It has happened
Earlier this week we received official confirmation from the FSMA (Belgian version of the SEC) that we have been granted a license for fund management! This was the biggest hurdle for us because everything depends on this, you can have all the investors in the world but if the authorities say no, you can do exactly nothing if you want to stay independent. It took more than ten meetings and as many presentations and our legal counsel must have written books to get it, but we are incredibly relieved that this worked out so smooth! Investors are also coming around, and we managed to convince a representative from a relatively wealthy family of our idea so this will hopefully open some doors.

For the rest, I spent the past week studying for FRM (financial risk management) which was a bitch but taught me a lot, so our strategy is also taking form, so next month we can start with our simulation runs to finetune it, which will make it easier to sell to other investors, hopefully bringing us close enough to critical mass to start in February or March!

Blast from the past
Whoa, it's been ages since I actively visited this place. I saw something on Sass' facebook about Zeph dying and a surge of old members coming back to visit which of course spiked my curiosity.

I kinda lost track of the community at about the same time it started to decline, or when it grew tighter as the only active members seemed to be the ones organizing the meet, depends on how you look at it I guess. Real life also caught up to me, I have been rather busy lately. I quit my consultancy job about a month and a half ago, and together with some friends and some ex-colleagues we decided to start our own asset management company. We are currently looking for investors, as we are halfway reaching critical mass when it comes to funding to get the ball rolling. A lawyer buddy is working on getting us a fund management license which will hopefully be a done deal by the end of the year, and if we continue to raise funds at our current pace we'll be able to go ahead sometime in February. Most of my time nowadays is spent pitching our proposals to wealth managers, as we are initially focusing on institutional investors, aside from 2 or 3 wealthier families.

Personal life, not much going on, girlfriend's set on graduating 2013 so after that we can take some serious steps forward, we enjoy the ride for now .

New car #2
Response to: New car #1 by Peter

So, got my permanent car a couple of weeks ago, but couldn't be bothered to take pics in shitty weather. It took some time getting used to, but it drives a lot smoother than the rental I had before this one. Also a lot faster, which unfortunately means that I already got a few speeding tickets .

Life update
Damn this place has grown quiet. I used to come here every day to catch up on everything, but now once a week's often more then enough.

Anyway, nothing special has been going on as of late.

Work's busy, I had a project at Europe's largest settlement bank that was absolutely brutal, 70+ hour weeks were common up until the middle of January, but I really did learn a lot about it (like how much coffee I can tolerate before complete shutdown). I have a new project now at the world's largest bank (not allowed to disclose client names, but shouldn't be too difficult to figure out, look at balance totals). A certain type of activities that used to be done in London and Paris are being centralized in Brussels, and we have been brought in the transit period, after they fired a certain big consultancy firm that was absolutely useless. It's a lot of work, but pretty nice, as I spend half my time in London or Paris on the company's money .

I've also started studying for a CFA, specialist analyst certification, but I haven't really been able to keep up with it. I do recognize certain aspects of my job though, so that should speed up at least some parts I hope.

Moving in with the girlfriend took some adjusting, but I think that we sorted everything out. All in all, it went more smoothly than I thought, but there were still some rough times.

How has everyone been these last weeks/months?

I do not get this look

It seems to be unique to Belgium, and typical of snobbish law/economics fils-a-papa students. I get that you sometimes prefer wearing a T-shirt under a dress shirt because its cold or you sweat like an ox, but why the hell would anyone think that this looks casual? With little exception, this look only seems to work only with white t-shirts, whatever the rest of an outfit (yes, even with black dress shirt-black costume). Sure, you can't walk around everywhere with your shirt half unbuttoned, but this simply does not work. You also see it everwhere, from the workfloor to the sleaziest bars these guys go to, and the drunker they get, the more they look like a bunch of dorks.

New car #1
So, been a bit busy lately as I started my job as a consultant (specializing in banks and other financial institutions). Job's great, just started a project on process planning for one of Europe's largest banks, so that's a nice challenge right there. Hours can be pretty brutal though, but Ilse and I are both workaholics so we manage quite ok, at least up until now. There are definitely some perks to the job though, one of them being a company car with a gas pass for Europe (hello cheap vacations :P). For now we got a temporary car, a Peugeot 308. Quite happy with that, although I'm not a big fan of French cars. We get a Golf in a couple of weeks though (official company car), and I'll be sad to see this one go, especially because I already have more than 7000 km with it in a month and a half.

Free bumper case my ass
So I just ordered an iPhone 4 (Blackberry keeps breaking down so I thought I'd try something else). The thing came out yesterday in Belgium, but I did not have the time/was too lazy/thought it wouldn't be such a big deal, meaning that they are sold out everywhere. No big deal, I can wait. I asked if the free bumper cases that are being handed out in the US would also be included here, but the girl in the store said that she had never heard about it. She asked a manager and he claimed that Apple had already come up with a solution, eliminating the need for handing out free stuff, but if I would want one I could always buy the (Apple-approved!) case they offered for 24,99 euros, which was incidentally also sold out.

Got a job!
Yesterday, I signed a contract with a financial consulting firm. The pay is decent, not great, but they do offer a company car with all benefits, which is awesome. First day is August 30, when I start a four week training which is more than welcome as I know shit about finance .

cufflinks
So, to celebrate our anniversary Ilse got me a nice pair of cufflinks that I spotted some time ago (these if anyone's interested). Some say it may be a bit old-fashioned, but I think that the right pair really helps to accentuate someone's appearance, plus the shirts with the double cuffs are just awesome and somehow fall so much better then just your everyday shirt. I had to buy a new suit a couple of weeks ago, as some fucking jackass stole my other one in Budapest (can't trust those bloody Hungarians apparently), and I am really glad that I can finish my look now.

In other news, only three weeks left until graduation!

Recommend me some blogs please
I'm feeling pretty bored with the internet at the moment, but am simply too lazy to look for new things, so I come to you guys! I'm mostly looking for some cool blogs to follow (photography, travel stories, fashion, food & drinks weird stuff, anything basically), so if anyone knows something neat, let me know!
