So the GF brought over her latest grad textbook.
She's reading what appears to be yet another stupidly dense book on early or medieval Japanese history for one of her classes. She's done for the summer, but wanted to get some ideas for her thesis from her older books.

Oh okay, looks dense enough. The design is kind of neat, so what about the back?

Black Friday money wasting wrap-up (tell me what pointless stuff you bought too)
With this last purchase right, I own just about every relatively new game that I've been interested in. Final tally:

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - $25 (MSRP $60, still)
Assassin's Creed: Revelations - $8 (MSRP... $20, I think)
12-month XBox Live Gold card - $35 (MSRP $60)
Resident Evil 6 - $25 (MSRP $60)
X-COM: Enemy Unknown - $25 (MSRP $60)
Diablo III - $30 (MSRP $60)
Gears of War 3 - $10 (MSRP $60, according to Microsoft. Dubious)

Which means I spent... $138. With tax, roughly $150. MSRP total is... $380, or roughly $415 with tax. So I saved about $265 bucks after tax. Of course, one would argue that I did not truly save that much since I would never had bought this all at MSRP in the first place, but eh.

About the only niggling thing left for me is that I kind of want the Last Remnant on Steam (currently $9 during the autumn sale). I found out a few weeks ago that I've somehow misplaced my GfWL version, and I'd like to think Skills goes around the world and steals GfWL discs and purges them in a holy flame. So yeah, it's tempting to own it again and on a decent platform.

Did anybody score some good stuff the past couple days?

Oh hey okay bye money
Not even three hours into Thanksgiving, and tons of vidya sales of note that I've been looking at. I got my early holiday pay, and it's quickly evaporating.

paying rent is for pussies

So far, I've picked up

Assassin's Creed: Revelations - $8
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - $25
Resident Evil 6 - $25
12 month Xbox Live Gold card - $35

Considering

Assassin's Creed III - $25
X-COM: Enemy Unknown - $35
Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy - $15
Wireless XBox 360 controller - $29

Oh GOD all of my money

Assassin's Creed III for $25 is a fantastic deal (it's at the Microsoft Store if you're interested), but I've never been in any rush to play a game in the series before. I'll fiddle around with Revelations and maybe scout out AC III for cheap next year.

The other things are what I would like to have, but am holding back on because I've already spent so much (after having just bought a Wii U on Sunday).

Who wants a Music Beta (by Google) invite?
I only had two originally, but now I have... more. Willing to invite a few people, if they want in.

About Music Beta by Google

If you have an Android spacephone, the Music app works seamlessly with it, and the new version that was leaked from Android 4.0 is fantastic.

But yeah, unlike Google+, I have a very finite amount. Let me know if you want one.

Okay, so it didn't work out for poor Google Wave, but Google+ seems promising by being like Facebook without being Facebook. As such, I will do what I can to fire off invites wherever.

Just let me know, yo.

Picking a new phone!
Okay, so, I'm tired of Verizon because it doesn't work in my house. Not only that, but CDMA is just a pain in the ass when it comes to switching phones, and using them internationally is a crapshoot (prepaid sim cards aren't an option). So, I'm switching to T-Mobile because their coverage is fine in my house and anywhere I go around here, and their (non-contract) monthly rates are significantly cheaper than Verizon's.

Anyway, my point. I'm searching for an unlocked phone, and I seem to have narrowed down the manufacturer to Nokia since their phones aren't nearly as expensive as HTC's or Samsung's. They aren't cheap by any stretch of the imagination since they're unsubsidized, but they're still a few hundred bucks less.

But yeah, I'm in a sort of dilemma. My choices are the X6 for $290, or the N900 for $450.

I am torn. I prefer the price of the X6, naturally, but the N900 won't be rendered obsolete as soon.

I could use the input/trolling of fellow gadget nerds, maybe even some idea for a third choice I should consider.

My buddy Becky went to England to see her relatives. I'm happy for her, of course, but why does everyone leave when I have nowhere to go currently! Hell, even next month, when I go to Taipei, she'll be gone again for an archaeological dig in Honduras.

I need a Kerokero Cola.

Los Angeles
I went to LA last weekend to see my buddy, who moved up there to attend UCLA. We agreed that four months had been much too long!

So I decided to take a train, since my van would eat up more in gas just getting up there than I would spend for round-trip tickets through Amtrak. Problem is, I sort of forgot about the people you find at train stations. Kettner station in downtown San Diego was nothing-- almost quaint in fact. Union Station in LA, on the other hand, produced quite a few gems.

Now, I expect the creepy ones to ask me for a light/cigarette/light & cigarette combo. In addition to these, I had a guy ask me for money (shock!) so that he could get a bus ticket out of town. Now, was he getting a bus ticket? Probably not. But he gave me the oddest story.

"See that corner over there? That's the jail. They let me out at 2 AM this morning. But I ain't a criminal or anything."

Wait, what? Are you new at this bilking thing or something? Why would you lead the conversation off of money and down that road? I had a single dollar bill on me, so I gave him it and flashed my barren wallet and had him leave me be. Maybe that's why he brought up prison. Or maybe he was telling the truth! ...Probably not, since I saw him there on my return ride home, telling people a different story.

Then I had a homeless lady sort of wander by. She ended up standing next to my bench, digging through some trash. Free country, I don't care. Then she starts mumbling. Eh, really, I think it'd be weirder if she was a hobo who didn't mumble. But then she spins around and screams

"I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU HAVE AT HOME!"

Thankfully, she was looking next to me and not right at me. I just sat that there, looked at my watch, then sent a text to my friend:

"Oh my god please help me"

She did eventually get to the station, and we went on our way.

I had a pretty good time. When you haven't seen someone dear for a long time, you're just as content doing nothing as you are... doing something. We went to the mall and the grocery store, but didn't really do anything meaningful besides exchanging Christmas gifts. We still had fun though.

Lastly, before I had to go back to Union Station, we stopped by a Thai restaurant that has a Thai Elvis impersonator as a big draw. He only performs on certain nights though, and that night wasn't one. We decided to take a photo, but I was on the other side of the gigantic table that stretched across the room. So we did the only sensible thing:

Two things I love about the bookstore.
Response to: See, there's two things I hate about the bookstore. by Final Fantasy Phoneteen

Flooded delivery bays. Why is this fun? Because we all got to see if pallets were seaworthy:

And they were quite! It looks shallow, but it was a good two feet; probably near three at the far wall. They later put a stick onto it with a crude drawing of a flag taped on, but I had already left at that point. Someone said they'd send me a picture.

Next, somewhat unnerving book covers. As I was shelving, I came across this hardcover I hadn't seen before. What's this cover all about?

Huh, a man pulling up his sleeve and animals running away in terror. ...Wait a minute, that look on his face--

Wow, it's Contact 2, mostly! (video game nerding out)
Akira Ueda, the director of Contact for the DS, made his own company about three years ago. He used to be a Grasshopper Manufacture employee, and Suda 51 mentioned ages ago that Ueda was working on Contact 2 with Audio, Inc, his new company.

I guess yesterday they finally showed off what work they have done, with the new game being called Space*Agency (ugh). I don't think it's very far along since they didn't even bother including any actual footage of the game in action, but seeing it and how much it looks like Contact warmed the shit out of the cockles of my heart.

YouTube Video

Lots of engrish, so beware. The synthy music isn't too bad. It's laidback, which is at least tolerable.

I loved Contact so much, so I'm really excited to see a pseudo-sequel/spiritual successor.

So Google opened it up to most applicants yesterday, and everyone gets 8 invites, so now's a good time for most people to jump in.

Various goings-on
So, yeah, couple things have happened lately. Let's see...

The girlfriend is doing well in Japan. I received a letter and a few gifts the other day, one of which was a badass LED watch (a birthday gift) and some sort of Japanese coin that brings in money to your wallet. work, damn you

She also had some pictures of her various travels. Her trip to a place called Hakone shrine produced some pretty interesting photos I thought to display here:

I spoke with her through video conference a little while back, and she's holding up fine. She flashed me my Christmas gift-- a copy of Berwick Saga, which is pretty damn awesome.

What else... Got a job at Borders in their inventory team, which is a pretty easy job. I hope Seris and Radez's job hunts fared just as well (they were looking for sliiiightly better jobs than bottom rung retail, though). Most of the employees are screwball, but I can work with that. Mostly.

I also got my laptop: a Samsung N140. I installed Windows 7 and 2 gigs of RAM on it, and she's running great. Oddly, though, the hard drive is partitioned into two by default, and I need to figure out how to merge them. Probably go to the troubleshooting forum one of these days.

Abort!
just finished watching my abortion porn

I'm a glutton for pain if I'm choosing to bring this up, I guess. Insults I can sit pretty well with, but being misunderstood is terrible for me.

One major thing that I feel is being misunderstood is my overall opinion on abortion. Like, pro-life or pro-choice.

I am pro-choice. If for nothing else, because I'm a guy and could not possibly understand the carrying of children. But also for this reason, I have small reservations. It's certainly not enough to override my belief that abortions should be legal (not even close), but I feel like it's enough to make it feel like it's more than a unimportant procedure. Because I can not possible know the feeling, I'm unsure if abortions should be taken lightly.

Anyway, because of that, it's my preference that women show the same amount of responsibility that men should. I support abortion, but I would feel more comfortable if it didn't have to be used at all, which is accomplished fairly easily with contraceptives. Of course, if they fail, abortion should always be an option. I wholly support that; they were being responsible but something went wrong.

But at the next point some people took my own experiences and thought I was applying them to the whole. There's a small group of women I knew in high school who never used contraception nor asked their boyfriends to take any responsibility, then skipped into a clinic a few weeks later knowing full well that abortions would always be there to fix their stupidity. I found this kind of behavior deplorable, and I felt there's probably more people like that out there. That's what I meant when I said I would pick out the ones that were "undeserving."

Now, I feel those people I just mentioned are less deserving of an abortion than a responsible couple who had something go wrong. Should they still get abortions? Yes, and I feel this was lost in the argument last night. The irresponsible ones bother me in some small way since those girls were completely detached from accountability for their actions, but I don't disagree that an abortion would be best (like a child would really grow up healthy in that kind of environment).

Refusing abortions for the "undeserving" was not something I was advocating for everyone. I was saying that I wish I could show those particular women who consistently choose to make poor choices regarding sex that it's... not very smart. I'm not saying an abortion isn't the best available option a lot of the time and I'm not saying that pregnancy should be used to punish stupid girls, especially since I'm a guy and can't possibly understand. But, it seems like everyone can and should respect (or I guess maybe fear?) the procreative process and be responsible.

I hope this helps. I don't pretend to know what's best for women, and I wouldn't refuse abortions for people.

Finally getting my refund. Anyone know of a quirky/unique netbook?
Okay, so, I'm getting my money back from Always Innovating for their absolutely nightmarish laptop that did not work at all.

I had originally planned to just get a Samsung netbook because I'm loyal to that particular brand, but also because Samsung does not make very many computers and would be relatively unique.

So I figured I should actually ask some people for any ideas for an interesting/unique netbook. My price range is about $400 (I'd be getting the Samsung netbook for about $320), and I just want something that works. Be it running linux, neon-green, whatever.

So, yeah. Any ideas?

The kicker is that, since I removed the screen protector that had 1000 bubbles in it/made it impossible to see the screen, I have to pay a $50 restocking fee to return it.

Well this is interesting (for foreign affairs, anyway)
Something I read in a CNN article struck me as kind of odd.

I haven't heard of Russia being referred to as a superpower since... well, since it was a state in the Soviet Union. I remember about 10 or 12 years ago there was a bit of a food shortage in the more rural areas of the country, and I knew it had bounced back to some degree since then, but... a superpower? Maybe it's just me, but I thought most people agreed it'd lost that status.

I wonder if those were CNN's words entirely, of if it was paraphrased by Obama/Medvedev.

Rest in peace, Ted. Etcetera, Etcetera.
I am deeply and honestly saddened by Ted Kennedy's passing tonight. As a democrat, I found him to be the most identifiable and likable member of the party in the Senate. The rest of the democratic leadership is a bunch of crotchety, oftentimes creepy old guys. Looking at you, Senator Byrd (even if I do like you). And you too, Senator Reid (whom I do not like one bit). I wonder if this will hurt their effectiveness.

If you've never had fresh figs, try 'em.
I couldn't sleep, so I decided to go pop a few of them. It's harvest time, and I can't get enough of the damn things. Fig Newtons don't really cut it for me since they use dried, processed fig (even though Newtons are fucking tasty).

Not to mention it just makes you feel so... Roman.

I'm hoping figs are a bit more common for everyone else here than they are for me. They are nowhere to be found in normal markets around my area, and I know it's mostly because they're not easy to distribute in large quantities. I get them from my great-aunt's fig tree in her backyard.

Chiang Kai-shek
scholarly gonk
I've noticed that he's really ignored in English media, probably the most out of the leaders of the major powers in World War II. More time is spent focusing on Mao in Yan'an during the war than anything relating to the rest of China, which is pretty silly. I mean, I can sort of understand that people are generally more interested in history's "winners," but it's really frustrating for me when I want to read more about it.

I bought the most recent English biography of Chiang (The Generalissimo), but I wouldn't mind more. If anyone has any other places I should be looking for information, I'd be grateful.

Without further ado, my trip to China.
No, I'm not returning at this time, as originally planned-- I'm leaving. Whole bunch of shit went down at the passport office and three weeks later I finally have it and my visa.

I'll only be staying a week, but I've sunk too much money into this to back away. Rather than taking a class, I'll be traveling around Shanghai for a day or two, taking a train to Xi'an and exploring things there for three days, then taking a train to Beijing and staying there for the remainder of the time. I'll still be getting a grade, so I can't complain too much.

Flight leaves LAX at 1:40 AM on Tuesday, so I'll be driving up tomorrow night. A bit anxious since I've never flown over six thousand miles of desolate, desolate ocean before, but whatever. The plane crashes, I'm dead regardless.

I just came to the realization that the Diss portion of Prop/Diss is useless.
Now, I'm not saying "oh, it's negative, we should all do what bobo bitched about and be happy feeling people with love in our hearts." Anger, disagreement and all that other stuff are all natural occurrences on forums.

Disses, however, offer people a chance to lazily disagree or bash people in a manner that is only a half-step above surreptitious. They offer no counterpoints or alternatives to the poster's statement or suggestion and do nothing to contribute to the conversation at large. It is the Idiot's Dissent.

Why does this not apply to the inverse, with Props? It does, but I'm choosing not to criticize it for mostly pragmatic reasons-- it can prevent some people from mindlessly responding with "I agree" or "Couldn't have said it better," and it also promotes more positive feelings in members.

That's all, I guess. It's just something I've noticed, though I'm sure most people have already realized it's a flawed system.

Leaving for China in three weeks.
I wanted to call this entry "Big Trouble in Little China," but I didn't want to falsely advertise.

Studying abroad this summer in Shanghai, specifically East China Normal University. Took a look at some pictures of the campus and it seems nice (the dorms for exchange and foreign students are westernized with normal, non-squat toilets, so I am plenty happy), with a big ol' statue of waving Mao at the entrance that I can mimic.

Had a six-hour orientation on culture shock, insurance and repatriation of remains, staying safe, no banging strangers, etcetera. The Confucius Institute is organizing this program, so some of the required reading material is state-sanctioned history books. I'm looking forward to reading them and seeing what the CCP chose to talk about.

Also got my dice in the mail.

I like 'em! I think, while I'm on the plane, I'm going to try to develop a system based off of D&D that doesn't require role-playing. Of course, that's player control, which means I'm going to make the game much more linear in the process, but... eh. I think I can do it and still have it be fun. It may well already exist, for all I know.

So, I bought... dice. Dungeons and Dragons dice.

I don't know why. I don't play D&D and don't intend to. Besides the obvious stigma of doing so, I just don't like to role-play.

I dunno, does someone else out there have a childlike fascination with dice and also enjoy the math behind D&D?

...No, I don't pretend to be a completely normal person.

Circuit City Liquidation Sale details (come, come, look at my wares!)
Just got back from what was a hellish day at my store. It's a goddamn circus, and I'll go ahead and tell you what's on sale so you don't have to walk in (customer service has been explicitly told to not discuss prices or quantities over the phone).

Now, I'm know I'm not the first person on the damn internet to give this information and that you can probably find it elsewhere, but eh.

What's on sale?
Everything but game consoles.

How much off?
It varies as you can guess, but everything is a minimum 10% off. 30% maximum, with sales going higher as the weeks go by.

Break it down.
Okay.

10% off
New release games
New release movies (DVD and Blu-ray)
New release CDs
Office supplies (calculators, network cards/routers, keyboards, etc)
Laptops
Desktops
Televisions (all sizes)
Whatever else that isn't listed below

20% off
All games (excluding new releases)
All movies (ditto; DVDs and Blu-ray)
All music (ditto)
Printers(...? Not totally certain on that)

30% off
Game accessories (this includes controllers, hard drives, etc.)
TV accessories (screen cleaners, HDMI cables, power centers, etc.)
Humorously, when scanning through the sheet, ovens and appliances were listed. I don't think Circuit City has carried appliances since the 80s, but hey, if you find one and you need one... they're 30% off.

That about does it.

Circuit City Liquidation and the Musings of Their Employee
I'm two parts bored and one part concerned, so I figured I may as well make a journal since it's what's all the cool people do.

The hubbub at work today was over the news that Circuit City is dangerously close to the liquidation of all its assets, and this left me wondering about my own state of affairs.

A brief history. I've been employed by Circuit City since June of last year. I had previous applied at Borders and Best Buy, eventually relying on a recommendation from my brother (a four-year employee at the time).

I work in the "Product Flow Team," which is a glorified term for the inventory/warehouse team who are now meant to spent most of their time on the store floor helping customers and cleaning up (rather than staying in the warehouse to monitor and organize the back). This came into being because of the layoff of the company's senior-most, in-store staff and the general reduction in total employment within the company.

Now, I like my job. It's not terribly absurd or degrading, nor is it very difficult. The pay is certainly nothing to be proud of, but I could technically make less. But I learned on the first day that the store I work at is in dismal shape. There is a fine layer of dust on virtually every product in the store, the floors are covered in countless scuffs that the shoddy cleaning crew never bothers with. The warehouse has bent and warped structures from repeated blows and collisions with the stockpicker, and the stockpicker... Jesus. The thing barely works, and it's scary as hell to elevate it above 20 feet (it starts to groan and it shakes, jerks and halts suddenly).

Customers often complain about the various problems in the storefront, but the majority tend to be pleased with the customer service. That surprised me a little bit, but I do notice most people here are on their best behavior with prospective buyers of various goods.

The people I work with vary from horrible to some of the most entertaining and enjoyable people I've ever met. There's John, the store director who's considered the gigantic asshole by most (I tend to get along with him fine), his uppity and anal-retentive operations manager, and their various cronies who kiss ass like nothing else. Not surprisingly, the people who get along with most everyone else are the grunt associates; the bottom rung of the store totem pole. Jeff, a Home Entertainment Specialist (ie, TV guy) is quite possible the only person to ever make John uncomfortable (he did this by suggesting John tattoo something on to Jeff's own ass). Ben, a sales associate, is an ex-Marine who at one point threatened to urinate on an extortionist customer.

"...Why peeing instead of, like, kicking his ass, Ben?"

"Because then when he was walking home in his white shirt, people would look at him and say... 'you got peed on!'"

There are the lazy people, the angry people, the hyper-motivated people, and me. The people who were fired and pretended they quit, the people who were fired and pleaded for their job back. The drama and gossip is some of the most ridiculous I've ever seen, so I try to keep to myself. Even then, I still get pulled into some of the rumors that go around.

I just try to do work... and shop. I do about half and half there, I swear. I get discounts on everything. This 46'' LCD HDTV I'm using as a monitor? 800 bucks, being 60% off through vendor accommodations. This brand new computer? 25% off, and that's even after the the 2-year accidental insurance plan I have for it. The brand new video card I put in? Half off. The HDMI for my 360? 60% off. The power center that strictly regulates electricity currents and safely shuts down any electronics when it detects a surge? 50% (anything with "MKII" in the name has to be fucking sweet, amirite). This Zune? 30%. Even my phone plan with Verizon-- 20% off my monthly bill and 25% off all accessories.

I don't think it's possible for a person to pat him or herself on the back harder than I am right now, I know. No worries, this bragging still comes at a pretty steep cost.

Of course, the idea of me being out of a job is a big concern. This job naturally helps to pay for university expenses, and the idea of being unemployed is as unappealing as it is impossible if I want to continue my education. Of course, I wasn't stupid. I saved money, and I have a few thousand put aside for a semester or two. But still... eh.

I think that sums up my opinion about all of this, I guess. Eh. That and go shop at Circuit City if you want me to keep my job or something. I try to be polite to customers, at least.

Currently Playing: Ladytron - Tomorrow (yes, all their music sounds the same, I know)
