I know its not exactly Metal but I'm going to say it anyway. So I saw Down on tuesday on their first EVER UK show and I tell you what, it was fucking amazing. So we all know Phil has been though a lot recently but thay redeemed himself that night. He and the band truely were on top form!

I couldn't agree more. That album is fantastic.

And they did so quite successfully! I have to say, I love the new line-up every bit as much as the old one. And the old Angra lives on in Shaman anyway, so everybody wins. I love every song on Temple of Shadows, and Edu is one of my favorite vocalists in metal.

So I got a hold of Ayreon's "The Human Equation" and I'm thinking to myself, "Since when did Arjen become James Labrie?" I looked it up and found out that there are actually a lot of guest vocals on this album. =B I'm a big fan of Labrie's vocals, so this was a pleasant surprise.

I don't like moonsorrow, I dled a few and I just don't like it.

But I am going to look through some of the posts throughout this thread and possibly download more.

No...don't die on me now!

I've heard various songs, but the only Devin Townsend album I have is Synchestra. Which album would you guys recommend purchasing next?

Krelian Jun 8, 2006 11:10 AM

Definitely Terria. It's probably his most industrial effort, and "Earth Day" is my favourite track of his. Also probably the most varied album he's done.

Also, check out Physicist and Infinity. Physicist sounds a bit samey, but it's like... Strapping Young Lad lite. I'd say it's the heaviest thing he's done. Infinity has some of the catchiest songs Devy's ever thrown out - Also pretty varied.

Ocean Machine's also worth a look-in just for Bastard and Life. More melodic stuff there.

I kind of cried when I learned the news of his death. I was actually listening to the end of the Twilight of the Gods album when I read an article about this (looking up any new info on Bathory), so it sunk in a bit harder at that moment.

Hammerheart, Twilight of the Gods and Blood on Ice really played a role for inspiration on a lot of the creative things I've done since I started listening to Bathory.

I just preordered All That Remains' new album and got a package deal with their first CD, a shirt from their album and a poster of This Darkened Heart. I'm stoked.

Oh yes and I recieved a pretty neat Slayer package that I won online. It came with three CD-Rs, two contained live footage and music videos the other had live MP3s of the band, some of horrible quality and other of good quality. Also recieved a tribute double CD album of Slayer, a patch and a decal.

Can anyone recommend me bands that sound like Gamma Ray/Heavenly/Concerto Moon? I'm kinda of back to my heavy metal/power metal phase again. Right now I'm loving Sex Machineguns (Japanese heavy metal). Now if only I could find bands that sounds like them...

Put Balls Jun 18, 2006 06:15 AM

All right guys. Strapping Young Lad's new album, The New Black, with its foreboding name is coming out July 11th.

I've listened to the promo version a couple of times through, and am telling you to wait anxiously for it. From what I can hear, SYL has made quite a turn into a whole unpredictable direction. And then again not. Devin Townsend made it his job to completely diss the horrible bands (that give the word 'metal' a bad rep) like Children of Bodom and such through this one. Not to mention the obvious "nod" to Metallica with the album's name.

So buying this when it comes out. <3

guyinrubbersuit Jun 18, 2006 01:33 PM

What does he do to diss the bands?

Imitate their styles. Like Pablo Francisco.

Schadenfreude Jun 19, 2006 03:56 AM

I don't get how CoB are horrible. Granted, they're not the best band out there (hell, they're probably on the "not-too-good" side) but I don't think they're horrible.

Put Balls Jun 19, 2006 04:07 AM

It's just Townsend. He thinks CoB is a band that tries to be more hardcore than it really is. A poser band, in other words.

I myself don't really hate the band, but have great disinterest towards them.

Krelian Jun 19, 2006 03:27 PM

I don't have the whole album yet, but on the day that I downloaded a few songs - "You Suck" and "Fucker" - I listened to the latter thirtysomething times.

Devin's insane. <3 skullets.

Hah, that's actually pretty ironic...

Nice list of music there, I have been getting into sorts of power metal, and I am listening to heavenly for the first time right now, they're pretty fucking awesome. Need to listen of the rest you have written down...Thanks!

I don't think so, because I don't think Townsend takes anything seriously. It's a pose he does, but an intentionally ironic one.

Doesn't Gamma Ray have a crapload of albums out? Unless you have them all, just get a new one. =P Actually, I should take my own advice...<3 Gamma Ray. Anyway, try something like Wolfcry or Masterplan. Or Angra--their more recent stuff is power metal.

I think that's why it's ironic, anyway, but it would take too long to elaborate, and I don't feel like it, so carry on. :P

Recent haul:

Decoryah - Wisdom Floats
Memento Mori - Rhymes of Lunacy
Killers (France) - Habemus Metal
Mercyful Fate - Time
Morbid Angel - Covenant
Moonspell - Memorial
Varathron - Crowsreign
Persuader - When Eden Burns

And I got a few gifts from a generous friend (don't ask...) which include some Therion merchandise - a mug and a girly-t, to be exact :D and an EP by an obscure Hungarian power metal band called Demonlord, titled "Overture". Good stuff, actually, even though they have one hell of a thick accent.

Krelian Jun 21, 2006 04:08 AM

Therion mug? Hahah, sweet. Does it have album art on it, or what?

There was a record fair in town on saturday; so I picked up the following:

In Flames - Lunar Strain
In Flames - Clayman
Rush - Power Windows vinyl
Rush - A Farewell To Kings vinyl

I don't have an LP deck in my dorm, so it'll be a while before I listen to the Rush stuff. I dunno if the people here consider Rush metal or not, but eh. The two In Flames albums are VERY nice.

Morrigan Jun 21, 2006 10:34 PM

Heh no, it's just the Therion logo and it says "Mexico" on it (the friend who gave it to me is from there). Feels a bit weird to have "Therion in Mexico" merchandise, but hey, it was free.

Power/heavy bands that i know of similar to Gamma Ray etc..

Helloween [Ky Hansen's Old band, btw]
Stratovarius
King Diamond
Dragonforce
Edguy
Thy Majestie

Symphony X (they'r progressive, but the vocal dsitrib. is close to Gammaray)

Nightwish, maybe? heheheh

Oh and if you just like power metal, this will surprise you but :
Children Of Bodom

Yep, they're not Death Metal, they're Power metal. Down to the complex drum-lines.

I'm surprised anyone can doubt COB, their leads alone can easily wipe out any competing band, in terms of musical melody, alone.
