So I got it today. Awesome.

I'll keep you posted but as it goes, it looks fucking brilliant.

As for how the VAs pronounce the names, well, I thought that the recording directors or whoever supervises the recording sessions would catch these small errors, but I guess not.
Or maybe there's so much dialogue, they can't keep track of it all. I remember the dub of the original MGS, where Meryl prounounces Otacon as "Oh-tacon". ><

Embarrasingly, I used to pronounce Tifa as "Tai-fa" when I was in high school. I soon worked in "Teefa", since everyone else was using it. It's pretty common knowledge, but regardless, they better get it right in the game.

Same for Sephiroth, though I don't really see any other way they could pronounce it.

As crappy as the voice acting was to begin with, it was especially hilarious when this one boss character literally stumbles as he tries to prounouce his own name.

Not necessarily, although it is still the responsibility of whoever is in charge of recording to make sure everything is being pronunciated correctly whether it means the actors are informed of how to pronounce the names before the recording, or after if something doesn't seem right.

Maybe they themselves had conflicts over pronouncing some names and just went with a majority decision (even if sometimes other ways of saying the name are used during the game)?

I just got this game earlier, I must say the opening has a different feel than in the japanese version that i played.

I havent played that much since but yeah VA's are good, i still prefer my japanese VAs though

Ah, good to know that he came back to reprise his role. I've been wondering for the longest time too, cause Squall has been getting little attention.

Haha, the funny thing is that Meryl was probably the only one that pronounced Otacon correctly.

I have/had similar trouble with Yuffie, Rinoa, and Quistis's. Yuffie was always Yuff-fee for me, when in reality it's Yuufee (only recently adjusted, thanks to AC).

Then Rinoa always pronounced as Rai-no-ah when it should be (according to katakana) Ree-no-ah. Haha, and as for Quistis, never really seemed to figure out how to say it probably, probably will forever remain a mystery to me.

Shenlon Mar 29, 2006 08:50 PM

I got the game this morning but I started to play it just a few hours ago. I stoped near the end point of the introduction to the story. Game is great, since I heard that the game is easy I started off in proud mode and so far its been a pretty smooth ride. Although I didn't think CoM would be that important to play so I'm kinda lost in that part of the plot ^^.
So far I'm loving it but I'm more used to the japanese version of passion. As for IGN giving it a 7, yeah its not a fair a score in my opinion. All this time I thought ign was more leniant than gamespot but I guess its only for fighting games.

I say Rinoa as "Ri (like rim)-noah(like the dude with the arc)"

Quistis I say as "Qwis (like Quiznos) tess".

JazzFlight Mar 29, 2006 09:06 PM

Heh, talk about the longest introduction I've ever played before. Took me over 3 hours before it got to the title screen.

It's kinda sad, I wanted to keep playing as Roxas, I didn't want to go back to Sora. I liked Roxas as a character more.

I'll really have to play CoM fully, I'm missing on quite a bit of story (then again, that adds some mystery to the story, since the characters themselves don't remember the events of that game).

Shenlon Mar 29, 2006 09:09 PM

yeah but story plots from CoM are sort of explained from flashes but it would be nice to get the rom and play it just to see what happened. I would have done that sooner myself if I knew that it was going to be that important.

Motsy Mar 29, 2006 09:13 PM

Played up to the Mulan world. Really digging the game so far; a HUGE improvement over KH1.

That intro really dragged on, though.

That was one of my favorite moments in videogame history.

Spoiler:
I don't know what he says in the English version, but when Roxas says, "Sora, I'm so jealous, my summer vacation is over." and then the title screen faded in, I almost started screaming with delight. It was just such an amazing moment to me. The way he delivered the line was perfect, the music was beautiful and everything you had played so far had led to that moment.

Do yourself a favor and do it. You are missing out on a TON of stuff if you haven't played it.

DON'T read this next spoiler unless you have finished both Chain of Memories and Kingdom Hearts 2!!

Spoiler:
Every Organization XIII member that you really killed in COM is really killed in Kingdom Hearts. In other words, Marluxia, the woman (Lexeus/Lexeon something like that), and anybody else that was killed by Riku or Sora is really killed. They do not show up in part 2 except during some flashback looking things.

It's actually not him; it's Doug Erholtz, a.k.a. Doug Berholtz. There's a complete cast listing on the KHII Wiki article, which reveals--to my amusement--that Seifer is voiced by Will Friedle. (Christy Carlson Romano, for some reason, is not Yuffie. It's Mae Whitman. I had a hunch it wasn't Christy...)

I say "Rinoa" as "ree-no-ah" and "Quistis" as "quiss-tiss."

EDIT: Motsy beat me to it.

Shenlon Mar 29, 2006 10:15 PM

I actually found the CoM rom so I'm playing that as well as much as I can. Now I understand the intro to KH2 a little bit more ^_^

blisteredhands Mar 29, 2006 10:27 PM

I have to agree with the intro being absolutely awesome. Although.. I have to admit...

Spoiler:
I wanted so badly to get to Sora while I was Roxas, but as I continued to play as Roxas, after I was no longer him, I wanted to be him once more. I thought the part where Sora cries when he leaves Twilight Town was kinda sad. I hope Roxas and Sora's stories continue to unfold in the game. I just now made it to Hollow Bastion...

and I plan on picking it back up tomorrow after class!

Also, as far as CoM, I tried to play it, but I couldn't get into the battle system, so I just picked up the script, and wiki'd names to get pictures. Still had the same effect honestly.

Might want to spoiler tag that. I avoided looking at the cast list on the manual, afraid they might list some character names I wouldn't want to know about yet (like the hooded characters who are still kept secret).

Not necessarily true. Most of Sora's story from CoM is insignificant since he forgets it all anyway. Riku's, on the other hand, gives tons of hints about DiZ and the other members, so I recommend playing through that one at least.

Aw, damn, you serious? That was the one thing I gave Boreaniz credit for (I'm no Buffy/Angel fan). Granted this other guy seems to do a better job, but still...

Ha ha, oh man, it's true. Terry from Batman Beyond plays Seifer. Awesome.

But wasn't Romano confirmed to play Yuffie in AC? So why isn't she in KH2 (unless she gets only a handful of lines)?

Crap like this pisses me off. I'm a stickler for consistency, so it always bugs me when there's a VA change during sequels. I can learn to accpet the new VA for Squall, but why change Yuffie, especially if she's going to be in AC? I'm not going to comment on Suvari either.

I just hope the Disney worlds are just as long.

Kairi Li Mar 29, 2006 11:18 PM

I bet most of the directors are Disney employed, though I do know there's usually a SE supervisor during recording sessions, maybe Selphie and other more minor characters didnt have them cause its gonna be a short session?

They probably should have had a list telling them the correct way to pronounced each name IMO.

I recommend reading the COM script off gamefaqs for both Sora and Riku's before playing KH2. I mean, as the audience, I don't wanna end up like Sora when he goes "huh" at every 5 mins in the last world cause we both forgot what happened in COM.

There are less cutscenes in Disney worlds, so it will feel shorter. But most worlds have 2 episodes.

rpgcrazied Mar 29, 2006 11:21 PM

man, this game is addicting.. i played for almost 11hours :P

I'm tempted to try and e-mail Christy and inquire why she's in AC but not KHII. It bugs me, especially since I envision hearing Christy's voice come out of Yuffie's mouth above anyone else's.

Soldier Mar 29, 2006 11:30 PM

If she's the type to actually care about e-mails and respond to them, then go for it.

rpgcrazied Mar 29, 2006 11:31 PM

how far is everyone?

Spoiler:
just did the collisieum, disney castle next. people that have played the import, you do visit each world twice right?

Soldier Mar 29, 2006 11:33 PM

I'm still in Twilight Town. I'm going to take my time with this one, and let the story sink in.

How many days total are in TT? Spoiler mark it if you wish.

rpgcrazied Mar 29, 2006 11:35 PM

Spoiler:
it is 6 days

This bothered me too, I just hope somewhere along the line Whitman won't end up replacing Romano for Yuffie in AC or something. But I suppose that would be better than Whitman doing Yuffie for KH2 and then Romano doing Yuffie in AC, even though Romano could probably do the part better.

LS Mar 30, 2006 12:29 AM

Yes you have to visit some world twice, but some are required to at least visit 3/4 times.
