Is there a way to play DivX .avi files on my PS3 over the network feature? I think I've heard of other people doing this, but they wern't using the WMP media service to cennect their PC to their PS3. So what program do I need and how do I set this up?
|
Nero MediaHome and TwonkyMedia are popular DLNA server software.
|
Wow. I was literally just going to ask about this. That is fucking creepy.
So with these DLNA servers, should I theoretically be able to stream ALL of my music, videos and pictures to my PS3 downstairs? Do I just set up the DLNA software on my PC, and then search for it on my PS3? I really need to get this thing working. |
So.. watching .avi files on your PS3 through streaming should be possible?
What exactly does DLNA server require (physically) to work, will a WLAN do or does it need some other wireless add-on? |

And I severely doubt they'll be including divx support, ever, because of whatever licensing crap made them leave it out of PSP and PS3 in the first place. |
your PS3 just has to be hooked up to the same router, whether it be wired or wireless as the PC you want to stream from. Unfortunately, unless you know how to do port forwarding and what not, router hopping can be complicated, so just keep the two things on one router.
as for the .avi thing, you should be able to watch them as long as they're not DivX encoded like most are nowadays. However with some research and a reference to a previous post for instructions, it seems that Nero MediaHome is the best way to accomplish this. While there could be other programs, a lot of the services out there (ie. Windows Media Player) don't have decoders for their server service, where MediaHome does have these decoders. So if you have Nero Ultra, just follow the following instructions (which were also posted earlier) and you should be able to watch almost any format on your PS3. http://reviews.cnet.com/playstation-...-31880501.html P.S. I've heard that lossless WMA files also don't work on the PS3 with most services. This program could also possibly fix that issue too. |
Isn't it possible to connect the PS3 directly to the computer without using any router?

I've been playing a lot of Calling All Cars recently (Awesome game. Get it). Whenever I log on to do some online multiplayer, it only shows about 9 or so people playing. Does it only show people that are around my area with the best possible connections, or is there really only 9 people playing this fucking game across all of America.

That's mostly because if you want to network and keep your internet connection, or unless you have two network cards, you need a router.

Ok im thinking of my impending PS3 purchase, and Id like some opinions on whether now is a good enough time to buy it or should I wait for some upgrade that may come in the near future (like this year). Im thinking rumble controllers and other such things i hear are in the future.

It's pretty much like that: If you primarily want a gaming console, it's not the right time yet because besides two or three games, the game lineup is pretty much a disaster, that's why I don't have a PS3 game yet either. But if you want a nice Blu-Ray player and a DVD-player with extremely good upscaling, this might be interesting for you (needless to say, you gonna need a good TV for that). The upscaling of PSX/PS2 games isn't that spectacular, but you can see a difference, at least I did. |
Oh god I am confused. I don’t mean to take this thread off track or anything, but I was just wondering if somebody could help me out.
So I understand that Windows Media Player 11 can work as a DLNA server. I set everything up on my computer (which is wired to the router), but couldn’t detect my PS3 (which is wireless to the router) from my computer. I went down to my PS3, and was surprised that it had found the server that my computer was running, but it still would not allow me to access any of my music files. So, I took out my laptop, which also has a wireless connection, and set the exact same thing up on there, and it worked flawlessly. Basically, my wireless laptop can stream media to my wireless PS3, but my wired PC cannot stream media to my wireless PS3. Everything is going through the same router. Is there a common problem when going from wired to wireless, or something? Is there a simple setting that I don’t know of that probably needs to be checked? Any help would be awesome. |
So you can get;
Laptop --> Router --> PS3 to work, but not PC --> Router --> PS3 Well unless you didn't allow the PS3 on your WMP 11 on your PC but you did on the laptop, that would do it. Pretty much anything else wouldn't have even let you detect it, not a "cannot access" error. Can anyone else think of what might be the problem? |
On my PC, when I go into the sharing settings in Windows Media Player, I can't even find the PS3 to enable it. However, on my laptop I can find the PS3 just fine.
I'm just confused because when I search for Media Servers on the PS3, it finds the server on my PC, but won't let me access anything from it (I assume it's because I never enabled sharing to the PS3 from my PC, but I can't enable sharing as my PC can't detect my PS3 :(). CONFUSING. |
Hmmm... the only thing that I can think of right now is that perhaps you can only have one connection per a server program established with your PS3. Therefore;
Computer A <---> PS3 (Because you allowed it) Computer B <--- PS3 (It can see it, but you currently have it set up to work with Computer A) This would make sense to me. Only thing is if you tried Computer B first (Desktop) then there was no existing link between A and the PS3 for the PS3 not to link to B. Make sense? lol Anyhow that's probably not the case, but there's not enough information on this feature right now to know for sure. The only other things that I can think of that may be the issue is if you have a firewall on your desktop that's interrupting incoming inqueries from the PS3. OR under; Media Sharing -> Settings -> "Allow new devices..." checked UPDATE: Alright, I did some looking around and I found some good possible fix walkthroughs. This may take you a bit to go through all of it (if need be) but it's a lot stuff that seem like possible fixes. Good luck. http://boardsus.playstation.com/play...essage?board.i d=ps3media&thread.id=44464 http://boardsus.playstation.com/play...essage?board.i d=ps3media&thread.id=47608 UPDATE UPDATE: Found a quote in another walkthrough which sounds like what I was saying earlier; "If you don't see the device, the chances are that a)you have a firewall blocking WMP11 media sharing b) there is some port conflicts between ps3 and your home network. Disable firewall to check if its a), or restart your PS3 (or disable and enable back media sharing in XMB under Network Settings). After each reboot PS3 will use different set of ports for media sharing, so eventually you should be able to get PC and PS3 see each other. The same also applies to a similar problem with other software." http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=158357 CURRENT STATUS: Alright I installed the new version of TVersity 0.9.10.3b which does not require the TVersity PS3 patch. After installing this, selecting PlayStation 3 as the end user and selecting the files I want to share the program crunchs the data, creating a database. After this it is hosted on the network for all PCs, Consoles, Laptops and everything else to see. Unlike WMP 11, there is no validification required to establish a connection. You just can't have TVersity's out-port blocked by a firewall and pretty much anything should be able to access this. TVersity in conjunction with ffdshow also allows you to ciew almost any common filetype on your PS3. Including Xvid. |
I think I'm ready to pull the trigger on one of these after seeing the upscaling firsthand. I wanted to check with something though. Anyone happen to know if the newest firmware resolved the emulation issues with Ar Tonelico?

Well, I'm making progress. I went into the settings and checked that "Allow new devices and components automatically" setting, and my PS3 can now access my PC, but for some reason it still won't display any of the songs that are in my library. It just says "no tracks", but at least it now doesn't give me the permission denied error. It's a step forward, nonetheless. When I went back upstairs to check my computer, I could now detect the PS3 from my PC as well. Weird.
I think I might just try and work with this TVersity, since it sounds way more versatile with the files that can be streamed to your PS3. I'm going to try and set that up later. Hopefully it'll go better than WMP11... |
Well for your WMP11 issue, are you sharing the correct files that has you media in them?
As for TVersity, it's a good program, but if you try to share too much on the server then the program begins to bog down and what not. My solution has been to use TVersity for videos and WMP11 for music and pictures. |
Ok. I finally got everything working. All of my music is on a different partition, so I initially just dragged and dropped the entire folder into the WMP11 library, assuming that would then relay everything to my PS3, but apparently you have to actually go into the library settings and manually set which specific folders you want WMP11 to monitor. After I set it to monitor the designated partition with all of my music, everything worked like a charm. Pictures work, too. Too bad Winamp doesn't have a feature like this, as that's what I use to manage all of my music. Thanks for all of your help.
Now on to the videos... |
I'm already looking forward to October when they gonna launch that awesome "Home" network. I heard it's possible to listen to your friends' pirated MP3s and watch their moviez before they can be seen in the theatres. This is going to be astounding, I wonder what the RIAA will say about that.
|
There will be DRM restrictions in place, trust me on that. Sony is out to make money with Home at some point in the future, they won't just ruin everything beforehand.
