one month to go...
I've spent the past couple of weekends running food tests to see if we can actually do up some of these dishes that we are planning for next month's festivity... initially did the cooking indoors and got that down pat then moved outdoors to the grill and attacked it there. And that worked well, except for the fact that just one of these items would fill up most people. Crap... must figure out a way to White Castle this now and still be good... Ah-ha!!! Ramekins!!! Just about the right size... do our assembly in the ramekins... onto the grill... and perfect. Small enough... and yet still kicking ass. ^_^

Have also been prepping the kitchen with various appliances and whatnot for 2-1/2 days of food prep. One would swear that I became a name brand whore with all the KitchenAid appliances and utensils everywhere... they just make really good stuff.

Plans for this weekend are to work further on the menu and try out a few more dishes.
My journal (an actual physical journal) went from holding random crap from long ago to holding menu ideas... recipes... ingredient lists... food layouts...

Am I planning a gathering of friends and food or a freakin' buffet?

Going through costs of stuff... five different proteins alone are going to cost me a bit over $600. This is supposed to be enough to handle about 30-36 people... hoping. Not included in there are ingredients I'll be picking up at my local grocer (provided the assholes don't go on strike between now and the gathering).
So let's see... expected total cost of this event for just food and drink? I'll put it in the $1100 range. $225 for a keg of Guinness... $620 for the exotic meats... veggies, pastas (I think we're making our own pasta?), fruits, et cetera.
Will be meeting up with the other cook/chef this weekend to try and finalize all of this and make sure we know what we are doing before things start to come under the wire. Though I'm unsure about the dessert since this is allegedly a surprise for me. Something is going to be pulled off somehow without me knowing exactly what is happening? Oh this ought to be VERY interesting...

and now back to digging for some recipes... cold soups... bell pepper coulis... blood orange hollandaise... purple potato salad (possibly with octopus)... and whatever for the exotic meats...
Note that there no mention of what the meats are as these are to be revealed to the guests the day of (some of which are member of GFF) for the WTF factor and hopefully the OMG factor too... hoping to shock and please in the same dishes.
Will try to photo-document the various steps that we are going through... would be interesting to see that afterwards personally for the madness and progression. Guess it's time to fire up the camera about now for the pre-madness... scribbles in notebook and journals... et cetera.

And somewhere in this month I have to track down my selection of AMV's and machinima that I want to show this year. I think I have a few selected already, but am hoping to break away from the WoW and anime stuff and see what else is out there that is really well done.

not as though anyone cares though...

for the SoCal folks... and NorCal folks too if you want...
Technically anyone who is interested and willing to fly/drive/whatever to Anaheim, CA at the end of July this year.

Basically I'm preparing to send out my invites for the 3rd annual OMGWTFBBQ... folks who attended last year (Shorty, Kaleb.G, Furby, ChaoticLullaby, etc) know exactly what this event entails.
So if you are interested in receiving an invitation (nothing special, just an evite) drop me a PM with your email address.

I will probably be going over everything and send out the invites this coming weekend which allows for people to plan accordingly a couple of months in advance since this event is the same weekend at the San Diego Comic Con (sorry, I trump Comic Con... these events are always the last weekend of July to coincide with my birthday and I've been alive longer than Comic Con) for those who are planning on attending that event down south.

Donations for food and/or Guinness keg

a day at Disneyland Resort and some hockey crap...
spent yesterday at the Disneyland resort with the wife's family celebrating her cousin's 21st birthday... started out rather early with breakfast at the river Belle Terrace since lunch reservations were for 3pm at The Blue Bayou.

Me? Wearing a Germany soccer jersey... on top of that? A Germany hockey jersey. Let's just say that I definitely was getting the odd looks all day long, whether I had the hockey jersey on or the soccer jersey. O_o
Bastards... don't realize that if I'm wearing a jersey for a German team does not mean I'm a skinhead or pro-Nazi. Sadly most people see a German jersey and they think you are pro-Nazi or some bullshit like that. I really hate people that are so fuckin' narrow minded like that.

Oh well... on to other things.
Lunch was decent... I guess. Twelve of us... bill was about $335 after our cast member discount. My entree was definitely not worth the $28 charge. I ordered the mahi mahi... and the damn this was a block of fish that was about 2.5" x 2.5"... I've ordered the mahi mahi at other DLR restaurants before and it was never that small. Disgusted by the lack of fish...

After lunch some of the folks headed back to their hotel room... and some of us headed over to DCA for drinks since we definitely needed them.

Ended the day about a couple of hours after drinking in DCA... headed home to realize I was sunburnt pretty bad. Face, neck, and forearms are red... even the tops of my hands are bright red. Oops... forgot the sunscreen. Guess I've spent too much time in an office... >_<

and now watching Game 2 of the Ducks vs Red Wings series... not a great game for the first game... and not even that great of a second game but at least it's in OT right now. Hoping Anaheim wins this one... coming back to win four more after two losses will be a pain in the ass...

the aftermath… from my perspective…
So here I am a couple of days after getting my mouth torn apart by a dentist… drinking Ensure… and having one hell of a time trying to speak…

So here is what I have learned thus far:
1) Ensure is nasty… I really hate the stuff a lot. If you tell me something is supposed to be chocolaty… don’t lie to me and make it actually taste like mud. Less than thrilled by it. BTW: what in the hell do I need copper in my diet for? Am I crapping out pennies for a living now?

2) water is nice… but tea is much better since it has a fuckin’ taste to it. I have lived on pretty much nothing but water for a beverage since 8am on Saturday… this afternoon I changed up to tea to get some flavor going in my mouth that isn’t Ensure.

3) I really want a smoke and a drink… waiting for the all clear from the dentist in the morning about these two. Obviously not over-doing it… but at least be able to every so often without fucking shit up…

4) upper plate somewhat easy to remove. Lower plate hurts like a bitch to remove and put back in… why? Because it is taking up a lot more swelling than the upper one did. So the damn things are tighter than all hell and feel like I’m trying to cut into my fuckin’ gums when putting them in.

5) I look like a freak when I don’t have either plates in my mouth. And it’s not a pretty site either. CacheCrash got a few photos of my mouth without the plates in them… and I’m pretty damn sure they will be ugly as all hell when I pull them off of the camera at some point.
Though I look a lot better with them in… just still getting used to them being in. And waiting to not be in constant pain so I can being the process of learning to eat again. Just eating a small bit of bread today hurt and was a chore… O_o

6) speaking of eating… that is just one of many things for me to re-learn. Learn to speak again… eat again… drink again… et cetera. Anything that requires the use of my mouth, it’s gonna be learned again. *sigh*

7) wearing a hockey jersey… and having a bloody mouth is a sure sign that people will assume only one thing. Waiting for my meds on Saturday afternoon… bloody mouth… towel… couple thinks the worst. I assure them in my rather muffled speech that it was from a dental procedure and nothing more than that. Guess hockey seems to have it’s violent side ^_~

well that is all for now. Ended up going to Disneyland Resort today for a few hours… went on a few attractions before leaving before 2pm. Went on what I wanted to go on… and had only one Vicodin the entire time I was there. Apparently a lot of activity causes more pain in my mouth… think it’s the increased bloodflow or something… but managed to get home and deal with shit here a bit better than I would have in the middle of a Disney park. Here I can curse and scream… where there I’d be looked at oddly while being escorted off property for doing the same thing ^_!

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Workplace…
There is a 4-way stop at the intersection of Orangewood Avenue and Palmwood Drive in Garden Grove. Drivers who are on Orangewood tend to roll the stop sign or just ignore it. Every once in a while you will see a member of the Garden Grove police staked up up a bit near the northern part of Palmwood in order to catch those who choose not to fully stop. On rare occasion will one find a member of the GGPD sitting on the south end… and even more rarely will they be sitting there at 6:10am

Sure enough… there was the silhouette as all of the lights were off… not even seeing any internal lighting that might have been cast into the vehicle. Just sitting there. I complete my stop as I always do. Car coming up behind me does not look like the patient type.
I proceed across the intersection to my ultimate destination… I’m watching the vehicle behind me to see if they’re going to roll the stop. And sure enough… here they comes… hot to trot. But wait… seems they forgot something. A complete stop at the intersection. Police vehicle roared to life… lights flashing… and they’re busted.

So whatever this person was in a rush for… they are going to be even later and more impatient now to reach their ultimate destination. And a word of warning to folks… don’t fuck around with these rolling stops… seriously. You’ll get a ticket and then you’ll be cranky. Full stop = feeling that slight whip as the car has come to a complete stop. Cops are looking for that slight movement and if they can’t see that then they are looking at your wheels. It doesn’t take a genius to realize when someone is rolling a stop.

But that is my funny for the day… have fun today…
Tomorrow is the one day I am supposed to drink a lot… Guinness and corned beef are the menu all day tomorrow… 2pm -10pm… my place. Bring other food and an appetite if you are so inclined. Don’t know if the Guinness Stew will be making an appearance as I have not heard from downstairs neighbor about that since last weekend.

I win…
Yeah… not really, but I thought it was definitely an interesting end to a long day for me yesterday.

Work: have been playing IT Guy for the past couple of days as I realize that a couple of the computers in the office have not had any of the Windows updates in who knows how long. The one system I worked on didn’t even have SP2 installed… so that was downloaded and installed overnight. Then there were over seventy updates since the release of SP2 that had to be downloaded and installed.
Another computer to get tackled in the coming days as it seems to be locked down tighter than a chastity belt on prom night. Thankfully I have admin access to the damn thing to update everything. Guy can’t even adjust his clock… that is sad.

Then of course there is everything else. Gal who handles the Frito-Lay account is out of the office this week on vacation. So I am to assist with the morning paperwork… and bills of lading if needed. Needless to say I’ve been doing both no matter what. Thankfully my accounts have been silent this week.
I’m also getting dragged into an interesting situation. Seems there are vermin feces being found within the boxes of chips. Not a lot… one here… one there… but enough to have people worried. So I spent part of today going through about a dozen cases of chips looking for any signs of infestation. Found nothing… no feces… no chew marks… but the thing that struck me was that when we would open a box one would be hit with a strong ammonia-like smell which led me to believe that there was an infestation. But after going through the boxes… bag by bag… and smelling each bag I found nothing. The conclusion seems that this isn’t an infestation within the warehouse but this stuff could be coming in with the pallets and falling into the boxes below when the pallets are double-stacked. I made my suggestion of how to see if this was still happening, but it seems that it’s “too much work”… placing a plywood board on the top of the bottom pallet to prevent anything from dropping from above. Too much work… meh…

But in the end, I’m pretty much bumping my name up the shit list of the current QC manager because he is aware that I’m questioning his lack of being an actual QC manager rather than a snitching spy for the boss. No loss for me… he’ll be seeing what I can do if I get the right motivation and time to deal with everything. Hmmm… Fluidmaster rubbed off on me in a good way I guess ^_~

But this is about yesterday afternoon when I came home. I drove by the driveway that I typically pull out of and notice a car parked in my carport. Hmmm… odd. It’s not the apartment manager’s car… and Milady didn’t tell me that she was having guests over. I park in back… and walk over to the vehicle. Tinted windows… so I go to look in the passenger-side window to be greeted to an ass wearing a thong and not much else. The wearer of said thong/butt-floss was chowing down on the man-meat of the person in the driver seat.
Surprised, I step back… and as I’m walking away I knock loudly on the read window. Car starts up within a couple of seconds… and pulls out of my carport. He avoids driving right by me and pulls out of another driveway as far from me as possible.
Always nice to know that Million Dollar Alley is still alive and well night and day. Just don’t take up my carport… or fuckin’ get a hotel room. There are plenty of hotels in the area and judging from the car, the guy was in town for a convention anyway. But I really need to learn… get the camera. Snap a photo of the car and license plate… then go to the front of the vehicle and snap a photo inside… fuckin’ hindsight… next time though I will be remember.

the most boring round of The Truth Hurts...
well this round is off to a rather boring start... 2 sets of questions asked of two of the five folks this round? Maybe we're too boring or unknown... or maybe it's dying a quick death? Who knows... but not expecting to see anything worthwhile coming across in this round...

2-1/2 weeks to go...
that's the amount of time before I undergo orthodontic surgery for full extraction. Not exciting... very nervous. But hey... I fucked up and let my mouth go to shit and this is the result of it.

But in the meantime, the plans are to spend St. Patrick's Day with friends and some family at my place... a lot of drinking of Guinness... a lot of corned beef and cabbage... and just having fun.
New keg is being delivered on Saturday morning... with a new coupler since the current one has it's pressure release valve stuck open and is being held closed by a bandaid. Meh... $60 for a new piece of equipment. Not horrible... but not great either.

And then after that it's just getting ready for the OMGWTFBBQ at the end of July. Wife is getting together the list of people who will be roasting me that evening/night. I'm going through and picking out recipes for various meats I'm ordering up... and looking at possibly doing up some other items that are not related to the exotic meats that I bring in each year.

And that is it... I am leading a very boring life right now. Work... home... try to relax before going to bed... sleep... repeat. Have been trying to get back into WoW but without as much success as I'd like to have had with it. I'm in Nagrand at least working my way through that huge pile of quests. I still have a lot of them I need to complete in Azeroth... WPL and EPL mainly... as well as a couple of instances in Outlands that I need to run eventually when I actually have a few hours to blow.

We don't need another goon...
we don't need to know he'll take their head off... we just need a scorer to make our way through... the Stanley Cup...

Yeah... not overly thrilled about today's trade deadline. I can understand Burke not jumping at some of these players because of the pricetag for a rental... but you trade up a decent back-up goaltender for another headhunter? Granted, they traded out one goon this past weekend in O'Brian but between Thorton and Perros, how many more fighters do we need in Anaheim.
I get the fact that Burke is trying to shake the stigma of the Ducks being a pussy-fied team... but being the team that has more fighting majors than any other team in the league... and I think someone mentioned the far gap between Anaheim and the team below them in fighting majors in a recent telecast during a game.

Well, it should be interesting for this weekends games that I'll be attending to see how and where everyone falls into place. Can Anaheim pick up the steam and start to win games again like the past couple of games? Hopefully...

so easy even Skills could do it...
so last night I thought I'd dig into a couple of my new cookbooks that I had received earlier in the week to do up a little something for the wife for dinner. Nothing extravagant, but nothing overly simple either.

The choice? Salt-encrusted pork loin with asparagus. Technically the dish is a mix of two different dishes that were presented in the book... I just was going for somewhat quick and simple.

Ingredients needed:
1lb pork tenderloin
4-6 egg whites
2 cups rock salt
Sage
Rosemary
Thyme

Preparation:
Heat the oven to 425F. And let's get crackin'...
Separate the yolks and whites from 4-6 eggs (if using a larger piece of meat use the higher number of eggs... I did a 3lb loin and needed more like 6-8 egg whites). Toss the egg yolks or use for something else if you wish.
Beat the egg whites until firm peaks are formed (5 - 10 minutes depending on mixer speed). Fold in the rock salt.
On a sheet pan, lay out parchment paper and spread half of the egg white mixture on the paper. Place half of the various sprigs on that layer. Place the tenderloin on top of the sprigs. Place the remaining sprigs on top of the tenderloin and cover with the remaining egg white mixture. Try to make sure you have the entire tenderloin covered in the egg white mixture.

Insert into oven and cook it until the internal temperature hits 140F (a probe that tracks the temp will help you out quite a bit as opposed to constantly having to poke and prod the meat during the cooking process).
When completed, remove from the oven and remove the salt crust from the tenderloin. Brush off any vegetation that might still be stuck to the meat. Slice meat and serve.

Preparation of the asparagus:
1 bunch of asparagus
1 shallot
2 TBSP butter

Prep the asparagus as you normally would... cutting about 1/4 to 1/2 of the spear off and tossing. Dice the shallot and set aside.
In a large pan over medium-high heat, melt the butter and introduce the shallots to the party. Allow the shallots to mingle for a minute or so and then place the asparagus spears into the pan for about 4 - 5 minutes, turning occasionally. And serve.

End result: juicy pork loin with yummy veggies.

Tonight will be an interesting mix of spices coating the pork loin while getting treated to the stovetop instead of the oven.
