There's the IGN review, if anyone really cares.

Wow, that was a pretty hilarious review. It makes me wonder if we even played the same game.

I have to strongly disagree with some points of the review as well:

Quote:

With so many titles under the same label, certain issues invariably pop up. Non-fans, for instance, can't tell the difference between Ace Combat 4 and Ace Combat 5. From a visual standpoint, even fans may have a hard time distinguishing between the two.
No difference between 4 and 5? OK, I consider myself a "fan", but come on. Especially if you're a fan, you will notice the visual difference.

Quote:

This addition comes as a blessing and a curse. On the upside, it's downright exciting squaring off against a band of killers. These aces show up when you least expect it, and usually it makes you damn nervous. Which brings up the negative. Since they're so hard to defeat, it really sucks blasting through a lengthy, complicated mission only to die at the hand of an ace. Sure, there's nothing wrong with a little challenge, but when you're forced to replay a 30-minute mission a few times, you'll crave a checkpoint system or some other kind of assistance. Oh, and as improved as AI is in Zero, both on the allied and enemy fronts, your teammates just don't cut it against aces. In most circumstances they wind up feeling useless.
Anybody who has to replay a mission a few times because they get shot down in the end should seriously consider playing on easy difficulty or actually acquire some skill. I have never had much trouble with this in the AC series besides the final missions. And there has to be some challenge. If you choose your plane and weaponry wisely, taking down an ace squad is a matter of minutes.

The statement about the lacking AI is also ridiculous. AC Zero had, for the first time ever in the series, an excellent AI system with top-notch adversaries and a wingman that would actually make a difference. Hell, I've seen Pixy take down an ace or two. He was far from being useless.

Since this is one of the aspects that made AC Zero truely unique among its predecessors, I don't understand how they can criticize it so much. It's extra hilarous because they specifically praise the AI in their closing statement:

Quote:

Plus, the addition of a rewarding multiplayer mode, not to mention improvements in AI and mission variety, make it a worthy successor.
I don't think mission variety has improved much, since it was always pretty diverse in the AC games.

Thank god video game journalists are such professionals.

Zeal Apr 22, 2006 06:21 PM

I only give them credit for pointing out the believability of the game. Above all, this is what makes the series most appealing.

Jay Fox R.W.S. Apr 23, 2006 05:47 AM

Just out of curiosity, has anyone here legally bought Ace Combat Zero yet?

Elixir Apr 23, 2006 06:20 AM

Yeah, I have.

Ramenbetsu Apr 23, 2006 01:28 PM

I would love you if you could scan the cover so i could replace the NA version =)

Is this too small or what.

Ramenbetsu Apr 23, 2006 01:54 PM

thanks megalith, I *think* it would work.

It seems they've withdrawn this review. I mean, the page is still there, but they removed the link on this page.

The review is still up... they just haven't updated the game page yet.

Jay Fox R.W.S. Apr 24, 2006 10:48 AM

Nope. I could have sworn the link to the review was listed there three or four days ago.

Skwerl Apr 24, 2006 03:48 PM

My thought on IGN review.

Gamestop called about my preorder. It arrives tomorrow, I can't wait! I'm sure everyone here has downloaded and beaten it already, but I'm going to single handedly save Namco by actually PURCHASING a copy! Because of me Namco will have enough money to make AC6 for PS3.

::Mobius One is a hero::

Despite tomorrow being my usual day off/sleep 'till 3pm day, I'm going to wake up ASAP and beat this thing before my 6pm class.

EDIT: Make that TODAY. It arrives TODAY.

Double Post:
Just got it, unfortunately I have class right now. I have the X-02 unlocked, presumably because I have an AC04 save file on the same memory card. Does anyone know if it's possible to earn enough money to buy it before finishing the game if I play on Mercenary?

Downloading like idiot.

Shampoo Suicide Apr 26, 2006 09:55 PM

God dammit, the US cover art has the ugly Namco Bandai logo.

tenjouten Apr 26, 2006 10:15 PM

*sigh* I wish I could listen to the voices in japanese.....

Mobius One Apr 26, 2006 11:13 PM

LOL, I'm loving these biographies on the aces you shoot down. F-15 pilot "Ibis" goes on to help develop Stonehenge!

Well, after playing ten missions so far, I must say this game is FUN. It seems namco brought the best elements from AC 4 and AC 5 and put them together in this game. Now I see these reviews and what not saying how it's 'exactly the same' as the other games. Well...that's a half truth to me. Yes, it uses AC 5's graphic engine [and by the looks of it, they touched up a bit on it, because the plane models look more detailed, as does the scenery], but I dont think it should be looked as a game that SHOULD be totally different. It's a game that's for the fans in my opinion. People who loved AC5's story will probably love this game, because it is such a story driven game that creates the events in 5 with Osea and Yuktobania. That's where Namco I believe were aiming this game at, but that doesn't mean people new to AC can't enjoy this game. It's kinda like Star Wars I guess in the way that the prequels came after the originals.

Overall I'm really impressed with the game, and i'm trying hard not to beat the game in one day, but...I dont know if I can't. Lol, at least the replayability is amazing in this game.

My one con to this game is of course...it's packaging. It's nice and kinda crappy at the same time. If you look closely at the back it uses the picture of the radar screen that is in the beginning of AC 5...which has nothing to do with this game's story at all [seeing SAND ISD. and CAPE LANDERS is kinda dumb to me].

Mobius One Apr 27, 2006 12:15 AM

Yeah, I see that AC5 radar screen with low opacity in the background. I think it's there to allude to the fact that this war really leads into AC5's war. I love the packaging personally, the art of the two F-15s is great! I REALLY hate the "Bandai Namco" logo though. Why Bandai, why?

I'm on Merlon right now. Damn excalibur got me the first time through, the freakin' dot spawned right on top of me! The AI has really improved. Story aside though, this game is pretty standard AC fare (not that that's a bad thing). I did enjoy Bastion's sense of vertigo, that's certainly new.

Karasu Apr 27, 2006 12:21 AM

Yea, this AI is a bastard....The Aces were ALL over me. And yea, Excalibur got me too, hahaha. The Laser got that tanker and I moved outta the way, but the second it came, I was too low to the ground, and didn't have enough speed. Sure enough, it zapped me, and I crashed :(.

Oh and that Ace profile thing is very very nifty. I find it funny that one of the Aces of the war is now a car salesman. I feel so bad for that guy. I'd much rather be up in the sky than selling minivans, lmao.

Mobius One Apr 27, 2006 01:11 AM

LOL, just like that U.S. Airforce commercial (or was it Navy?) where the narrator goes "and to think, somewhere some poor fool is buying a minivan..." and then it goes on to show all the excitement of the military.

I just came. 5 times. In a row.

Rei no Otaku Apr 27, 2006 12:14 PM

Does anyone have any tips on dodging that laser the first mission it appears in? It appears right in front of me, and by the time I turn the plane it's already expanded to fill the entire radar screen. Is there a certain speed I should be at? Does it expand more at lower altitudes?

Edit: Nevermind, I figured it out^^'

Megalith Apr 27, 2006 03:23 PM

Why don't y'all just play on easy difficulty.
