I like how the FMV's suffered even more due to the exclusive widescreen TV bonus, and everyone had weird super crushed heads. There'd be a dramatic Yuna scene, but it was comedy, because her head was so crushed! "Tidus, I'm scared, my brain's being forced out of my ears". |
I like how PS3 is now region-free.
So like, I'll be playing ZUPR KAWAII~ puzzles when IT COMES OUT! But really, region-free sounds good. Real good. |
Yeah, now I can play all those budget Mahjong games I've been missing. Oh wait, I don't know how to play! :tpg:

Region Free would be the greatest thing to happen to PS3. Now I don't care if it costs even $900 (yes I do)

ok, people have only been waiting for this to become standard for like 20 years now.
"Hey why doesn't Super Metroid fit in my SNES?!" "You have to buy a converter for imported games to work." "*mad* ...well ok." "Hey! why doesn't Super Mario RPG work even if I use my converter?!" "Oh, you have to buy another type of converter for that game to work" "*WHAT THE...!*" So it's about damn time. Hopefully this will become the standard for consoles now. And now all Sony has to do is to force developers to add widescreen options as well as, for versions released in PAL territories, 60hz options and they'll atleast have (what should be basic obviousness') covered. I don't understand how even highly anticipated titles like FFXII can still lack widescreen options. How hard can it be to add that, really. |
The only question now is if developers will go out of their way to include multiple languages and subtitles for anyone who will import. I don't expect this practice to occur in, say, Pachinko Dreams Kawaii Densetsu 2007.
That aside, I doubt it would become a standard. What would stop people from importing FFXIII if it has english text? It could hurt US sales from those who refuse to wait. This COULD mean more games that will hit both Japan and the US simultaneously, but I doubt it. |
This is awsome that the PS3 is now region free. Although the main reason I think behind Sony doing it was so they could crack down on modchips. They were ruled legal in Australia due to the region locks. This is great for all those who do buy imports, but bad for the rest, though I don't see Sony doing anything with the main problem which is in China, since well....what do they care.
And I don't see publishers going out to release games with translations on them just because of this, especially in the Japanese market. A few would import from that market but that number is extremely minor. The greatest effect this would have is probably the European market, where games are usually delayed forever due to translations of 5+ languages, but now people who understand English can import from the US. |
Of course they wouldn't. They could literally make twice the cash without changing a thing.
I mean, look at FFXII. 90% of you nerds would buy both the Jap and US versions. Don't lie. It's also cool how no game on PS3 will run at 1080p. |
The whole 1080p possibilities with the PS3 was brought to light when Kikizo had thier hands on exclusive a month back I believe. As for region free, now the icing on the cake would be if Hollywood agrees to region free as well. I'm tired of having poorly done R3 - R1 discs. :cussing:

T1249NTSCJ: There is no way Hollywood would give up the control these region locks have given them. |
I wonder if Gamestop will add an import section in their stores? It would be nice, as long as
A) they don't charge extra for the games (10-20$ more). B) there aren't too many retards who can't comprehend it ("I bought this game for my son, and it's in japanese!") |
Since importing isn't mainstream, and it'll be something exclusive to the PS2, don't count on it Soldier. The store I work at is huge, and we wouldn't even have any room for a PS3 import section.
Come to think of it, I wonder what's going to happen when we add the two new sections....:( I'm happy about this region-free stuff though. Now I can import Namco x Capcom if it came out in Europe and Rogue Galaxy if it doesn't come to the States. |

Ahh, I really like this region free thing. As for translations/re-releases, well they wouldn't necessarily have to re-release games. Instead they could probably make the importers pay a fee to download a patch, on to the HDD, that'll switch/add in english translation. Probably cheaper for both sides. |

Only the PS3 games will be region free, DVD's will be region locked. |
Blu-Ray discs, as well, will be region locked. This isn't retroactive, but on the bright side, Japan and the U.S. are in the same region according to the Blu-Ray specs floating around.
|
I thought Europe was also included in the same region? I was under the impression that, for the most part, PAL and NTSC were combined into Region 1.
Poor India was, however, left out. :( At least to my knowledge. |
You've mixed up Blu-Ray and DVD region codes. Blu-Ray region 1 is USA and Japan, DVD region 2 is Europe and Japan.
|
What? Japane's in two regions?
Also, this was never confirmed, does region free games mean that import PS1 & PS2 games will work as well? Or is it just for PS3 games? |
The PS3 hardware itself, is region-free. Publishers can still region-code their games to prevent them from playing on machines in other areas, but that'll be due to their software solution and not the machine itself.
This is not retroactive, so PS1/PS2 games are still region locked. |

So they are going to put region reading hardware in the PS3. Most likely, only games that will be released in the US will get any region coding. Why would some obscure Japanese dev care about his game going to the US? |
