The legacy of Project mew
Hello!

It's been a while I last made a journal entry. A lot has happened since then - what you will find in this post required years of work so to speak.

The last two entries focused on Studio e.go! and I became fond of the idea to cover the game music of certain companies.
So today's topic is Project-μ, a relatively small eroge company that existed from 2000 till 2004. Their in house game music composer was Chihiro Arisaka, a person I have never heard of before and who's most likely not the Capcom composer of the same name.

Now all this info about Project-μ doesn't really deserve any attention (at least not over here) if not for Chihiro Arisaka, who quickly became one of my favorite composers. I discovered her work a few months after Project-μ's final game came out, which contained a soundtrack sampler CD called Project-μ Best 35. This sampler contained 35 surprisingly good to awesome BGM tracks.
And it was maybe a few months later I decided to hunt down every game they released and extract the complete BGM, transcribe all original tracknames from the sound menus within the games and start a complete Project-μ music archive. A few years later, I'm done with it.

Now what can you expect from Chihiro Arisaka's music? Well, it's not your typical visual novel music, like what you hear in To Heart or Kanon. It's more the typical oldschool RPG music you know from the days of SNES and early days of PSX, just with better synth. While most composers nowadays compose bland and generic music, Chihiro Arisaka's compositions deliver a nostalgic feeling that I wish could be experienced in other games. To add authority to my opinion, all of the game rips are provided with samples for your listening pleasure.

So here are the complete game rips + Project-μ Best 35, the CD that started it all:

Project-μ's First Game
Kitamakura Hakase no Yuuutsu

Japanese tracklist for reference and corrections
Spoiler:
06 YOU ARE MY SECRET
11 DREAM DRINKER
12 OH!

Rip Notes:
As it says, their first game. The music was in midi format which is attached in the rip. Big thanks to Rimo who back in the day converted these midis with his great sound card so I could supply an mp3 rip. For the debut game I chose to sample the opening theme as I think it gives a great overview of Chihiro Arisaka's various styles.

Project-μ's Second Game
Wasure Na Gusa (忘れな草)

Japanese tracklist for reference and corrections
Spoiler:
(Short)

Rip Notes:
Their second game was actually the last I had to prepare. It was a lot of work transcribing the tracklist and I'm not really satisfied with the translations. Nevertheless, this contains some of my favorites. The music sounds kind of mysterious and the traditional vocal song is relatively popular it seems.

Project-μ's Third Game
Kanojo no Nagaukoto. Boku no Omoukoto.

Japanese tracklist for reference and corrections
Spoiler:
01 Falling Fruits~

Rip Notes:
It's their only game with a redbook audio, so don't be surprised about the tracknumbers. Of course the audio quality is slightly better and the music is as great as the rest.

Project-μ's Fourth Game
Hotosenaru Uta Chitosenaru Shirushi (ほとせなる呪 ちとせなる詛)

Japanese tracklist for reference and corrections

06 BGM05
07 BGM06
08 BGM07

11 BGM10
12 BGM11
13 BGM12
14 BGM13
15 BGM14
16 BGM15
17 BGM16

Rip Notes:
The game with the most complicated name was also a bit of a letdown for me. Maybe it's cause the tracks weren't even named but this music feels disappointingly different. Not all of it, though, so I chose to sample one of the better songs. This was also the last game I ripped, a bit difficult to get.

Project-μ's Fifth Game
Gin no Hebi, Kuro no Tsuki

13 Relaxation
14 Labyrinth~
(Loop Version)

Rip Notes:
This was Project-μ's last game and came with a Best Of cd with 35 tracks. Unfortunately the CD contained no music of the last game itself. Gin no Hebi Kuro no Tsuki is in my opinion the most impressive game of the studio and the music is almost epic. If you haven't found out by now, all of the game rips contained some fast paced music that sounds like battle themes - here you get my favorite one:

So much for the game rips, here's the Best Of CD. The music quality is slightly better of course (it's CD Audio), but there's no new music. Also, there's no picture.

Rip Notes:
Take note that every tracklist you will find on the internet of this CD is wrong. The order is mixed up, the tracknames are mixed up, it's a total desaster. I put together this tracklist with the help of the sound menus from the games and it's as official as you can get without a proper scan.

Wait there's more..
Project-μ had sister brands, Laksmi and Meta-Doll. They were even less successful than their parent company though - they released a game each in 2004. Most of it was generic and uninteresting music but a journal entry wouldn't be complete without the last mp3 Chihiro Arisaka has ever composed:

Be warned though, Goth is really bad.
Still, Chihiro Arisaka's music takes up a major part of my game music library and I'm glad all the music and info is now up for future references.

Seven-Bridge
~~
Until a couple of months ago I thought that 2005 was a weak year for Elements Garden. They released tons of CDs, like a new game soundtrack every month, but all of it sounded dull and uninspired.
I always knew that Noriyasu Agematsu, Junpei Fujita and Hitoshi Fujima can do more than just OP/ED themes to countless games/animes (at least beginning with Angel Core where I discovered Agematsu's music first).
Well, now I know where all their effort that year went into. And ironically, it's probably the only game that didn't get a seperate soundtrack CD:

SEVEN-BRIDGE is Liarsoft's 13th masterpiece. I like to call them the Studio Ghibli of H-Games, although I've played none of their works seriously to this day. My current signature/avatar is their newest work Sekien no Inganock, by the way. Innovative stories, beautiful artwork, memorable music.
Music-wise, SEVEN-BRIDGE was a change of course. Neither Factory Noise&AG nor NoBrandSounds took care of the music (you might know those people from Tecnosoft or the recent Thunderforce arrange albums). It was all Elements-Garden this time, with the ED taken care of by Blueberry&Yogurt and Rita as the vocalist.
What came out of this collaboration were 85 (!) great tracks, enough to fill a nice 4 disc set, put some of the beautiful artwork on it and sell it in stores. Unfortunately, Liarsoft didn't. Also, Elements Garden decided not to give the tracks any meaningful titles (BGM No_xx).
Still, thanks to Winny and a random anonymous person, the game rip has surfaced.

Long story short, SEVEN-BRIDGE is getting nowhere near the love it deserves. I want to change that by giving more samples than usual.
