I'm guessing that some of you are fluent or know at least a passable amount of Japanese. Could anyone please translate the dialog that is occuring during and after the beginning tutorial boss fight with Basch and his allies?

Plus the music is rockin' when Basch starts opening up his plasma beam of kickass into the ship.

Spatula Mar 17, 2006 01:30 AM

Fighting games are usually pretty straight forward. You just gotta know which button is to "select' your characters. Usually most formats of the button layouts are somewhat similar. You've got your D-pad or D-stick on the left, and the 2 rows of three buttons are usually for your high-mid-and low attacks. I know a few arcade places in Chinatown here have the imported Japanese arcade console but the locals get used to it pretty quickly.

Shoeless, all I could pick up were the "WHAT?" and something about Basche asking how old the youth was...replying with 17 years of age. Something happened to his mom and dad I presume? Not much help there, sorry.

You guessed wrong - the only japanese person I've seen on gamingforce was japanese, and learning english.

Other then that I haven't seen anybody understand a lick of japanese here. It makes me wonder why people have japanese signatures.

My Hands On impressions so far -

I recently imported a PS2 boxed set that came with FFXII. Let me tell you how freakin awesome it is. I'll get pics of it later. It's a slim PS2 with the logo on the top. It also came with a little carrying type of thing for a PSP.

After all the config, and blah, I started up my game and got a little intro. Talk about giving me the chills. The music, CG, everything was the best I've ever seen in a game.

Starting up a new game, a lot of the CG scene reminded me of Star Wars. The looks, the way it was all orchestrated out, it really felt like I was watching Star Wars Episode I. The first bit is all a sort of tutorial of the fighting sytem. MMO style hard core. I don't mind it at all. (I'm sure many of you have already played the demo). This is by far the best looking game on the PS2. The hair looks very realistic. The skin, textures everything. Voice to mouth was perfect. Though this scares me a little bit when we get the english version of mis-voice sync going on. But, I suppose we're used to this by now with FFX. After, we get right to Vaan and I was able to explore the city. Again, I felt like I was walking through Tatooine with all the sorts of creatures you see and talk to. The map interface is interesting. Dots that point out NPC's in green. Small icons for shops and colored lines for exits or entrances. This was as much as I played in the mean time.

If the battle system was something that was placed in FFXI, it would be by the far the MMO out there. This is a very beautiful game and from just what I've seen so far, this is going to be a very deep story with fantastic visuals, sound and gameplay. I would hype this as a perfect rpg game.

Eh, I wouldn't call it worthwhile, since Square-Enix are just milking it now, along with everyone else. Final Fantasy XII CONTROLLER? What the hell.

What else does the console have, apart from the engraved logo?

Agreed. I'm sure FFXII will be a very good game, but making the console itself engraved with some FF emblem will just seem odd whenever you're putting in other games.

Am I playing FF? NO WAIT! IT'S MGS!

It's pretty much targetting those absolute HARDCORE FF Fanatics who can't get enough of FF. I'm still more than happy with my old fat type PS2, even though it's not modded. >_>.

Elixir Mar 17, 2006 03:39 AM

I keep telling people, you don't need to mod your damn PS2 for it to play japanese games.

Not that you're going to want to take a japanese RPG seriously, of course.

kainlightwind Mar 17, 2006 04:09 AM

I just bought it for importing reasons. I didn't want to mod and fuck up my system.

Elixir Mar 17, 2006 04:19 AM

Modding doesn't fuck up your system, it actually helps it. Provided you don't have a slim which can overheat due to lack of fan, they're fine.

I don't have a modchip but I can still play imported games. I just don't have the money for a modchip otherwise I probably would invest in one, but it really doesn't matter that much. Modding only fucks up your system if there's something wrong with the modchip itself, or if you're still under warranty.

B4-Hunter Mar 17, 2006 05:09 AM

Well my PS2 is moded and as long as I keep in mind to play only on best DVD's like Verbatim and TDK and record them with speed like x2 or MAX x4 everything works just fine. Plus I can run software from memory card, play import games, have PAL converter for signal output inside modchip, green screen fix and other cool things. Besides it's not to expensive 150zł is like 40$.

kainlightwind Mar 17, 2006 05:14 AM

Rather be safe than sorry. Just how I work. Like with my 360, I made sure there was a large amount space for air ventage as with all my other systems. Besides, with two PS2's now, I can launch missles.

Elixir Mar 17, 2006 05:20 AM

Xbox 360's never overheat.

kainlightwind Mar 17, 2006 05:24 AM

According to some, they apparently do. Or least claim so. I know that power box gets pretty damn hot after you've played for so long.

Inhert Mar 17, 2006 05:31 AM

elixir, I'm curious of how you play import game without any chip or jp ps2...because I'm like kain I really dont want to mod my ps2(nor pay someone to mod it)

if it's something that doesn't make me open my ps2 or mod it in anyway, I would really like to know

Elixir Mar 17, 2006 05:35 AM

I suggest you take a look here at their videos. If you have a slimline(lol, I wrote slimeline, it's so true) then I can't help.

Basically, you need to swap discs every time you want to load a japanese game, but it doesn't void your warranty.

kainlightwind Mar 17, 2006 05:38 AM

Ohh, the swap disk trick. It's somewhat of a pain but it's easy to do. I remember the good'ol PS1 days with the first models where you had to put something near the disk to make it run, then put the game in, swap with a real game to get the boot, the swap back to get the game.

Inhert Mar 17, 2006 05:38 AM

well that's exatly what I dont want >.> well I guess the only way i could play import game is to buy a jp ps2...

Elixir Mar 17, 2006 05:41 AM

It doesn't hurt your PS2. All you do is insert the appropriate disc, since there's one for DVD formatted PS2 games and one for CD-R PS2 games which typically have a blue side.

It is quite a pain to swap, but it's far cheaper then buying a modchip and paying somebody to install it.

Inhert Mar 17, 2006 05:44 AM

well just opening the ps2 or forcing it open with a tool, I already call it hurting my ps2 (even if it does damage the ps2...) I just really don,t like that, and I don't want that someday my ps2 broke and I get the sony repair guy said: "well you used a tool to force it open or mod the disk stray so can't help ya" and have to buy a new one (oh well I'll probably have a ps3 by that time >.>)

edit: well i just check a little and I may be interest in this thing. it's look like the safest way to play imported game....

Well, it doesn't damage it exactly, but I'm sure over time it would.

You just have to be careful. A safer way is to get a modchip, but that's only safe if you have somebody install it for you. Tampering around with it yourself isn't the best idea.

Musharraf Mar 17, 2006 06:49 AM

Well I certainly hope that it will work with Swap Magic, otherwise I would have downloaded 4 GB for nothing... will also be tough to even get a little bit of the story, but hey, at least you can be like "hehe I already got FFXII".

Elixir Mar 17, 2006 06:59 AM

Of course it'll work with swap magic.

I wouldn't download it myself - 4 GB on DSL is slow, and it's still a japanese RPG. But I'll still want to pick this up when it's released in November.

Let's keep the spoilers in this thread to a minimum, eh? I don't get hyped over a game very often.

Musharraf Mar 17, 2006 07:25 AM

Okay I just tried it and it works. Well I mainly downloaded it for the AMV scenes and so far, I am happy that I even figured out how to save =D

There are some games that don't work with SM, so I'm not always that optimistic.

Elixir Mar 17, 2006 07:31 AM

Really? I haven't come across any so far.

Hmm, I would of thought that the big guys at Square-Enix would have put some easy protection against stuff like that, but apparently not.
