This is definitely Skills's special move. I've yet to play a game of L4D with him where he hasn't set me on fire at least once during a game.

So I just got a >16 minute gold record in survival with a team of three plus bot in the sewers. Only one of us had played it before.

If I understood correctly, we played local host, and the game lagged like all hell, with jerky movement, which at the same time made hitting a distant moving target hard, but also essentially worked as a bullet-time making you far faster in reactions. Not to mention two tanks managed to get stuck in the ceiling by climbing a pipe and then not being able to get down. It was a lot of fun, but I feel like I won a 100m running competition against someone I'd knocked over.

Hopefully they fix.. something.. so people don't start pulling off 30 minute records by exploiting something like this.

Or maybe 16 minutes is not that good and I misunderstood.

The unmovable stubborn Apr 28, 2009 01:58 AM

Yeah, Tanks are buggy as hell in Survival for some reason. Pointlessly climbing to the highest point and then climbing down again, hopping the same fence in both directions 40 times, standing in a windowframe and just spinning in place. I can only guess they didn't update the pathfinding for the adjusted level geometry and that's why we're seeing such irrational behavior.

16:00 is pretty goddamn good unless you're a deliberately exploiting goontard. I've seen scores of over an hour from people who know precisely how to cheap everything out.

map car man words telling me to do things Apr 28, 2009 02:10 AM

We pretty much defended two of the corners and skimping on healing, occasionally making dashes for ammo when the opportunity arose. I just felt we were getting off far too easy because of the lag (as in, it wasn't the usual lag of an enemy popping up in a new place but everything moved very jerkily, essentially doubling your speed) and worried everyone else will just exploit the hell out of something like that.

Yup. It's retarded.

Since there was a leaderboard addition on the 360 (uncertain if the PC version has this for survival times), it's become a contest to see just how long you can cheat until your xbox overheats and freezes on you.

Some of them have 10 hours as the top time.

The unmovable stubborn Apr 28, 2009 02:25 AM

Yeah, the PC leaderboards apparently haven't appeared yet and judging from the idiocy that ladders always cause in any game I kind of hope they never do. The last thing I want in a pick-up game is to be ordered around by a bunch of aspie clanners trying to "improve their rank".

Misogynyst Gynecologist Apr 28, 2009 07:36 AM

I like the fact everyone was all "Remember when we were in the alleyway and the Tank took everyone out with the dumpster?" and then it happened *again*?

Also, that we left Tails on the roof to die and he didn't say anything the whole time; he just logged off.

Tails Apr 28, 2009 07:54 AM

JUST AS PLANNED. Sorry about that last round folks, it was late, I was tired, and by then everyone in the place was asleep so I had to watch the noise level. I wanted it to be over so I could go the hell to sleep, sorry if anyone thought I ragequit.

Fun times last night all around. We all were pretty much huge failures except for Daravon although there were some good moments in there.

Kudos to Mo0 for killing all of us as the tank that one round, though I don't think it beats my point blank Incredible Hulk rock smash. One of these days I'll figure out what the fuck is going on, I promise.

Well, since Steam has no sort of user rating system a la XBL's stars, if that were the case you could just fuck with them by throwing molotovs at the team/wasting pipe bombs/just shooting them in the face.

Also fun is using the corner glitch on Last Stand to instantly kill yourself.

Learning the tank is so goddamn stressful, because everyone wants you to kick ass as the tank and no amount of I HAVE NEVER USED HIM BEFORE shuts up your team.

The biggest thing I've learned is to run around and try to find something that glows red. Your best ammunition is things you can throw at people using right trigger. I've never managed to hit anyone with a rock, but I killed all four of you with a car.

We can never hope to stack up against someone with the strength of four men. :(

Tank play is simple:

1. Never throw rocks. Ever.
2. Go for the survivor who is not green.
3. Once you incap someone, move onto the next.

That's really all there is to it. Environmental things are situational like ledges to punch people off or cars to punch at people.

PFFFF yeah right. I think I will stick to ROCK THROWIN after I hit someone in the face directly last night.

Taco Apr 28, 2009 01:06 PM

I dunno how fast people move about on the 360 version, but picking up a rock as a tank on the PC version is an invitation for everyone to run up and unload all of their ammo into you.

Twice.

it's also frustrating when all the survivors are in green health C'MON TEAM WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING ;_;

The unmovable stubborn Apr 28, 2009 01:35 PM

Rocks have a niche; they could certainly be more useful but they definitely have their place. You will never deal as much damage with rocks as you theoretically can deal with punches, but laying down suppressive fire in the right place can massively increase a tank's lifespawn in wide open battlefields.

Doing 30 or 40 damage over the course of a couple minutes (and it's not hard to buy this much time if you can find a chokepoint to block) beats the hell out of doing no damage over the course of 10 seconds because you're on fire and 99% of your flesh has been replaced with buckshot.

Grail Apr 28, 2009 04:36 PM

Throwing rocks tends to come in mighty useful on the rooftop of the hospital when the AI decides to spawn your ass right in front of the mini-gun. Taking cover behind something while arcing rocks through the air at the survivors that refuse to run away from the little encampment where the mini-gun is does wonders.

Ever since this DLC hit I've hated being the tank. It doesn't matter if my ping is sitting at thirty, and same with everyone else, the fucking arm tends to pass right through them 90% of the time. It's annoying as all hell and I don't think I'm the only one having a problem with it.

That was hilarious. It was really weird though; I guess because you were standing right next to them, when you threw the rock it looked like you just held on to it and slammed it down on her head.

I also liked that time I was the smoker and managed to pull you all the way down the stairs back into the safe room on NM 5, and your team didn't notice until they reached the elevator shaft :tpg:

Hey, if anyone wants a spot filled with maximum gay, you can do the end of Death Toll from the deep part of the water. It's similar to what people do on Dead Air with their backs against empty space, except the infected can't get behind them, and hunters can't pounce in the deep water (though if you're good you can try to pounce from ontop of the house straight onto them for 25 damage).

Even better is everyone climbing ontop of the rock near the water to the far right of the map. Three people watch the land, a fourth person watches the water for Smokers with an automatic rifle. Infected can't get up there and very, very rarely do Tanks think about climbing up there.

RacinReaver Apr 30, 2009 12:31 PM

Yeah, I've done that for the Campaign mode, but I imagine it wouldn't work as well in versus. Then again, if you get four people with autoshotties up there, some decent teamwork, and people that know how to use pistols and I could see that spot being pretty solid. Sadly it seems the only maps I'm seeing in versus right now are Dead Air and No Mercy. Dead Air is pretty fun, though there's just so many rooftops to either pull off of or jump off of it can be some pretty great rape.

As far as that spot working, the rock, if the entire team of survivors do have auto shotties, then as the tank, I would think you could stand back at that little house that's north-west of the contact point and literally chuck rocks from afar and not worry about taking any damage at all. That is if you weren't hit by a moly.

As far as Death Toll goes, I was really, really looking forward to playing this in versus constantly due to it being my favorite map on campaign. Unfortunately, due to several invisible walls and cheap camping spots for survivors, its my most hated map for versus as it stands. I've not had the opportunity to play much of Dead Air, but all in all, that seems to the more enjoyable of the two.

RacinReaver Apr 30, 2009 03:53 PM

Oh, and to let anyone know that doesn't currently, if you get set on fire as the tank you can run into the water to put it out. Last time I controlled the tank on the last stage of Death Toll I used that trick twice to let me finish the survivors off.

SailorDaravon Apr 30, 2009 11:06 PM

In case anyone hadn't noticed, the game has a free 24-hour demo up until sometime late Friday on Steam. Since we now have a PC (laptop actually) that can play games for the first time ever, I checked it out and everything runs good (medium to maxed settings), and the game is on sale this weekend for $24 on Steam, so I'll probably double-dip on PC. I'll have to doublecheck my Steam name, I can't remember if it's sailordaravon or mrdaravon.

As an aside, I discovered a nice little pull 2 nights ago on Dead Air 2, and I was able to fairly easily replicate it tonight again. It APPEARS to be a slight glitch, but I'm not sure, looking around online and posting it I couldn't find anyone else mention it.

On Dead Air 2 as the infected, at the start of the match the smoker can get up on the roof to the right, then jump up a ledge into the room with the window that is directly above where the Survivors come out. Stand as far out as you can on the ledge, and you'll see the fire escape on the left. Wait for the survivors to jump the fence and climb up the fire escape, and pull the last one as he's going up the ladder. If you pull a survivor there, it pulls them straight across to you, with NO vertical drop, over the fence on your side. As far as I can tell since you're barely on the ledge, the tongue is dragging across the windowsills between you and the fire escape maybe? It's worked easily both times, and since the Survivors can't get back across the fence, you can easily coordinate a distraction or teaming up on that guy and kill him.

I was also made aware of a more elaborate stats page, mine can be seen here. 100% accuracy with the assault rifle surprises me.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor May 1, 2009 01:31 AM

That's because it's wrong.

Stats seem to only half work, lots of people are reporting errors.

Some people have stats like 20k zombies killed while having earned the Genocidest achievement, for example.

You also didn't manage to somehow hit 19 of 20 shots on infected with the L1 shotgun and not manage to kill a god damn thing, so.
