I remember having a lot of fun with Waverace 64 back in the day, but that may have only been because it was one of the few N64 games we had for awhile. It's tempting, but I'm short on points and it doesn't seem worth the effort to get more just for Waverace.

DBCE Slayer Aug 6, 2007 01:34 PM

I'm waiting for Duke Nukem 64 and Duke Nukem: Zero Hour. Although I don't see those games coming to the VIrtual Console anytime soon. :(

Lukage Aug 6, 2007 02:58 PM

I find it much more exciting to not look at the new games for a month at a time. That way I can actually be excited and find one good title.

*plays Shining Force*

Chaotic Aug 6, 2007 05:42 PM

Wave Race sounds tempting.

I have almost all the N64 games available minus Super Mario 64... Wave race is just a little too short on action though... You could only do so much with it.

cubed Aug 6, 2007 07:11 PM

Adventure of Lolo !!!!!

What a great game. Well, the third is the best, but it's better than nothing.

Too bad the Wii Shop is under maintenance right now.

Elixir Aug 7, 2007 01:39 AM

I guess I'll post this here since Acer killed the official Wii thread. It looks like there's a new update for the Wii. It was down for over 8 hours today (for me at least).

No idea what it's about, though.

Edit:

From what I've seen the new update adds a digital clock to the main menu, and the Virtual Console is now set out differently. You can now search by "most popular" and by genre.

Channels:
-Digital Clock added to the Wii Menu right under the channel bar
-Forecast Channel now displays the current condition (cloudy, raining, etc.) directly in the Wii Menu in the Forecast Channel box
-News Channel can now show 2 scrolling headlines at a time in the Wii Menu, 3 when you click on the button
-Message Board now has the “Today’s Accomplishments” message as a white message which allows it to stand out from other messages
-Address Book entries can now be shifted around using A+B but only to empty spaces. Not too convenient.
-Calendar in Message Board no longer shows “Today’s Accomplishment” only days as having messages
-Scrolling messages in the Message Board now uses a different sound

Wii Shop Channel Overhauled (Visual aesthetic is the same, changes made to organization and browsing methods mostly)
-New Welcome screen detailing 4 Recommended Titles and the points they cost (gone is the title screen bar that had linkable games). The title bar can be clicked on to bring up a list of 20 recommended games.
-Titles You’ve Downloaded was moved to the main shop menu
-New ways to browse
-Popular Titles (2 pages of 10 and includes launch games so not only based on recent info)
-Newest Additions remains the same
-Search for a title which can use partial names
-Search by Category
-System shows the different systems and how many titles have been released under each
-Publisher showing different publishers and amount of titles released
-Genre (different genres listed and amount of titles under each)

Settings
-Warning added pre-system update detailing that technically modified consoles may cease to function upon being updated. Also the only way to not accept an update is to power down the console by holding the button for 4 seconds (the user can’t back out of hitting I Accept w/o powering down)
Modders beware! (the last line)

The Plane Is A Tiger Aug 10, 2007 05:03 PM

Finally, we have a date for Super Metroid! According to the Wii Shop news for "A Month of Metroid" we're getting Metroid for the NES on the 13th and Super Metroid on the 20th.

Sepharite Aug 10, 2007 05:22 PM

Great. I was looking forward to that I just used my last 500 points on Super Mario 2. What the hell was I thinking? (I'm in major debt so I can't buy anything ._.)

speculative Aug 11, 2007 11:22 AM

I wonder if they would consider releasing Gameboy games? Metriod II was pretty good, along with a ton of other titles of course.

FatsDomino Aug 11, 2007 11:50 AM

I wouldn't mind a remake of Metroid II for the DS or something. There a few GB titles that would be pretty awesome on the Virtual Console. There's always room for them I suppose but I'd want Nintendo to quit with the 3 titles a week, 2 of which usually don't interest me at all routine that they keep dishing out before getting GB games on VC.

chato Aug 13, 2007 11:48 AM

This week's

Cratermaze - TurboGFX
Shining in the Darkness - Sega Genesis
Metroid - NES

I never played the first Metroid so...maybe I should get it? I do have 600 points left.

And. According to them, Super Metroid will be released on the 20th of August. It's under the topc "Month of Metroid". Very Promising. I didn't get to play Super that much either so someone here needs to shed some light on these two games ;p.

If you're looking for difficulty and a classic game, go with Metroid on the NES. I never beat it, never could figure out where to go.

If you're looking for something easier and need a sense of direction, get the remake on GBA called Metroid: Zero Mission.

As far as Super Metroid goes, I've never played it myself. However, I've heard it's one of the best games the SNES had to offer.

As for the other two games that came out this week, no clue about either of them. All I know is Shining in the Darkness is an RPG.

Metroid really isn't that hard. I remember thinking back to the days when I was a kid and had trouble beating the game, then trying the game later on only to find that it was easy enough to beat in one sitting. It's a great game though, I can't recommend it enough if you don't own the original.

chato Aug 20, 2007 12:05 PM

Well fellas, we were given two great gifts

Neutopia : Turbo Grafx16
Super Metroid - SNES
Shinobi 3 Return of the Ninja Master - Genesis

looks like I'll have to throw in 20 bucks for these two titles

wvlfpvp Aug 20, 2007 12:16 PM

Or you could just spend 20 bucks and buy the Sega Genesis Collection and get a bunch of those Virtual Console Genesis games that are already out and stick 'em on your PS2 and play them in progressive.

(and then spend the 10 to get Super Metroid, cuz that shit is tight)
