I just wanted to leave a quick message to let any friends know that my system met an untimely demise, so I'm piecing together a new one. With any luck, I can find the components I want locally without paying a huge premium, so that I can be back in time for the first round of the Best Song Contest.

Australia
I'm going to be taking a vacation at the end of January, travelling to Cairns in northern Queensland, Australia. It looks like a pretty interesting place -- a tropical paradise actually, with a nearby rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. Strangely enough, I'll be there for Australia day as well.

Of course, the highlight of the trip is going to be the world's first meeting between 3 former GFF Administrators - me, OSS, and Dogmatix Man. There may be a few other GFF members there (hopefully foxy can make it.)

I'll get to Cairns on January 23, and leave early on January 30. Unfortunately, since it's an immense country, it's not really feasible for me to visit anywhere else (sorry Decoy Goat ).

Doctor Who
For fans in the US, the new season of Doctor Who premiers on the Sci-Fi channel this Friday (Sept 29) at 8 PM. David Tennant takes over as the 10th Doctor. I've been enjoying the newly produced shows even though, in certain ways, they are quite a departure from the original series. Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing this.

Dead Drive & GenCon
So, it finally happened to me. I lost a drive this weekend. It was working fine one moment, and then suddenly, transfers started hanging. Even scandisk was taking forever. As it stands right now, any program that accesses the disc, locks up until I turn the drive off.

The drive is only 6 months old, too. A brand new 400 GB, on which I was storing all of my anime soundtracks. They are all backed up on DVDr, but it would take ages to pull 4500 soundtracks off all those dvds. So, I've been thinking about this, and I've decided that I'm done with collecting anime music. Unlike game music, I don't even listen to it, unless it's from a show or movie that I watched and liked. It's probably better this way, for my sanity's sake.

Also, I need to reconsider my archiving strategy, because this could happen to my game music Hard Drives as well. The only safe solution is to backup regularly to a spare set of Drives that I keep offline.

Somehow, I missed my opportunity to update, even though Endless Sorrow kept reminding me, so this entry is dedicated to her.

Last weekend, I went to the Video Games Live concert in Indianapolis, which was held in conjunction with Gen-Con. So I drove down there on Saturday morning, planning to hang out at the convention, and meet up with a few people, and then see the concert in the evening.

The Concert The concert was awesome. I could write plenty about it, and in fact, I already have right here.

Gen-Con Wow, a day badge was $45. It was only about $15 the last time I went. I didn't have that strong a draw to go, since I'm not that into gaming nowadays; it was mostly something to do, and it worked as a convenient place to meet up with a few friends. The whole venue was jam-packed with people, and I mostly spent my time in the dealer's room, aside from attending a seminar put on by a friend.

Totally by luck, I ran into the guy who bought my Magic the Gathering collection a few years back. He had it all with him, and pulled out my old binders to show me what he's picked up. He had added some nice misprints to the sizable collection that I had put together back in the day. It brought back a lot of memories, and even elicited a faint pang of regret in me. But, I really didn't have the time or passion for it...

Some of you probably remember Chaos Angel Sox, who posted here for a while and who was a friend of Aeristerra's. I got to meet her and her friends for dinner at Bucca de Beppo's before we all headed to the concert. We had fun, though I think they are all into gaming and anime much more than I am, so there were plenty of times I had no idea what they were talking about. Unfortunately, Aeris wasn't able to make it. ;_;

Oh yeah, there was a fair amount of cosplay there. Just walking around, I saw:

- Lots of Star Wars characters - Stormtroopers, Boba Fetts
- A neat full-size remote control R2D2 unit. The best was when it was sitting at the bottom of a staircase outside the RCA dome, with no one around, it look like it wanted to go up the stairs.
- I saw 3 Princess Leias, in Jabba's Slave Barge costumes. The first woman was way too overweight to be dressed like that. I saw her walking one way while I was waiting for Sydney, and everyone who came the other way for the next 2 minutes was talking about her "Man, Princess Leia really let herself go."
- Cobra Commander and one of the female cobra agents
- Commander Will Riker
- Lost of medieval stuff, knights, maidens, barbarians
- Not much vampire stuff. Maybe that fad is finally over (or they were all in their coffins.)
- oh yeah, Pirates were everywhere.......
- I only saw 2 furries. One was a guy standing in line in front of me at the fast food Japanese place. He just had a long wolf's tail. There was also some other guy with a goofy looking blue tail and ears. Plenty of catgirls too.
- A team of 4 Real Ghostbusters
- A box of Pocky
- Lots of anime characters, of course, mostly unrecognizable to me. There were some nice Inu Yasha characters though.
- Somehow, I missed seeing the giant Pikachu, but everyone was telling me about it.
- a couple people with uniforms from the old show 'V'
- Jesus Christ, complete with crown of thorns
- And the biggest laugh for me -- someone was dressed as a Cardinal (the catholic kind), complete with crimson robe, and was walking around holding a chalice in both hands, blessing people.

Maybe I'll dress up for something like this, someday.

For those Sci-Fi nuts, both the original and new Starbuck from the 2 Battlestar Galactica series were at the convention. It was kind of cool, getting to see them from about 10 feet away. The woman who played the Blue-skinned girl from Farscape was also there, as was Kevin Sorbeau (Hercules).

After the concert, Socks, ldycatlin and I all went back to Gencon, and saw a movie called Gamers 2: Dorkness Rising, which was everything the D&D movie should have been. It was hiliarious, though watching it in a room full of gamers at 1 AM was probably the perfect venue.

Heading out...
..to Cleveland for the weekend. It's my nephew's birthday, and he's getting a PS2. Of course, when you have a PS2, you need games, so I got him:

Star Wars Legos: he loves Star Wars and Legos, so it's a winner.
Some Spongebob Game: I can't remember which one, and it's already wrapped up.

I'm looking forward to seeing the Star Wars one, since I've heard it's actaully a great game. Luckilly, it was also rated E.

I'll be back Monday; see you all then.

An Update
As promised, time for an update.....

Tomorrow, I'm heading to Pittsburgh for a long weekend. On Saturday, I'll be going to my High School reunion (class of '86). It's going to be fun catching up with some of my old friends, and seeing what they've been doing with their lives. I found out from a few internet searches that, among those who were my closest friends, Rich is a director at AT&T, Steve is a partner in a San Fransicso law firm, and Mark is an actor on such shows as Charmed and CSI. Aside from the reunion, I'll get to visit some family while I'm there, too.

A couple of weeks ago, I applied for an opening at NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. I wasn't sure about my chances, as it looked like it was a public announcement for a position they had already filled (i.e. hiring a contractor into a full time civil service position), and after talking with a friend who also works with that group, that turned out to be true. As expected, I got a rejection notification this week. It was a diasspointment, but perhaps the important thing is that it marks the point where I'm finally starting to look for a new job. My current job is interesting most of the time, and I have learned a lot here, but for the last few years, my career has definitely been in a rut, and I'm lagging my peers when it comes to level of responsibility (and likewise, lagging in pay.) When I get back from this trip, I'll need to start looking in earnest.

With all of this in mind, last week I went out to Men's Warehouse and spent $500 on dress clothes, which is something I've needed to do for a long time. I picked up a couple of nice sports coats, some formal and not-so-formal dress pants, shirts, and a nice tie. Heh, my old suit is 17 years old, and doesn't really fit me any more. I expected I'd buy a new suit, but no one really wears those much anymore.

Anyway, I hope you all have a fun weekend. Back on Tuesday.
