There's already been quite a lot of talk and photo-taking about this latest update. Go here to see some screenshots of this in action. SOTC looks a good deal better, as does FFXII. For the lazy: Spoiler:

G.A.P. is Gamer Advisory Panel, which is like a "VIP" group of play underground members that have access to more and exclusives content. When you log in on the playstation website you should see the GAP icon under your name, click on it and you'll be in the gap section.
and yes I got the same e-mail no beta for home and no beta for warhawk for me :( |
Hey guys, I don't think I gonna read all the posts in this thread (lol), but I have a question: Is it true that some (or maybe all?) PS2 games run in HD resolution after the latest update?

That upscaling feature is pretty sweet, and really the only way I could ever hope to reasonably play all my PSX games on HDTV (eventually you won't even be able to buy an SDTV, just like CRT computer monitors are hard to find). This makes eventually getting a PS3 a more attractive proposition.
|
Yeah, from what I have read on other message boards, the upscaling feature must be pretty awesome. Now I just hope that Sony's going to improve backwards compatibility for us Europeans :)
Grandia in HD, how cool is that. |
This update was almost pointless. The PS1 games did need the upscaling to make them look decent on newer TVs. However as far as the PS2 games go, most TVs already have screen ratio and zooming abilities, so the stretch feature isn't even needed, and the 1080p stuff hasn't been much of an improvement. I would have been way more excited if they had added 16:9 formatting.
|
Well it's not like things are worse after this update.

Nope not needed. No improvement at all: http://media.gameworldnetwork.com/ne...669b525e4b.jpg |
I never said that there was No improvement, I just said that there wasn't anything that huge for all the hype this was getting before release. Sure the 1080 image looks great, but when you're sitting 5 feet or more from the screen, it's not that huge seeing how PS2 games will never look all that great compared to current games anyway. I'm just saying that I would have rather had the 16:9 rendering more then the 1080p capability. I'm not saying that my opinion is in everyone's best interest, cause it's not. It's simply what I would've wanted.

Hmmm... I thought as much. The reason why I thought it could be done thouh is because all the supported X-box1 games are upscaled and formatted to 16:9 on the X360. However while just going through my games I remembered that there were games that didn't have 720P support (Phantom Dust) and when I put it in the X360 it came up in 1080 but in 4:3. So I kind of stumbled upon this before your last post there. However someone else out there may have been wondering the same thing that I was earlier, so at the least we have this documented now.

That's basically what I said in my last post there. Games that already supported 16:9 played in that ratio where games that did not (which wern't many, like Phantom Dust) only play in 4:3 even on the 360.
|
Well, yeah, but there ARE games that support 16:9 on PS2, so I don't know where you're going with this.
|
After my second last post I wasn't going anywhere with it and had come to a conclusion, lol, oh well. Don't worry about it Jazz I get it now. Thanks for the continued effort to explain it though ^^
UPDATE: Just some things that I wanted to name off here that I don't think have been mentioned about the PS3's V1.80 update. First is that you can now stream music, video, and pictures as long as you have a DLNA compliant piece of software. RYU has pointed out one method of achieving this, another way is by adding the PS3 to your Windows MediaPlayer 11 Media Sharing list. Next thing is that BR-DVDs are now downscaled to 720P/720i/480p, basically whatever your display setting is set at instead of the old 1080p/i OR 480i ONLY option. And lastly, one that I've been waiting for is that you can now use your PS2 memory cards to transfer data not only off, but now TO the cards. Meaning that we now have a use for them again to keep backups of our saves, or to transport our saves to our friends places and use them on their PS2 with our CURRENT files. No more having to carry my PS3 around to play my PS2 games just so that I have access to my saves. YAY!!! |
Argh, I wanted to wait until fall when all the good games were supposed to be availabe (and of course I was hoping for a price drop), but now the possibility to watch all my DVDs in HD is making things much more complicated =/
Has anyone made experience with the DVD upscaling so far? I'm talking about movies, not PSX/PS2 games. |
Does the new PS3's upscaling doohickey upscale to 1080i, or just 720p and 1080p?
My display doesn't do 1080p ;_; but games (assuming they'r nextgen) look really beautiful at 1080i so I don't think I'm missing much. |
First impressions:

Did you buy a PS3 already?

edit: Elixir, the announcement said that the PS3 could upscale UP TO 1080p, which means that 1080i and 720p should be included as well, I guess. |
for the backward compability I heard that the 1.80 firmware did a pretty good job to erase some bug, now all metal gear games pass without any bug, FFX and FFX-2 now only have problem in the cg scene (the video read a little slower then they should) but apparently there's no more any bug in game. That's what my friend said.
I think it shouldn't take that long before those problem disappear. |
There is much improvement as far as DVDs are concerned, some as far as PS2 games are concerned (depending on the game, I can't see any difference with FFX but Burnout: Revenge looks awesome, for instance) and PSX games like Grandia don't exactly run in "high definition" mode now but it's pretty nice. There is not a single PS2 game (well I don't have much, but sttill) which makes problems, which is pretty cool, too.
My screen can't display 1080p, but 1080i looks pretty good! |
