I think the voice acting for everyone was outfuckingstanding. It lived up to the hype even with the delays.

Square Enix Legal Action Over Illegal Uploading
Square Enix released an PDF today, talking about the regulation of illegal uploading of Advent Children online. With the release of the English version of Advent Children in the UK (24th April) and the US (25th April), S-E will be tightening regulation of infringement of their intellectual properties, such as illegal copying of their games, music, videos, images, and so on.

In October of last year, a complete video file of the Japanese version of Advent Children was uploaded onto Google Video. After getting the file removed from the site, S-E continued their investigation and identified the person responsible. The infringer eventually admitted to it, and as well as issuing an apology agreed to pay the compensation, so on 17th April they reached a settlement.
Wait....NOW they decide to do something about it? Now, after 6 months later?

Please change you management, Square.

AC1 Apr 22, 2006 12:48 PM

After EIGHT months, SOLDIER (September-April).

And they are fucking retarded lol.

SouthJag Apr 22, 2006 06:06 PM

But take it from their perspective -- do they delay the English version even LONGER so they can settle a virtually neverending pursuit, or handle it later when they've got some breathing room.

Newbie1234 Apr 22, 2006 06:55 PM

So the dubbing ain't that good, well I honestly don't remember the last movie that had good dubbing. It's probably because I'm not a huge FF fan, but I'm just fine with sticking with the subtitles.

Soldier Apr 23, 2006 07:49 PM

Wait until you actually see the movie before you cast judgment on the dub. Based on what I heard from KH2, I'm confident in the voice acting. Even Suvari isn't so bad after some later lines.

Anyway, it seems Best Buy and Circuit City are receiving the movie this Tuesday, a day before Gamestop. I'm considering purchasing the movie in one of those stores while cancelling my reservation at Gamestop. Not only would I get the movie earlier, but at least ten dollars cheaper too. The problem is I wouldn't be getting the exclusive third disc Gamestop offers.

So my question is if that bonus disc is even worth it. If all it contains is short interviews with the main actors, not saying anything we haven't already heard from the LA screening or anywhere else, then it certainly isn't worth the extra day and cash.

SouthJag Apr 23, 2006 07:57 PM

Well I'll tell ya this Soldier -- S-E street-dated Advent Children for the 25th. We're getting a day early too, but we still can't sell it.

And neither can Best Buy, lest they get in deep shit.

Motsy Apr 23, 2006 08:02 PM

GameStop should already have the movie -- they've probably had it for a week, and will sell it on Tuesday.

SouthJag Apr 23, 2006 09:07 PM

Nah, we haven't gotten it yet. No worries.

Freddy Krueger Apr 23, 2006 09:16 PM

From what I have heard from previews most voices are good, of course not ALL of them can be but I like Cloud's, Kadaj's, and Tifa's havent heard any others yet.

So are you saying Gamestop will ship the movie on Tuesday and not Wednesday?

If that's so, is the price still the same? I'm still not sure if it's worth forking over 10$ just for a short third disc.

SouthJag Apr 23, 2006 09:55 PM

From what I've heard, you can buy the bonus disc separately. It's still $24.99 standard.

Piff, just pull the old buy and return move on them. It's not like they're gonna ask you to return the pre-order bonus.

I watched the dub yesterday, thanks to the magic of teh intarwebs. Honestly, most of the main character voices were decent. Some better than others, some exceptionally good, one or two exceptionally bad, but generally hovering around "okay." No replacement for subtitles, IMO, but not ear-bleedingly bad by any means. It's mostly the unsynched lip movements that are distracting. As well as a few exceptionally dumb lines that are more the writers' faults than the VAs'. Tifa's VA was actually good, but even she couldn't make the "dilly dally" line sound not-stupid.

Don't see why everyone is ragging on Aeris' VA, though. She's a tad passive-sounding, but I didn't think she was all that bad. Vincent's VA bugged me far, far more than Aeris' did.

Am I the only one who laughed out loud when I listened to "The Promised Land" opening to the movie? "Jenova fell from the sky a looooong, loooooooooong time ago" ROFL.

For my store, they might. They mentioned before how they were enforcing a stricter policy regarding pre-order bonuses, refusing to hand them over until the customer purchases the game. I believe they also mentioned once that if you wanted to return a game, you had to bring back the pre-order bonus as well.

Also, I'm pretty sure they don't accept returns on movies, unopened or not. I'm just going to check with my Gamestop first tommorow. If they have it, I'll just buy it from them. If not, I'll stop by Best Buy on the way back from College and cancel my GS reserve.

Either way, it looks like the movie is finally on its way tommorow. With that, it's about time I ranted a bit. In my journal.

If you do read that rant, here's the short counter-argument; despite the repeated delays, I'm still excited for this movie. Even if Square failed in the american execution, the concept was still one of their greatest ideas, accomplishing three things I've always wanted to see them do. A continuation of FFVII, A true sequel to an FF game (that was taken seriously, unlike FFX-2), and another attempt at the film industry. People can debate it until they turn blue in the face, but I stand by what I said many times before; FFVII needed a continuation. The ending was one of the most unsatisfying I have ever seen for a story of its caliber. It didn't matter to me whether it was a new game, movie, or even novel (Case of Tifa would've sufficed on its own. Go read it), it just had to happen.

1 day left.

Hantei Apr 25, 2006 04:32 PM

Just got my copy! But, bah! Stupid EB didn't get any pre-order bonuses. Well, for those who got it (the bonus disc for pre-ordering), what exactly was the supposed 1.5 hours of bonus footage?

No, they should have delayed it and re-dubbed it with just a HINT of emotion.

Im no expert on dubs, by any means, but the complete lack of emotion in every character's english voice was "sickening". Im not complainingabout the character's voices mind you... (there were no Tidus-like annoyances) but even Tidus pretended to emote once in a while (as whiny and retarded as he sounded)

Freelance Apr 25, 2006 09:10 PM

I got my copy today at Sam the Record Man. All you Canadians should get it from the actual stores instead of online, as it's only 24.99 as opposed to 26.99.

Unfortunately, I started watching it a little bit late, and I have an early work shift, so I have to stop it. I hate having to stop a movie midway through it. I don't know if it's just me, but watching it on DVD is making me appreciate it more than when I first saw it back when the Japanese version was out.

I didn't watch the dub, and I don't intend to. It's not because I hate dubs, however. There's several dubbed anime I like. It's only because I love Morikubo Shoutarou's voice XD He voices Kadaj and Shikamaru from Naruto.

Freddy Krueger Apr 25, 2006 10:23 PM

Wow I watched the english one now and I loved the english voices. Plus me and my friend thought the sync wasn't bad at all I don't see what people were complaining about, maybe a unfinished version?

Soldier Apr 25, 2006 10:46 PM

I watched it.

My thoughts?

That about says it.

Okay, I suppose I have ONE question.

Spoiler:
So....since when was Tseng uh...NOT dead?

Spoiler:
I think the smile is actually the most important climax of the movie, emotionally speaking. Although that particular shot doesn't say a lot about how you feel about this. So what do you think? Are you surprised? Do you think it is good, or is bad? Is it worth the wait?

Since always. It was a mistranslation in the English version regarding his condition.

His "death" was a mis-translation. Or so I hear. Someone else can probably tell you for sure.

Soldier Apr 25, 2006 11:06 PM

Spoiler:
"Mouth agape" would be the proper description. I feel drained, if anything else. I enjoyed it, no question, but after 8 months of waiting, I feel sort of empty. Anyone who called this a proper resolution to FFVII is wrong. If anything, it felt like an extended trailer for the compilation. Rufus and the Turks are still around, Sephiroth pretty much hinted that he'll come back again. And then there's all the questions I have; why did Kadaj have all the kids gather at the lake where Aerith died, and why did drinking the water corrupt them? Does the ring on Tifa's finger mean her and Cloud are married?

I guess if I had to summarize it in words, it would be "more please".

That's news to me. I guess that would explain why
Spoiler:
Elena wasn't pissed enough at Cloud for thinking he "offed her boss".

Speaking of translations, while I scoff at the laziness of Sony not dubbing the Reminiscence of FFVII feature (I know it's only 5 or so lines, but still), it was pretty neat looking at a proper translation of the original game's dialogue, especially the rhyme Aerith had regarding the Cetra.
