Ha. As soon as what I read what you wrote Slayer, I went downstairs and started downloading EVERYTHING. I didn't even realize that it was up on the PSN store yet...
|
The Assassin's Creed demonstration was totally kickin' ass. This is going to be a fantastic game!
|
Is the Sony conference still going on? I thought it was finished?
What I really want to hear about right now is more info/footage on FFXIII and any kind of confirmation of a ZOE3 :\... |
Nah, I didn't follow the conference, but I guess most of the videos are already available on gametrailers.com
Some of the trailers are already downloadable in the PSN store, for those of you who're interested. |

While everyone is busy masturbating furiously on the Killzone 2 trailer, I finally realized what felt so off about it.
I realize the code is unfinished, but for a team that doesn't shy away from most smoke and mirrors tricks, how come they can produce graphics and motion blur of this quality http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/a...F/bscap007.jpg yet leave in laughably shoddy 2D flame and explosion effects like these http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/a...bscap002-1.jpg http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/a...F/bscap003.jpg http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/a...F/bscap008.jpg http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/a...F/bscap009.jpg |
I'm pretty sure the reason for the smoke/fire effects looking worse than other games is because it's, supposedly, volumetric. It's harder to make volumetric effects look better than generic 2d animated sprites, but the advantage is that they actually have depth to them and can be viewed from any angle without looking like there's a giant billboard that's always facing you. However, it's also much more taxing than sprites would be as well.
But honestly, I can't really tell if it's actually volumetric from the trailer or not. If they are, then it should be fairly impressive in the game when you're able to walk through smoke without it looking like you're going through layers. |
You pretty much answered your own question. Killzone 2 is a largely unfinished game using an engine built from scratch. Many of those effects look exactly like base placeholder effects for shader code that is not complete yet. The bullet hole effect is a big example of this and that flame effect looks like it is nothing more than the base polygon structure without any of the shaders applied to it yet.
The trailer also doesn't seem to have a particle engine in it yet either. Again these types of final shader effects and particle engines are traditionally added during the first few polishing rounds. I'd be surprised if this trailer was running on anything higher than an alpha level graphics engine at this point. |

Even if it is, nothing can be certain as to what is going to be in the final build and what isn't. So just enjoy the good features of the trailer, and wait for a final build before taking anything for what it is.
|
So how does that work with people wetting themselves and announcing it game of the year like the last time with the CGI trailer?
|
All it has to be is the game that makes the largest impact at the event. There's no other rules other then that.
So am I getting this right. That Epic said that Unreal Tournament 3 will be on PS3 and PC but NOT 360? That's what IGN has up on their news. UPDATE Killzone 2 gameplay video: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/21600.html *Audio is messed, but itès still interesting. Man, I have NEVER seen a game that looked this good. MGS4 may look better in some areas, but KZ2 is only in ALPHA, not even close to BETA. They took that CG trailer, and beat it to fuck with a dead 360. EPIC UPDATE Alright here we go, straight from the EPIC mouth. "At their E3 2007 press conference today, Sony confirmed that Epic's Unreal Tournament 3 will be a timed exclusive for the PlayStation 3, coming out this year only for the Sony console -- guess they didn't have to buy it. Also confirmed (and very exciting) is the ability to share mods between the PS3 and PC versions. When the PC version comes out next year, at least." |
I don't get the whole " OMG killzone 2 ". it looked awesome for the first two minutes, then afterwards it just got really boring and the graphics were great, but nothing groundbreaking. The missile effects also look horrendous.
Also It is cool the PS3 gets UT3 as a timed exclusive, sadly it is most likely only a 2-3 month exclusive deal and i'm sure the 360 version will have things the PS3 won't like connectivity/online play with windows users. |
At least this came up like a surprise (predicted but still a pleasant surprise)
http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3161061 Silent Hill 5 at last, woo. |
Actually it won't have 360 VS PC play because EPIC is NOT in support of Microsoft's Iron Grip within the Games for Windows LIVE service because the service does NOT allow modifications or mutators which makes up 80% of the UT community. Also can't forget all the schools that use the UT tools for teaching/learning tools. Which has made EPIC pissed at MS for the time being.
Also I'm sure they're trying to figure out how to get the 30Gig game on a DVD to play on the 360. As for the Killzone 2 "wow" factor. It managed to stay with me throughout the majority of the video. The smoke from the rocket looked awesome to me. Also the rifle and the iron-sight alone looked amazing with the depth of field and all. Also nice to see the addition of gore effects, which looked killer. Only things that need work are the fire and some smaller effects. However this is the best Alpha build of a game that I have ever seen. Like for a BETA it would still be very good, but for an ALPHA, shit... it's still has a long ways to go, therefore it will look noticeble beter even by BETA. P.S. SH5 = can't be worse then 4, and hopefully better then 3. |

Also, Epic never said they were against Windows for live. They basically said they were disappointed with the way microsoft has handled it so far, but are still adamant to support it as long as they allow it to evolve into something that PC and 360 gamers expect it to be and have come to know from past UT experiences. If EPIC were truley pissed off and hated microsoft like you stated, then why is such hot property like Gears of war, 360 exclusive in regards to consoles? It makes no sense of them to do that if they hate microsoft like you're claiming they do. Lets not forget that the Unreal Engine 3 which UT3 utilizes was written and designed specifically for DirectX 9/10 PCs. EPIC have already stated it is harder to develop for the Unreal engine 3 on the PS3 then it is on the 360 and PC because of this. |
“Taking all of these things that everybody has come to expect for free and now yanking them back and trying to sell them isn’t going to fly with the Windows platform—not with Epic and not with the big publishers," -Mark Rein
Sure as hell doesn't sound like they're happy with the service either. However all of this is beside the point that EPIC is NOT using the PC LIVE service and that PC & 360 players will not be able to play against one another. This is all I was really trying to get accross in the beginning. (however I am aware that I did get a bit sidetracked after the fact) |

The PS3 version of UT3 is 4 months away and the 360 version is 6-7 months away which in terms of development changes and tweaks, that is ALOT of time. |
We'll see, but EPIC wouldn't give up their reputaion and what sells the game, which is the community content. And by going with Windows LIVE they'd be doing just that.
Secondly they're not supporting Windows LIVE with Gears of War and seeing how the game and the UE3 each are setup for LIVE archetecture and Windows LIVE back end it would have been simple to have included the support seeing how everything was right there. Also no one expected Gears for the PC to have a huge modding support however EPIC chose not to go that route. Though you could also argue that they didn't have PC vs 360 support in the game, I don't think that it would have been much that a patch couldn't have fixed, but I don't know UE3 enough to say anything concrete. As for the VF5 thing, I dought I would have based whether VF5 would have online or not based off my knoledge of the industry rather then the fact that online fighters don't work well, and the fact that VF5 is very timing based and not combo that lag would affect it more then something like DOA4. However I would have said right after when they announced that they were basing the 360 version off of VF5 Version C with 360 exclusive hoar clothing for female characters that they were tailoring the game to sell in the NA market and NOT to be a solid fighting game overall and therefore would have had a higher possibility of online play. However when I made the comment you are reffering to this was not the case and AM2 had only said that they were porting the PS3 game to the 360 and nothing more, therefore implying that they were sticking to their age old customs, which did not turn out to be the case. |

Luckily, this conference was a flashback to the glory days of Sony and it seems they've finally shedded their " holier-then-thou" attitude that has been their undoing the past year and have reverted back to their old kickass self. Sadly, though the PS3 has the rest of 07 lost to Microsoft and Nintendo. Hopefully though they are planning alot of great stuff for 08, as that is the time frame that is really gonna make or break the PS3. Admittingly, i prefer my 360, but i don't want the PS3 to fail at all as i forked over 600 bucks for one and i don't want it to be a waste of my money. At least Heavenly Sword comes out soon which IMO was the best game presented at the conference. It looks fantastic. |

-Angel Rings -Eight days -EyeDentify -Fifth Phantom Saga -Final Fantasy XIII -Final Fantasy Versus XIII -Folks Soul -Formula One -Full Auto 2: Battlelines -Genji: Days of the Blade -God of War 3 -Gradius -Grand Turismo 5 -Haze -Heavenly Sword -Hot Shots Golf 5 -Infamous -Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier -Killzone 2 -Lair -Little Big Planet -Metal Gear Solid 4 -Mobile Suit Gundam: Gundam World -Monster Hunter 3 -Motor Storm -My Singstar -Ninja Gaiden Sigma -Ni-Oh -Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction -Redwood Falls -Resistance: Rise of Man -Ridge Racer 7 -Shin Megami Tensei -Socom 4 -Tekken 6 -The Eye of Judgment -The Getaway -Uncharted: Drake's Fortune -Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom -WarDevil Enigma -Warhawk -White Knight Story -Wipeout That's funny because I count about 15-20 if these exclusive "blockbusters", guess your list is out of date. UPDATE I agree with Iwata that Sony's not going to gain any ground this year. A few big titles like Lair and HS to keep early adopters happy and then the game machiene will be running long and hard starting early next year when MS and Nintendo won't have many heavy hitters left. |
I think Mush was referring to games that ya know are going to be released soon and aren't a year or two away from even seeing the light of day. Alot can change within a year or twos time regarding exclusive rights and what not. Also, lets do a little nitpicking.
-Full Auto 2: Battlelines - Genji: Days of the Blade - Hot Shots Golf 5 - Ridge Racer 7 -Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom Not one of those games could be classified as blockbuster hits. Plus, nice job interjecting games like " God of War 3" and "Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier" that haven't even been annouced yet. I mean if wanted to i could come up with a list of 360 exclusives that is twice as big as that list as speculation is always a " vital " tool at gauging the truth. |
Ah... got ya.
The window he was working in wasn't very clear. But yeah... I'm going to bed now... EDIT None of thoes were included in my 15 - 20 count though. That was just my PS3 exclusive list. |
