What happen
My webhost suspended my account permanently a few days ago due to using too many server resources and copyright infringement. Of course, this is not surprising, and was just a matter of time before this happened anyway. It is quite surprising I was able to get away with it for two years though. You may be wondering exactly what it is that broke the server's back. It wasn't due to any of my users, or due to any external site using my links. Nope, it was Movie Night. That thread was insanely popular in terms of download and such.

I'm not sure if / what I'll do as a substitute. I do have another webhost (currently used to host Yama's forum), so I might use that to host a few links. I've also toyed with the idea of buying a megaupload account or something for all my pirating needs. I do know I can't host something like Movie Night with virtual hosting, though. To adequately host that without getting yelled at, I'd need a dedicated server. And those cost quite teh monies.

Anywho, if y'all have any ideas / recommendations for future hosting places, let me know.

If you use files I host on other websites, you may want to read this.
I've had to turn on hotlink protection due to several sites abusing my poor server. What this means is that if one were to try and access my links on sites I don't approve of, they get redirected to Google. I've set it up so that all my links on GFF and a few other sites I know my users use still work. However, there's a chance I missed a few sites. So if you use my links on another site and they've stopped working, let me know and I'll disable hotlink protection for that domain. However, if it's one of those domains that forced me to enable hotlink protection for, well, tough luck.

Let me know if this is a terrible idea and you know a better way to accomplish the same goal. I'm not a fan of hotlink protection because I like my files being available to a multitude of people. However, it was either that or get shutdown entirely.

On Sennheisers and eardrums
I recently purchased a pair of Sennheisers HD 650s, upgrading on my pair of HD600s. Some reviewers tended to think the HD650s were "better" than the HD 600, while some thought the HD600s did a better job at recreating the song more exactly. I had some extra money around (though not enough for a pair of electrostatic headphones... Someday...), so I decided to give them a whirl.

After listening to the HD650s for several days now, here's my comparison of the two.

First off, it's true what they say about the HD600s. They are focused on delivering the aural fury as exactly as they possibly can. After listening to 600s, that's the most prominent different between them and the 650s. The 650s seem to make everything sound more normalized in a way, though that's not quite the word for it. Balanced, I guess, is a somewhat better word.

Though there are some serious upgrades present on the 650s. For one, the bass they offer is noticeably better than the 600s, and with a proper amplifier these babies can punch your eardrums out. They come with a better stock cable than the 600s, and it shows with the clarity that's produced. Another thing is that the 600s, due to being so anal about reproduction, tended to make metal sound "messy." With the 650s and a proper rip, all aspects of metallic fury come through even in the complex parts, with nothing drowned out as a result of crappy engineering / mixing. That's what impressed me the most: these cans can actually compensate for shitty engineering.

However. there are some downsides. For one, these 650s needed several hours or aural fury before they sounded their best. Unlike the 600s which sound awesome the moment they're plugged in, these need to be broken in. They also make the headphone amp an absolute requirement, and while the 600s did benefit from an amp, it wasn't as necessary. The amount of bass they offer also turns out to be a downside when listening to Trance, as the beat can overwhelm some parts of the song. However, if you're going to listen to Benny Benassi or Dark Ambient pieces, these are the cans you want to listen with.

Of course, these are aspects of the perfection of the 600s that could not be improved upon, just reproduced. Once you fit the headphones to your head, you can forget you're wearing them. They never feel hot, and any background noise is vanquished. There is a phone literally 4 feet from me when I listen to these things, and I can't hear it ring with them running. And the things it can do with it's tiny speakers, it just blows the mind.

If I were to recommend a pair of headphones, I'd pick the HD650s. However, in the next breath, I recommend you hear a pair of 600s first.

Random musings brought about by the fact that I can't sleep.
1. If one wanted to drastically reduce music piracy, steeping up crackdowns and lawsuits would be incredibly inefficient. A far better way would be to improve headphone technology, or find a way to produce audiophile quality headphones cheaper. Give everyone a pair of headphones like the Sennheiser HD600, and they'll still download music over the Internet. However, if they like the music, they'll be forced to buy the CD on account of anything that's not lossless sounds like it's missing something on a real good pair of headphones. I am finding out this the hard way after being introduced to FLAC and realizing that I'm going to have to buy $200 worth of music eventually.

2. I finally got around to watching David Lynch's Dune, and it was a serious letdown. The movie starts out EPIC AS HELL but then they decide to rush through the last half of the movie. I mean, I realize they're under time constraints and all. However, had I not read the book, I'd have no freaking clue what was going on.

3. Dragon Quest VIII is an incredibly addictive game that I'm surprised took me so long to play. For one, it has an item creation system using items that aren't impossible to find like a certain game which will remain nameless in spirit. And that whole Mini-Medal subquest is kinda fun too.

4. The PS3 has redeemed itself as a gaming console with the release of Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. This shall be further confirmed with the release of Disgaea 3 in a year.

Dear Moon,

We have received some complains about copyright issues at your site at:

http://67.55.54.146/albums/

Please fix this issue, since we will be forced to suspend your account by next complaints.
...

Spoiler:

I think I know which site reported me, and all the other folders should still work. And although it is miraculous it took them this long to find me out, it's still a major freaking bummer.

Last time I use indexing in album folders. EVER.

Currently Playing: Halo 3 (like the rest of the Internet)

Links should work again (what happen)
After some pouring of access logs, I found out what happened. Sometime on the 16th, 274 unique users were downloading contents from my albums folder. At the same time. This resulted in the use of 1.1 TERABYTES of bandwidth within a period of about 5 hours.

Needless to say, my webhost suspended the account until I could get this shit under control. It turns out nearly all the connections were by direct request from my albums folder, which means someone shared the link with a high visitor site and the visitors proceeded to rape my server with orgasmic fury.

The solution: turn off indexing in my albums folder. All the links should still work; you just need to know the link to it. Kinda defeats the purpose of hosting them in one place if no one knows exactly what's there, but if y'all have a better suggestion, I'm open to it.

If you're wondering why my links aren't working:
Someone spawned off several hundred simultaneous http connections on my server, so my webhost suspended my account. Fortunately, it seems that they did not report me to the Man for what I host, so with any luck my links'll work again within 48 hours.

QUESTIONS
1. What kinds of speeds are people getting from my links? Recently, they have seemed to be relatively slow (around 250 kb/s) and I just want to see if that's a function of the server or just me being Comcastic.

2. With a whole lot of links from the MEC reuploaded and signs of more albums becoming available, I figure now's the best time to ask again for mod powers over the My Stuff forum. All I plan to do with said powers is fix the links in the Music Exposure Club thread so that they work, and I promise not to go mad with power.

Responses are appreciated.

Please use this entry to post your thoughts about seeing / vomiting up your intestines while gazing at this "thing."

Should you be wondering why any of my links aren't working...
My webhost had to switch me over to a new server because I filled up the old one and it couldn't support additional hard drives. Hence, if you're using any of my MEC links that begin with 67.55.42.110 or 67.55.42.21, replace it with 67.55.54.146. Like so.

That is all.
