Oh nvidia, how much trouble you give me |

|
So a while back while playing Crysis I kept getting BSOD'd during a certain mission. It got to the point where it was impossible to get through the game and I had to play the game.. elsewhere.
After a while, loading youtube videos and clicking play could randomly BSOD my computer.
Months went on and eventually I got another game that BSOD'd like crazy on me. On the error screen I could see mention of a .dll file and after some googling the truth was that nvidia's newer drivers can cause a loop that leads into BSOD, on certain component combinations. Apparently mine was one of those.
After lots of fiddling about, I eventually managed to remove the current drivers altogether, and install a version that proved to be stable. Youtube no longer crashed my computer and games worked fine.
And now I installed Deus Ex: HR. Starting the game going through the menus, everything working fine. Start the game, watch the opening video, then when it was time for the game to draw some in-game graphics, it tells me my computer MAY not have the resources to do something something and that I should check I have the latest drivers.
Well, I figured, now the old nvidia driver causes the trouble. I'd played through modern games without any errors, but I guess this one uses something that needs a newer driver. Or something.
Installing the latest driver, rebooting, my desktop brightness and gamma are completely incorrect and when I try to open the nvidia control panel... it crashes.
Every time. I reboot. I go to color corrections or anything, I get an error message that control panel had to close.
And starting the game STILL gives me the same error message that I should check my drivers.
I eventually learned that the error the game was given me was likely not for my drivers, but that the anti-aliasing option it had set by default was apparently something my graphics card does not support, as picking a lower setting started the game just fine.
Since the game it working now, I am not going to touch anything for now. I'll just play through the game (with darker in-game brightness), enjoy it and then later do the driver dance to get it back to the old version that worked fine before. if I could just remember what driver revision it was.
